during 2010, the Foundation Center took a hard look at its more than 50 years of achievement. We took stock of what we have done well—becoming the most trusted source of information for nonprofi ts seeking

foundation grants—as well as where we have fallen short—convincing foundations that our knowledge resources can help them achieve their missions. our successes with grantseekers can be documented in testimonials, like the development offi cer who wrote to tell us that the Center is her “go-to” resource for countless challenges and that our services have improved the impact her nonprofi t makes in the Bay Area—just as our failures with foundations are epitomized by a recent grant proposal rejection, sent to us by a foundation that recommended we consult the Foundation Center’s resources to identify other sources of funding. Clearly we have yet to demonstrate our value to this donor beyond being a referral for their applicants.

Made public in interactive blog form in February of 2011, our new strategic plan, “Foundation Center 2020,” articulates the Center’s vision—a world enriched by the effective allocation of philanthropic resources, informed public discourse about philanthropy, and broad understanding of the contribution of nonprofi t activity to increasing opportunity and transforming lives. “Foundation Center 2020” goes on to identify six strategic priorities

WHY InSIGHT? philanthropy has always been about values,

intuition, and conviction, all of which remain

as vital today as they were one hundred

years ago when Andrew Carnegie created his

foundation. But they are

no longer suffi cient. Today,

philanthropy has become

a global industry; social

investment is on the rise,

collaboration is more

necessary than ever, and radical changes in

technology are transforming everything. We are

awash in a sea of information, and real progress

on the issues about which we care the most will

only come through knowledge and insight.

to guide our transformation from a data publisher into a knowledge services organization:

> connect nonprofi ts to the resources they need to thrive;

> emPower donors with the knowledge tools they need to be more strategic;

> BuIlD the global data platform for philanthropy;

> communIcAte philanthropy’s contribution to making a better world;

> encourAGe greater foundation transparency;

> enSure that our technology provides a strong foundation for the Center’s work.

Two initiatives symbolize our dedication to knowledge services. The fi rst is Philanthropy In/Sight®, an online resource displaying information about more than 100,000 grantmakers and 2.4 million of their grants, all on familiar google maps. users can pick a subject as broad as “education” or as specifi c as “bilingual programs” and plot who is giving grants and who is getting them, in their own zip code or around the world. powered by the Foundation Center’s deep data resources, our goal is to make Philanthropy In/Sight the tool of choice for foundation professionals and donor advisors seeking the knowledge that can make their philanthropy more strategic.

The second initiative, grantspace, is a knowledge portal designed specifi cally for nonprofi ts. launched in october of 2010, grantspace contains online training, video, podcasts,

databases, and more. We want to make sure that nonprofi ts—hit hard by the recession and desperately in need of resources—have access to the insight our staff, trainers, nonprofi t professionals, and experts can bring, wherever they are and whenever they need it. A community of users—averaging 22,500 per month—is fast forming around grantspace as nonprofi ts not only gain access to knowledge resources but also become resources for each other.

This Annual Report describes many more ways in which the Foundation Center of today is preparing for the knowledge-driven philanthropy of tomorrow. you can fi nd us in more than 450 locations around the corner and around the globe, as well as online 24/7. so walk in, log on, and fi nd the insight you need to change the world.

GrantSpace Surges on the Scene!We have harnessed the power of technology to build community, share ideas, and offer knowledge that is indispensable in today’s nonprofi t landscape. This intuitive, state-of-the-art learning platform meets the unique needs of grantseekers; grantspace’s resources—all free—are organized under the most common subject areas of funding research (such as health, education, and the arts) and by skill sets (such as proposal writing, fundraising planning, and collaboration), connecting visitors to the right learning tools and the content most relevant to them.

Resources include: a rich multimedia collection, an extensive Knowledge Base, an “Ask us” link on each page, a comprehensive calendar of training in classrooms around the country and online, and content comment-ing and sharing functionality.

regional library/learning centerseach of our locations offers an ever-increasing variety of ways for local nonprofi ts to learn from experts, connect to each other, and get the resources they need to thrive. More access points—from on-site educational programs to active regional blogs and Twitter feeds—mean more opportunities for gaining crucial knowledge.

Within months, thousands registered to join GrantSpace, igniting a new community of engaged and energized fundraisers.Learn More: grantspace.org

in new York, the continued expansion of customized programs included events for Funding for education Month in May and Funding for Arts Month in october. At a dialogue with donors program presented in collaboration with the Arts & Business Council of new york, arts grantseekers in attendance heard directly from several local funders, and a video recording makes the program available to anyone.

in wASHInGton, Dc, we helped grantseekers diversify their funding base with the “out of the Foundation Box” series of programs, which included advice on raising funds through individuals, government sources, and special events.

“navigating the new normal” was a special series of 12 programs offered out of SAn FrAncISco, where grantmakers and guest experts addressed the challenges that continued to plague nonprofi ts in 2010 as a result of the sluggish economy. programs such as “The nonprofi t starvation Cycle” and “Corporate partnerships in a downsized World” helped attendees better understand how to adapt to and thrive in a fundamentally changed environment.

in AtlAntA, we have been proud to partner with prominent organizations, such as the southeastern Council on Foundations, the Andrew young school of policy studies, and others, to present nonprofi t issues Forum events. These programs bring together a broad cross-section of scholars, nonprofi t professionals, and grantmakers for discussions of cutting-edge ideas.

The staff in our clevelAnD offi ce has been a pioneering force behind the creation of multimedia content destined for Foundation Center web sites and social media channels. Flip camera interviews with visitors highlight both how local organizations are building a better community and how the Foundation Center has helped them in their work.

