Our Mission StatementTo raise funds and create awareness

of the services which our hospital provides to maintain and improve the

quality of patient care.

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGEI am so very excited about all of the great things happening with our Hospital and Foundation. We are now a part of the University of Florida (“UF”) Health Network so let’s start with our new name. We are now officially UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. It has always been our commitment to you that all money we receive stays in our community. This has not changed as a result of our affiliation with UF and all of your generous donations will continue to be used for our hospital in The Villages®, and in our second hospital which is expected to break ground within two years and will be located in the southern portion of The Villages®.

The UF Health The Villages® Hospital Freestanding Emergency Department near Brownwood has opened and has been phenomenally successful. Our community has grown dramatically over

the past few years and now residents have access to a state-of-the-art facility in their own back yard and no longer need to travel to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Our thrift shop, Ye Olde Thrift Shoppe, located at 106 West Lady Lake Boulevard in Lady Lake is undergoing major renovations that will double its existing size. During the construction we will continue to operate but please pardon our sawdust! The expansion is scheduled to begin in April with an anticipated completion date in September. We are also looking for a second site to better serve our southern community and to display all of the wonderful furniture that we have but are not able to showcase.

The Gift Gallery has undergone a major face lift at our Hospital. We hired a retail consultant to study what is being sold and compared this to other hospitals in our area and around the country. Their recommendations have resulted in much better use of shelf space and many changes in the items that we have for sale. As a result, sales have dramatically increased and we are anticipating continued growth in the proceeds which are an integral part of our fund raising. Check out this great coffee mug I bought for my daughter and many other new items!

Our events continue to be nothing short of fabulous! This year’s Hearts for our Hospital Gala held on February 8th raised over $380,000.

None of this would happen without the incredible effort of all of the members of the board and the staff at our Foundation. I thank them and all of you so very much for your continued support.

Scott Sander, CPA, Chairman

UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation

UF Health The Villages® Hospital staff members and volunteers receive thanks every day… a smile, a handshake, a hug, or simple words that fill our hearts. The Kudos Korner is a special place where we showcase the appreciation of others. The following is an excerpt from a letter expressing one family’s gratitude.

“My 88-year-old mother was brought in (the hospital) around 7:00 p.m. via ambulance. One paramedic said she could be septic so she started sepsis protocols and alerted the hospital. When my mother arrived at the hospital, she had a cardiac arrest. Within minutes they moved my mother to a different Emergency Department room. Her nurse swiftly started the blood cultures and was ready to begin medications and testing. The doctor came in within a few minutes. My mother’s nurse was kind, compassionate and gave us the attention our family needed. She offered to update us after we left at midnight. At 5:45 a.m. the next morning she called to let us know how Mom was doing. She is such a wonderful nurse who takes pride in giving excellent care with dignity to her patients.”

If you like to share your gratitude for the care you or a family member received at the hospital, please email your story to www.tvrhfoundation.org. We will publish as many stories as space allows in each edition.

FREESTANDING EMERGENCY ROOMUF Health The Villages® Hospital Freestanding Emergency Room: Where Exceptional Care is the Standard of Care

The UF Health The Villages® Hospital Freestanding Emergency Room opened its doors on Monday, February 3, 2020 with a simple objective: to provide the residents in the southernmost parts of The Villages and Wildwood with exceptional emergency medical care. Under the inspired leadership of Cameron Beatty, RN, MBA, BSN, CEN, Director, that objective is being realized one patient at a time.

The 25,000 square foot facility currently features 16 private beds, two trauma bays and a decontamination and negative air pressure suite. It is equipped with state-of-the-art X-ray, CT and Ultrasound equipment and features an on-site lab. An emergency room physician is on site 24 hours a day and Jen Robertson, MD, a Villager, serves as medical director.

