Alternative Energy

Fossil Fuelsvs.

Alternative Energy

Renewable vs. Non-renewable• Renewable energy sources can be

replenished in a short period of time.  • The five renewable sources used most

often are: Solar, Wind, Biomass, hydropower and geothermal.

• Non-renewable energy sources can not be replenished (made again) in a short period of time.

• Examples are coal, oil (petroleum) and natural gas (methane)=(Fossil Fuels)

Traditional Energy Sources

Negatives:• Not Sustainable (to supply)• Environmental impact• CO2 Emissions (green house

effect)

Fossil Fuels= fuels made from the remains of dead plants and animals millions of years ago.

Positives:•Generally Inexpensive•Versatile in its uses•Easily transported

•Coal •Oil•Natural Gas

Fossil Fuels• Coal• Oil• Natural

Gas

Fossil Fuels• Coal• Oil• Natural

Gas

Also known asPositives:•Readily available •Versatile in its uses•Inexpensive •Easily transported

Negatives:•Strip-mining•Releases CO2 into atmosphere•Nonrenewable•Health concerns

Anthracite, Bituminous, Lignite

When burned, provides more than 50% of the electricity in the Unites States!

Gas •Easily transported•Versatile in its uses

Negatives:•Releases CO2 into atmosphere•Nonrenewable•Environmental impact

Also know as PetroleumPositives:

Fossil Fuels• Coal • Oil• Natural

Gas •Burns cleaner than coal•Easily transported•Versatile in its uses (propane gas is used in gas grills)

Negatives:•Releases CO2 into atmosphere•Explosive•Nonrenewable

Also know as MethanePositives:

Why do we need alternative energy resources?

• Fossil fuels take millions of years to be made.

• We are consuming fossil fuels worldwide at an alarming rate with no end in sight!

• We are Destroying the environment and its’ ecosystems.

• More animals are becoming extinct and endangered everyday!

Recently Extinct Animals

• Passenger Pigeon 1914

• North America

• Golden Toad 1989

• Costa Rica

Recently Extinct Animals

• Caribbean Monk Seal 1952

• Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico

• Pyrenean Ibex 2000

• France and Spain

Recently Extinct Animals

• Tecopa Pupfish 1981

• California

• Baiji River Dolphin 2006

• China

WHAT ARE FOUR REASONS WHY WE NEED TO FIND ALTERNATIVE FUELS?

•Fossil fuels take millions of years to be made.

•*Fossil fuels are beginning to run out worldwide*

•Destroying the environment and ecosystems.

•Animals are becoming extinct and endangered!

Alternative Energy Sources• Nuclear• Solar• Wind• Geothermal• Hydroelectric• Hydrogen

Fuel• Biodiesel

Alternative Energy Sources• Nuclear• Solar• Wind• Geothermal• Hydroelectric• Hydrogen

Fuel• Biodiesel

Alternative Energy Sources• Nuclear• Solar• Wind• Geothermal• Hydroelectric• Hydrogen

Fuel• Biodiesel

Positives:• Low Fuel Cost• Little Pollution

Negatives• Disposal of Radioactive waste• Meltdowns• Safety

• Ex-Salem Nuclear Power Plant (NJ)

Alternative Energy Sources• Nuclear• Solar• Wind• Geothermal• Hydroelectric• Hydrogen

Fuel• Biodiesel

Alternative Energy Sources• Nuclear• Solar• Wind• Geothermal• Hydroelectric• Hydrogen

Fuel• Biodiesel

Positives:• Sustainable• Non-Polluting

Negatives• Large areas needed• Doesn’t work at night or on

cloudy days very well• Not very efficient (40% at

best)• Solar panels are expensiveEx. DuPont
