It was in April 2006 that I first launched fotoii.com, a website devoted to ph

graphy. Showcasing the work of talented photographers from around the world, it

now been seven years since we have served as an online community and virtual ex

tion space. As exciting and wonderful as this enterprise has been, however, we wan

something more the printed page a classic format that has, for decades, prove

be one of the best ways of presenting photographic images to a wider public. With F

Mag, everything from the paper stock to the page layout, to the text will be in serof the image and the image alone.

As you will see over the following pages, Fotoii Mag really runs the gamut of

tography, showcasing photographers who not only come from around the world but

also and perhaps more importantly given the hyperconnectivity of our world, take

cally different approaches to their medium.

This, our preview issue, will give you an idea of the scope of our editorial vision

our three featured photographers coming from Switzerland, Spain, and China and wh

works may be described respectively as conceptual, documentary, and fashion.

Virginie Otth is a Swiss artist whose Internal Dimension series of concep

still lifes continues her exploration into and questioning of the photographic mediumconcept of perception.

Txema Salvans is a Spanish photographer whose chilling documentary photo

phic essay, The Waiting Game, depicts prostitutes plying their trade along the highw

of the Mediterranean coast. Kiki Xue is a Chinese photographer whose sensitive appro

to his subjects reveals their inner beauty and, not incidentally, expands our understan

    of fashion photography.

With this and future issues, we hope to share our passion for photography

you, our reader. Fotoii Mag will be published six times annually. Every two months we

explore various subjects and feature photographers from around the world. In addi

we will keep you updated with the latest photography-related activities. So please joi

on this journey in which you will discover photographers who are truly passionate ab

    their work.

We do hope you enjoy discovering this preview issue of Fotoii Mag, and would

to thank you for subscribing and supporting the work of the photographers and Fo

    Mag team.

The enigma is this: that my body is all at once seeing and s

    Maurice Merleau-Ponty

This image has its origins in a return to the organic

necessity to observe that which observes, and therefore... to dis

an eye. Through my research into visual perception, the relation

between our optical apparatus and the brain, the eye and the mcame to realise that I would need to perform this dissection in o

to truly be able to observe that which observes. This mental laby

fascinates me, and is explored in the first image, Internal Dimens

which is also the title of the exhibition. Here, the organ is as re

it is mysterious, suspended within a mental, almost virtual spa

faithful version, a literal version, an original version, a photogra

version, a multiplied perception... the subject matters little in this

position captured with tools that serve the gaze.

I wanted to play with the potential reality of the object/su

relationship through multiplying viewpoints, lighting, focus and

dia... to observe the gaze upon an object and ways of presenta

I like this slow and endless work, which begins with the observ

of varying light on the same objects in the manner of Giorgio Mo

this infinite luxury of setting aside problems of meaning on a su

in order to work the medium and our perception of things, light

emptiness. And if it is true, as Merleau-Ponty said, that, thoug

deliberately reduced to whatever set of recording or capturing t

niques it has invented, then a potential for infinite perception unf

You notice their absence when they are

not there. Plump, thin, young, not so young, flesh

exposed, dressed to kill; for those of us who drive

up and down the sunny highways of Spains Me-

diterranean coast, they are as much a part of the

landscape as the petrol stations, the palm trees or

the sea itself. Always alone, always waiting, alwaysopen for business, like the flower petals, which

    court the bees in summer.

Every once in a while one will catch your

eye and youll find yourself wondering what might

be going through her mind. It is not a happy line

of speculation. You imagine her to be impatient,

perhaps forlorn, as one car after another speeds

past, oblivious to her charms. And surely amidst all

this frustration, there must also be at least a hint

of dread. What if the man who stops is unwashed

and ugly as sin, or a nutcase, or a sadistic monster? And where will he take her so she can fake the so-

called act of desire? To some filthy private den, or

will the back of the car or even the bushes suffice?