Building a Sustainable nonprofi t organizationour new full-day course goes beyond the strategies and tactics of fundraising that nonprofi ts have long relied on the Foundation Center to learn. This course is specifi cally geared to executives and helps those individuals evaluate how well their organizations align resources with mission, understand how to monitor and improve fi nancial health,

and assess the value and costs of diverse sources of support.

After the Grant getting a grant is just the beginning of a relationship, and cultivating that connection informs our newest curriculum—launched in

2010—that provides a roadmap for grantees to navigate the journey they embark upon after they’ve been awarded a foundation grant.

in our new book, grant winners get much-needed advice from experts on how to effectively manage grant funds and position themselves for funding in the future.

in our new course, attendees come full-circle, closing the loop on the grantseeking process and gaining true understanding of best practices in grant stewardship.

Helping nonprofi ts leverage connections through collaborationin partnership with the lodestar Foundation, the Foundation Center unveiled in May 2010 a web portal of comprehensive resources that facilitate and encourage collaboration among nonprofi ts. The cornerstone of the site is a database containing exemplary models of how nonprofi ts are serving their communities—by pooling knowledge, resources, and talent—with effi ciency and greater impact.

FOUNDATION DIRECTORY ONLINE (FDo) is the searchable database—which now holds profi les of more than 100,000 funders—that fundraisers rely on every day to identify donors whose priorities are in alignment with their own. A new social Media feature gives Professional users direct links to the Facebook, Twitter, youTube, and other social media accounts maintained by foundations, making Fdo a true one-stop shop for anyone needing access to in-depth information on private foundations.

Foundations for education excellenceFunded by the Charles stewart Mott Foundation, the Foundations for education excellence project enables grantmakers to learn about the education reform efforts of the u.s. department of education (usde) and other foundations. Through our collaboration with grantmaker membership organizations and the usde, thousands of funders working to improve educational opportunity for all glean insights from a timely and informative newsletter, hugely popular teleconferences and webinars, and the latest education research and other resources via a one-stop web portal.

Philanthropy In/Sight®: educationlaunched in 2010, this customized version of our robust mapping tool fosters strategic grantmaking in education: fi nding funding partners, identifying potential grantees, assessing needs, and demonstrating scope and reach of funding. Thanks to the JpMorgan Chase Foundation, education funders can register to use it for free.

Grants in a FlashThe newest way to share grants knowledge is through grantsfi re—an open, web-based format. developed in part with funding from the Charles stewart Mott Foundation, in 2010 grantsfi re became part of the Center’s egrant Reporting program used by more than 580 foundations throughout the world. it gives foundations another way to be transparent and to communicate about their contribution to the public good.

International Aid transparency Initiative The new international Aid Transparency initiative (iATi) brings together donor countries, developing nation governments, ngos, and experts to discover ways of sharing more and better information about aid spending. having signed on to the initiative in 2010, the Foundation Center is working to align our grant reporting standards and taxonomy with iATi in support

of the overall effort to link aid to results, limit duplication and waste, and improve research and learning.

Showcasing transparency at Glasspockets our glasspockets web site serves as a central source of knowledge that fuels the movement toward greater transparency in philanthropy. using basic facts about the nearly 97,000 foundations in the united states, glasspockets illustrates philanthropy’s impact on the issues that people care about and brings into focus the ways in which foundations tell the story of what they do, why they do it, and what difference they make.

Transparency Talk, a blog launched at glasspockets in 2010, is the new platform for candid and constructive conversation about foundation transparency and accountability, illuminating the importance of having “glass pockets.”

Grantmaker leadership PanelWe have assembled a prestigious group of 228 chief executives at leading u.s. foundations to participate in rapid-response surveys on critical issues of current interest. The expertise and insights of these individuals provide the fi eld with a springboard for debate and discussion. using this method, we reported in 2010 on such timely topics as foundations’ initial plans in response to the earthquake in haiti, Ceos’ engagement with social networking tools (see below), and prevailing opinions about diversity-related legislative efforts in California and Florida.

Social justicephilanthropy seeks in part to ensure economic, political, and social opportunity for marginalized populations. Key Facts on Social Justice Grantmaking illustrates the giving priorities of foundations engaged in efforts to promote greater equity.

Public Policyin recent years, more u.s. foundations have embarked upon efforts to inform the policymaking process. Key Facts on Public Policy-related Grantmaking is the fi rst report of its kind to benchmark the level of foundation commitment to supporting public policy-related activities and the strategies they employ.

Diversity A coalition of organizations known as d5, with connections to thousands of grantmakers, has agreed to work together to grow philanthropy’s diversity, equity, and inclusion over fi ve years. The Foundation Center serves as research convener for the group, helping to develop the crucial benchmark data required to measure progress toward goals. in April we published the proceedings from a national Diversity Metrics Forum held at the Foundation Center.

economic recoveryour research shows that giving by u.s. foundations is poised for modest overall growth in 2011, but it may take several years for giving to match the peak level recorded in 2008. in Moving Beyond the Economic Crisis: Foundations Assess the Impact and Their Response, the Foundation Center concludes our series of reports that shed light on the effect of the great Recession on foundations—and their response—as events unfolded.

educationin June 2010, we published Race to the Top: What Grantmakers Can Learn From the First Round, documenting the experiences of grantmakers, government leaders, and education consultants in states that applied for the u.s. department of education’s 2010 “Race to the Top” competi-tion. it offers critical lessons on grantmaker and government collaborations for education reform and beyond.

communities of color in oregongrantmaker networks that wish to document the level of foundation funding for diverse populations turn to the Foundation Center to help tell the story. in this case, grantmakers of oregon and southwest Washington partnered with the Foundation Center to conduct a detailed analysis that entailed creating the fi rst-ever data set to represent both large and small foundations across an entire state.
