Push Piers vs. Helical
The Challenge:
•Building settlement up to 8”
•Slab failure
•Unusual soil conditions
Soil Reports:
• Hydraulic piers on the perimeter
• Helical piers on the interior

Remediation Of A Post Tensioned Edge Heaved Structure
Post Tension Lowering
The Challenge:
• Expansive soils and water intrusion combined to raise the edge of the house on 2 sides.
• The lack of an edge turndown localized the heaving to the sides of the structure.
Manometer Survey Results
• Note the areas of high readings on the east and south sides.
• The total elevation difference is approximately 2 ¾”
• The areas are localized to with in 5-8 feet of the perimeter.
Exterior Damage

Interior Damage

Interior Damage
The Solution:
1. Install helical piers on the perimeter of the areas that are affected with out raising.
2. Excavate the soil under the raised area leaving an intentional void.
3. Lower the house to the desired elevation4. Secure the helical piers.5. Grout in selected areas.6. Optional cut off wall built around the
perimeter.
Service Plan
• Note the interior piers at the load bearing interior column footing.

Additional Capacity Retrofit
The Challenge:
• Water tank capacity not designed into the slab.
• Tank Capacity 140,000lbs• 12” Thick Slab• Undermined • Reinforcing found at the bottom of the
slab
The Solution:
• Seven [7] - 20kp piers installed through slab
• 7*20 = 140kp

Saving Time and Money
The Challenge:
• Differential settlement in slab
• Equipment pad settlement
• Masonry wall settlement
• Concrete Replacement– Architectural finish
– Delivery dock downtime
The Solution:
• Mud jack the slab
• Stitch the cracks
• Helical anchors– Equipment pads
– Masonry walls

Let’s Talk About Concrete
Negative Side Concrete Waterproofing
The 2 Types of Concrete
That which HAS cracked
AND
That which WILL crack
The Inherent Nature of Concrete
Water leaving concrete as it cures leaves behind capillaries
Capillaries are filled by water after the curing is complete resulting in internal stresses
The “Life Cycle” of Concrete

Extensive Repair
Expansion Stress
Water Penetration
Reasons For Waterproofing
• Leak Prevention
• Corrosion Resistance
• Aesthetics
How Does Krystol Work ?• Krystol works to further react the
unhydrated cement particles in concrete thereby improving the natural hydration process of concrete.
• Krystol simultaneously fills the remaining pores and capillaries with millions of hair-like crystals resulting in impermeable concrete.
• The Krystol reaction will penetrate throughout the concrete mass wherever moisture is present and does not shrink in the absence of moisture.

Slurry Application
Cracking & Self Sealing
Concrete block was struck with a hammer to intentionally crack block.
Cracking & Self Sealing
After 7 days leak is being healed
Cracking & Self Sealing
Leakage was stopped completely by the formation of crystals within two weeks.
Below Grade Pits at Ocean Construction
• KRYSTOL T1 and KRYSTOL T2 were used to waterproof this below grade pit against significant hydrostatic water pressure in 1975. The equipment room is located at the edge of the Fraser river, 17-feet below the water table.
“Almost 30 years ago we used the Krystol Waterproofing Treatment to stop substantial leaking in our concrete pits. They are still dusty dry today and we have been happy customers ever since.” Ron Boyes, Superintendent, Ocean Construction Ltd.

Mud-jacking
Mud-jacking
• A pattern of 1-58”holes is drilled through out the sunken slab
Mud-jacking
• Grout is pumped under the slab, once void is filled the grout pressurizes and raises the slab to the desired height
Mud-jacking
• The holes are then patched with cement
