Giving Matters

Kadlec and Washington State University Tri-Cities are teaming together to improve the future of health care in the entire region, and Kadlec Foundation is

playing an important role.

In January, Kadlec and WSU Tri-Cities announced the establishment of an $18 million endowment, the earnings of which will create and fund five faculty positions at the Richland campus. The Kadlec Distinguished Chairs will allow WSU Tri-Cities to recruit doctoral-prepared faculty with the expertise necessary to meet the region’s need for preparing nurse practitioners.

WSU Tri-Cities currently has a few graduate-level students pursuing their doctorates as nurse practitioners but has no faculty on campus. The expanded nurse practitioner program should provide enough support for 50 to 60 additional nurse practitioner students, with about 15 to 20 graduating each year.

Across the country, doctor shortages are already happening with more shortages on the horizon as need increases; Eastern Washington and the surrounding rural communities are no exception. Nurse practitioners—registered nurses who have completed additional training such as the WSU Tri-Cities program—can help fill that need. In Washington, a nurse practitioner can cover many of the basic health care needs of patients.

“We are excited to help WSU create a DNP program on the Tri-Cities campus. These endowed positions will help attract world-class instructors to our community and ensure a first-class program for years to come,” said Rand Wortman, CEO of Kadlec Regional Medical Center. “The nurse practitioners who graduate from the program will not only be a tremendous benefit to Kadlec, but to other health care organizations around the Northwest. We greatly value our relationship with WSU and look forward to a productive partnership.”

According to Patricia Butterfield, dean of WSU’s College of Nursing, the gift is a game changer.

“Once in a blue moon, a gift can transform the health of an entire community. Kadlec Regional Medical Center’s generous gift does just that,” she said. “The family and psychiatric nurse practitioners we educate will work collaboratively with physicians and other clinicians to strengthen health care throughout Central Washington. The Kadlec gift will also open doors for graduate students and strengthen doctoral education. It is a visionary gift.”

The Foundation’s RoleOne unique component of the new endowment

involves the Foundation. Unlike traditional gifts to a university, Kadlec did not give the money directly to WSU.

Foundation Plays Key Role in Kadlec’s Historic Gift to WSU Tri-Cities

2014 Annual Report Edition

Kadlec and Washington State University Tri-Cities came together to announce the $18 million endowment to build a nurse practitioner program. Among those at the announcement were, from left to right, Kadlec Regional Medical Center Community Board of Directors member Wayne Martin, CEO of Kadlec Regional Medical Center Rand Wortman, WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor H. Keith Moo-Young and WSU Regent Lura Powell.

Kadlec Foundation is dedicated to partnering with donors to improve the health of our region. Monies raised stay local to support our patients and their families, fund important education for health care workers, provide community programs and enhance the high level of care at Kadlec.

Our community has always been at the heart of Kadlec. As the hospital celebrated its 70th anniversary in 2014, it’s important to also recognize how the

philanthropic support of the community has been central to the hospital’s success and growth through those years.

There is a long history of investing in and commitment to care that benefits patients, families and the region. Our donors’ extraordinary generosity has helped save lives, change outcomes, transform care, keep patients closer to home, and enrich the community.

And 2014 was no exception.

Thanks to donor support, in 2014, Kadlec Foundation distributed $2,127,115.

You can see your gifts at work through these Foundation 2014 initiatives:

• Completing the $9-million expansion of Kadlec’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which is now five times larger and allows more of these tiny patients to get care close to home

• Funding 28 scholarships for local students pursuing careers in health care

• Facilitating new lighting for the Healing Garden

• Providing grants for medical equipment including new software and monitors for the laboratory and scales to help specific patients obtain important weight information

• Purchasing specialty recliners for open heart patients to use during their healing process and decrease the likelihood of developing pneumonia

• Funding the Mammogram Assistance Fund, for uninsured/underinsured women in our community

• Supporting a number of programs and services directly related to our pediatric patients:

• Toys for education and distraction

• Clothing

• Sleep swaddles for premature babies

• Car Seat Program, including a special car seat to loan to families with children who cannot use a traditional car seat

• New Courageous Kids Program

• Dispersing Good Samaritan funds in support of patients and families during time of their greatest need

• Purchasing copies of “What To Do When Your Child Gets Sick” books, which lower medical costs by reducing unnecessary doctor/emergency visits and support community health

• Supporting oncology nursing education

• Ongoing support for bereavement services throughout the hospital

Your gifts make a difference. Thank you for your outstanding commitment to Kadlec Foundation.