Exceptional care is the only standard of care for every member of Cameron’s carefully selected team of nurses, technicians, social workers, support staff and volunteers. While Cameron acknowledges that he is responsible for equipping his staff to do their jobs, they are the ones who make the choices that determine a patient’s experience. He instructs his team to make their decisions based on a simple question, “What can I do to provide exceptional care?” For each of them, the answer is different. For one it means making sure the lobby sparkles, for another it means updating the information on the whiteboard beside a patient’s bed. For the volunteers, it means making sure that the gown that

is placed on each patient’s bed is neatly folded with all the buttons snapped. As each team member chooses to be exceptional, each patient experiences exceptional care.

To date, more than a thousand individuals have been treated for a wide range of illness and injuries. According to Cameron, the patients make their way from the front door into a bed in less than five minutes. He adds: “In less than fifteen minutes, patients are face to face with an emergency room doctor. That is exceptional care.”

GIFT GALLERY… COME SEE HOW WE HAVE CHANGED!Our Gift Gallery, located in the main lobby of the hospital, has an exciting new look! It has been remodeled with a neater appearance and is well stocked with a wide selection of new merchandise. Our hope is to provide a great place to shop for customers who want that “special something”; a card, a magazine, or a thoughtful gift for a patient. All of us at the Gift Gallery are excited with the new appearance and look forward to increasing our support of the hospital.

Special thanks to our great consultant Elaine Cordeau, for her help and guidance, and to our Gift Gallery Chair, Joe LaLonde, for all his hard work (and long hours) to get the shop up and running. He had this to say now that the shop is open for business, “I look forward to working with all of the volunteers to help make our shop a great success.”

The gift shop is operated by UF Health The Villages® Hospital volunteers and all funds go to the Auxiliary Foundation in support of the UF Health The Villages® Hospital.

CABARET… A SHOWCASE OF LOCAL TALENT

The 14th annual Cabaret at the Savannah Center in January was a sensation! Played for over 860 people in two performances, this popular show features top talent (mostly Villagers). The Cabaret has certainly become a tradition in The Villages. “I think this show was the best ever,” said Foundation President Dick Campbell. Over the years the Cabaret has raised over $140,000 for the Auxiliary Foundation. This year, the proceeds of over $10,000 will be used to help fund the Foundation’s projects, including scholarships for area students planning careers in the medical field.

Ray Leggiero, producer and artistic director, has been at the helm for every one of the fourteen performances. He describes the show as one of the premier concerts featuring Villagers. “The performers and production team donate all their time and the show is something really special each year,” said Ray.

In 2019, the Foundation lost a dear friend in fellow performer, Mr. Chris Bolus. Chris was an important part of the Cabaret since its inception. The 2020 production was a tribute to Chris. In addition, the Auxiliary Foundation has purchased a memorial brick that will be placed in the Sharon L. Morse Celebration Garden which is nestled between the hospital and the Sharon Morse Medical Office Center.

Planning for the 15th annual Cabaret is underway with two performances (4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.) scheduled for January 16, 2021. The production showcases many favorite local performers as well as new acts. The show includes music from a wide variety of genres, comedy and magic. “The cast and I are very happy and proud that we are able to contribute to the Foundation,” Ray added.

For the month of APRIL, each time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at the Winn-Dixie located at 944 Bichara Blvd. in The

Villages, $1 will be donated to the Foundation.

SCHOLARSHIPSPONSORS

In 2017 the Auxiliary Foundation Board approved a contribution of $100,000 to establish an Endowment Fund. Since that time, the fund has increased to its current value of over $401,000 and will continue to grow with planned gifts from supporters of the Hospital and the Auxiliary Foundation that will allow the Endowment to flourish. Those gifts can take the form of bequests, charitable gift annuities, appreciated securities, insurance policies, and appreciated real estate. Endowment donors are generally interested in leaving a legacy and providing for the long-term future of the organization they support. Donations to the fund are invested by professional money managers and only the income from those investments can be used.

DOUG AND KENDRA AKERS Doug and Kendra Akers are perfect examples of all-American entrepreneurship in our local community. They started Akers Media Group in the face of the 2008 recession by selling their house and investing everything they had in the business. Failure was not in their vocabulary. While initially dealing with stress and many sleepless nights, they nurtured the company, with the help of partner Tim McRae, into the highly successful venture it is today.

