In 1924, Brentwood, Maryland,
Nellie P. Moss formed Girl Scout troop #66 Troop #66 was for black
girls in the Brentwood,Melrose, Hyattsville and
Bladensburg areas.She has special plansfor her girls, such aswonderful meetings,demonstration cooking
classes, drama, vacationsat Carrs Beach nearAnnapolis, oratoricalcontests, lessonscleanliness dances at the
club house and of coursecamping. Most of all herinsistence on theimportance of education.remembrances of

In 1934, Lelia Scott Thomas and Henrietta
Green formed the first Brownie and Girl Scouttroops for African American girls in the Districtof Columbia at the Dunbar Recreation Center
African American troops all belong to District
7 it is somewhat like are current Association
structure but District 7 was the only district that
black troops were assigned because of
segregation.
In 1938, African American troops were activein Alexandria and Arlington Virginia. They
also belonged to District 7.

Lois Bell - President, 1987-1993Girl Scout Council of the Nations Capital
In the 1940s, Lois Belljoined Brownie Girl Scouts
with her mother as herleader in Jamica, NewYork. In 1963 she becamea leader of her daughters
troops, serving in manycapacities she became thepresident of GSCNC an thewent on the serve on the

principal and educator.