The of Your Giving

Kadlec Foundation has a long history of supporting Kadlec’s youngest patients and their families. With donor support, that tradition continued in 2014.

Power

Instead, Kadlec Foundation is maintaining the funds and will provide the interest earnings to WSU for the new program.

Because the endowment is maintained by Kadlec Foundation, donors have the option to contribute to the

Kadlec Medical Education Trust and jointly benefit Kadlec and WSU Tri-Cities.

It is such a unique approach that it has been generating interest from across the country, according to Kadlec Foundation Executive Director Glenn Welch.

When Lura Powell and her husband, Art King, moved to the Tri-Cities in 2000, it was on the three-to-five-year plan, like many Tri Cities recruits. Yet, when

she finished her work as director of the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in late 2002, they made the decision to make this community their home.

“We wanted to stay here because of the people who live here,” she said. “This is an absolutely wonderful, giving community.”

Among those who are giving and contributing to so many important efforts are Lura and Art themselves.

Locally, Lura has served on a variety of boards and committees, including the United Way of Benton-Franklin Counties and the Tri-City Development Council. She also served on the Kadlec Medical Center Board of Directors and is a member of the Washington State University Board of Regents.

Art is also well known in the community for his volunteer efforts. He served as the unpaid executive director of the Tri-Cities Food Bank and was named Kennewick Man of the Year. In 2009, he earned the prestigious Governor’s Volunteer Service Award.

Supporting the NICU expansionWith so many opportunities to give and support important

efforts within the community, Lura and Art chose to contribute to Kadlec Foundation’s campaign to expand the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

“For us, one contribution we wanted to make was to the new NICU,” said Lura. “We have young grandkids, and we’ve been so blessed that none of them have needed this type of facility. But we’ve heard so many stories about parents whose babies have been born early and how important the NICU is.”

They also have confidence in how Kadlec Foundation would use any contribution.

“We know that the Foundation has a long history of being very effective and efficient in the use of gifts for our community’s needs,” Lura said.

“We’ve been blessed and want to give back,” she said.

Importance of strong health care For Lura and Art, supporting initiatives that strengthen

the health care of our community are efforts to support the entire community.

“High-quality health care in a community is very important,” she said. “It is one of the keys to the economic success of that community. It is important to have a broad-based health care system to attract new businesses and to recruit good employees.”

The Kadlec-WSU Connection As a WSU Regent, Lura recently represented the university

at the announcement of Kadlec’s gift to WSU-Tri-Cities to enhance its nursing education.

“This gift will make an enormous difference in the ability of WSU to attract top level faculty to the program and build a strong, expanded nursing program in the Tri-Cities,” she said. “It will have a major impact on the health care in our community.

“The unique way that Kadlec and WSU have structured the gift as a public-private partnership between Kadlec Regional Medical Center, Kadlec Foundation, and WSU Tri-Cities may become a model across the country,” Lura said.

Twenty-five year old Melissa Street is pursuing a dream.

In September, Melissa began her studies at Columbia Basin College to become a nurse.

She had earned an associate’s degree in general studies with a goal to move into a nursing program. But, according to Melissa, life events intervened. Family health issues delayed her start.

“My husband and I then moved to the Tri-Cities for his job,” she said. “I heard that CBC had a good nursing program, so I did one year of prerequisites before applying. I then applied and got in.”

She was on her way, but financing her education was a concern for the young couple; they were still paying medical bills.

During a nursing school orientation, she learned about Kadlec Foundation nursing scholarships. “The nursing school helped me through the whole process,” she said.

Last summer, she was awarded the June Marie Corrado, RN, Nursing Scholarship sponsored by Kadlec Foundation.

“Getting this scholarship has helped us out a lot and relieved one financial burden for us. It helps me to be able to focus on going to school and also helped us work on getting our medical bills paid while I go to school,” she said.

“I was so honored to get the scholarship, especially one in honor of a nurse. It does make a difference,” said Melissa.
