Introduction
The Free Software movement came into being in1983 when Richard Stallman set up the FreeSoftware Foundation (FSF) to advocate the usersfreedom to run the program for any purpose, study& modify the program, and to redistribute copiesof original or modified programs. In late 1990s,
the Open Software Initiative (OSI) focused on thetechnical values of making source code open todevelop powerful and reliable software at a rapidrate.
Benefits of F/OSS (Free/Open Source Software)include security, reliability, stability, openstandards and vendor independence, localizationfeatures and developing local software capacity ; itobviates piracy & IPR problems, and provides costeffective and affordable solutions .
Linus Torvalds, a student at the University ofHelsinki, created the first version of *Linux*Operating System kernel in August 1991 andreleased it under GNU General Public License(GPL) of FSF. Since then, F/OSS Movement hasgrown by leaps and bounds, with internetproviding a powerful medium of collaboration fordevelopers and users across the globe. There arehundreds of thousands of F/OSS products freelydownloadable from the web. Apache, MySQL,Postgres, Firefox etc.
What makes Linux so popular?
Its Free and Its Open Source It is modular and has choice of components It has full multitasking & 32 bit support It is portable and stable It has got tremendous networking capabilities