And when the moment finally comes, is she hard

enough not to feel sick to her heart? Does she hate

herself deep down inside? Or is she armed with a

mental shut-off mechanism that takes over while

her body does the work? Is she able, like a surgeon,

to erect an emotional barrier between herself and

the probing intimacy that her profession requires?

Next, you might find yourself wondering

where she comes from. Do her parents in far away

Albania, the Ukraine or Colombia, know how she

earns the money that she sends home? Most pro-

bably not and it is probably better to keep them

in the dark. And has she a child that she hasnt

seen in months or even years? Is it perhaps for this

childs future that she waits by the side of the road

day after day, striving to get together the cash nee-

ded to pay for her childs clothing, food and educa-

tion; or, if it is a girl, hoping that when she grow

she wont have to do for a living what her mo

    does now?

There are likely also other consolat

other arguments that she uses to justify her

to herself, like the belief that the alternative w

be less lucrative, if not actually worse. Currhalf an hour of her time could be worth a ful

of washing dishes or cleaning floors. She m

also believe, or at least fool herself into belie

that other lines of work would be just as soul

troying, if not more so. Doing this she at leas

a chance to earn enough money to make it

home sooner than she might have done had

worked in a kitchen or a strangers home,

perhaps fulfill a dream, like that of buying a s

flat or starting out again on another, less sordid

of business. And who knows? She might juslucky and be able to avoid the unwashed mon

altogether; she might just find a regular clie

two with whom she can build something that

like trust, or possibly even a smidgen of affec

thus soothing the otherwise heartbreaking lo

    ness of her lot.

Heartbreaking is the word, which com

mind. Vulnerable is another one. Having exam

the possible thoughts that might be going thr

her mind as she waits there alone by the sid

the road, these are the words that stay with y

sense of someone who tries to act tough and

reliant but who is really gentle, lonely and sa

heart. Someone who is at the mercy of forces

which she has limited control, someone who, o

sheer need, has sacrificed her intimacy and di

reducing her life to a solitary battle for surviva

Ostensibly fashion photographs, these images by Beijing photographer Kiki Xue are at once elegant, bea

tiful and alluring. But they are also touched with a certain restrained sensuality and clear mystery, enabli

him to conjure up the intimate lives of the women portrayed alluding to their inner serenity and hidd

passions, a depiction of the masks that indeed we all wear and evocative of the death of passion.

It was as a college student majoring in mathematics that Kiki

Xue first fell in love with photography both for its capacity to pro-

duce exact representations and for its extraordinary creative poten-

tial. Starting with a 2010 appearance in one of Chinas online fashion

magazines, Xue has since been featured in Italian Vogue among

    others.

This young fashion photographer focuses on the emotions ofhis models as revealed in their expressions, demeanour and move-

ments, while the power of his photographs may be said to be derived

from his rigorous commitment to simplicity and the truth of the mo-

ment. Embracing the axiom that true beauty lies within, it is this inner

beauty that Xue strives to reveal in his works. As such and somewhat

paradoxically, he is able to enrich his images by keeping them de

rately simple and natural. For Xue, life itself that is, the momen

transpires before the camera requires no augmentation, no art

intervention. Rather, it is this life, which will itself provide the ma

a magic to be captured by Xues camera, discovering every d

every expression, every emotion that is revealed in the eyes, face

movements of these women. As can be clearly seen from the images in the Inner Be

series, this is a photographer who loves women, using the came

reveal what lies deep in their hearts. As his often poetic titles sug

his work is also revelatory of Xues own heart, his own inner v

and emotions, as well as those of his subjects.

The Deep Sleep is a study of

the aesthetics of sentience, an explora-

tion of the possibility of an aesthetics

beyond our all too human perception, a

questioning of the objecthood of the

things and creatures that surround us.

Although we are only able to experienceobjects through the qualities they mani-

    fest, Diana Monkhorst suggests here

that there is always something more,

something which is able to transcend

these qualities; a mysterious depth or

    soul-like feature which can suspend

    our ordinary attitudes toward objects

    and which eludes clear description.