Kendra and Tim had backgrounds in marketing and sales, while Doug had worked in the health-care industry. They had a vision to create a magazine while sitting on their back porch and sharing a bottle of wine, and Healthy Living magazine was born. “The magazine content was based on four pillars of health: physical, mental, financial, and spiritual,” Doug said. “If you achieve a balance, you are more likely to live a healthy lifestyle.” As owner/publisher, Kendra is responsible for the content and informational aspects of publishing, while Doug is the president and handles the business side of the operation. Tim is the company’s vice president of sales.

One year after launching Healthy Living, Akers Media responded to the need for information in The Villages by creating V-Life. In 2010, Akers Media bought Lake and Sumter Style magazine. Compelling stories and outstanding photography are trademarks of all Akers publications. Today, 17,500 copies of Style are distributed monthly, along with 5,000 copies of Healthy Living. Issues also are available digitally for a worldwide audience.

In addition to the award-winning publications, Akers Media is a full-service multimedia agency with an emphasis on creativity. The agency provides custom publishing, web design, marketing, video production, branding, and photography for its clients.

Akers Media is part of the fabric of Lake and Sumter counties. The company has been a solid supporter of many organizations in the community while providing more than $100,000 in charitable contributions last year. UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation has been a beneficiary of Akers Media’s generosity for many years. “We are happy to be involved with the Auxiliary Foundation as it carries out its mission to improve patient care,” Doug said. “We will continue to promote the annual Hearts for Our Hospital Gala in our publications and help out any way we can.”

SCOTT AND DEBBIE SANDERScott and Debbie Sander are strong supporters of UF Health The Villages® Hospital Auxiliary Foundation. They are Room Naming sponsors in the hospital in tribute to Debbie’s grandmother, who was also her best friend. They are also sponsors for the Hearts for Our Hospital Big Bike Weekend event, a substantial fundraiser for the Foundation. At the recent Gala, Scott and Debbie served on the Auction Procurement Committee that helped make the event a rousing success. Scott is currently serving as Chairman of the Board of the Foundation. They said, “We get pleasure from giving back and providing help where it is needed. We are fortunate to be able to serve the community and make a difference. We enjoy being involved.”

Debbie, born in Pittsburgh and raised in Miami, is a licensed real estate professional with The Properties of The Villages. She said, “I was so pleased to be welcomed into this position by my real estate colleagues when we first moved here five years ago. I love my work, and I enjoy helping out with the activities of the Foundation. Scott and I feel we are doing the right thing.” Debbie had an 18-year real estate career in Miami prior to moving to The Villages. Scott is a New Jersey native who relocated to South Florida and established a CPA firm in Hollywood, Florida. He subsequently opened a second office in The Villages. Sander & Associates, P.A. has proven expertise in tax planning and preparation, outsourced accounting, bookkeeping, and new business consulting with every business service aimed to deliver maximum benefit and value to clients.

Scott said, “The Auxiliary Foundation is very important to the well-being of area residents due to its ability to respond to the critical needs of the hospital. Examples include the purchase of a SimMan® Vascular Manikin, Vein Viewer® Flex devices, and i-mop high cleaning performance floor scrubbers. Furthermore, the Foundation provides scholarships to attract and retain people in the medical profession.” Debbie and Scott are happy to be part of the effort to carry out the Foundation’s mission of improving the quality of patient care.

Schedule Your “Behind-the-Scenes” Visit

Who would go to a hospital if they didn’t need to? The answer is easy - anyone who’s interested in seeing the future of healthcare in The Villages. The Auxiliary Foundation invites you to experience a “behind-the-scenes” look at our various service lines and training resource center.

Three separate tours are available. The general hospital tour will include an overview of the entire facility. Specialized tours of the Digital Vascular Surgery Suite and the Simulation Training Lab will highlight state-of-the-art technology in each of these areas.

For a general hospital tour, contact Deidre Rosemond at (352) 751-8173. If you are interested in learning more about the Digital Vascular Surgery Suite or the Simulation Training Lab, contact Dick Campbell at (352) 751-8871.
