Military Humor: When bad things happen to nice
people in boot camp.
1. Getting a food package from anyone.
2. Stamping your name on the wrong side of
your shirt and not finding out until you
wear it during first major inspection. (It
happened to me.)
3. Having the same last name as the D.I.
Readers Digest told of a D.I, named SSgt
Stone who had a terrified recruit named Pvt
Stonebreaker.
4. Having your rifle fall apart on a D.I.’s foot.
MEMBERS MATTER by Lyle McFarlin
I was born April 8, 1933, in St. Louis,
Missouri. I was raised in St. Louis, attending
Saint Mathew Lutheran Grade School and
Lutheran High, but I graduated from Hanley
Technical High in 1951. I entered the Marine
Corps in April, 1953. I went to boot camp at
MCRD in San Diego, California, and served in
Honor Platoon 147. My DI was Sergeant
Barnhardt; my serial number was 1129590.
My memory is still pretty much intact.
I went to advanced Infantry training at Camp
Pendleton, California. I was supposed to go to
Korea but they sent two dozen of us to the
Navy at Jacksonville, Florida for Airman Basic
Training. Then I was sent to Millington Air
Force Base near Memphis, Tennessee for
Aviation Metalsmith training.
I was then sent to Ogallala, Third Marine
Airwing, near Miami, Florida. I went to Puerto
Rico for a few months, worked with a squadron
of 85 dive bombers. I got out of the Corps in
1955.
I went to Parks College, got an Associate’s
Degree, and an FAA license to work on any
certificated aircraft. I worked for Ozark
Aviation for a year and a half, then went to
McDonnell Aircraft, working on F-101s for a
year and a half. I moved on to Eastern Airlines
where I worked for thirty years before retiring.
During a brief strike at Eastern I worked at the
U. S. Army Transportation Command here in
St. Louis for a year. I then returned to Eastern
Airlines and the last five years I was in charge
of Aircraft Maintenance. After that I worked at
TWA (Trans World Airlines) a couple of
months; then spent another ten years working
for UPS, airline division.
I married my lovely wife Donnis in February,
1958, after Parks college. We had a son in
November, 1958, a daughter in 1962.
I worked with a battalion of Young Marines in St.
Louis from 1966 to 1976. That is when I met Gene
Richter, Pvt. George Phillips Detachment
Commandant (now deceased) and detachment
member Hank Coleman. The three of us worked
with these youngsters. I was their Commandant for a
while. We had them organized, our three hundred
boys into companies, platoons, and squads. We
gathered them two weekends a month for military
training. We also took them on trips to DC,
Annapolis, the Air Force Academy and state parks
for fun and training. Our Chaplain, whose regular
job was Chaplain at the Concordia Seminary, was
General Scharleman, now deceased. He was also a
Chaplain with General George Patton’s troops during
WWII. Our son and daughter were both involved in
the Young Marines. program.
During my adult life I actually built four houses. One
was high in the mountains of Colorado, where I shot
two elk from our property. I also shot one buffalo,
and participated in controlled shooting for eight
years, ending in 1998. And we ice fished. We were
living above nine thousand feet. Bears, mountain
sheep, and elk were among our neighbors.
I have been on the Greater St. Louis Honor flight for
Veterans to visit DC, Arlington Cemetery, and the
Military Memorials and I also visited these site with
the Vets Roll, a four-day bus trip from Beloit,
Wisconsin for two hundred Veterans, one hundred
guardians, to honor them for their service.
I became a member of the Private George Phillips
detachment in 2007. My wife, Donnis, is active with
the detachment auxiliary. With some health issues,
we try to stay active and are very active with our
church.
I am Ted Eberley.
Note from editor Carl E. Ramsey. A couple of years
ago at a Marine Corps Birthday Lunch, Ted and I
discovered we had a special connection when asked
the popular Saint Louis question, “Where did you go
to high school?” We each attended the original
Saint Louis Lutheran High School by Forest
Park, for one year. Only he was a Freshman the
first year it was a four year high school in
1948-1949, months before I was born (October
12, 1949), and I was a Freshman the last year it
was a four year high school in 1964-1965.
That’s when the school changed its name to
Lutheran High School North, and moved
during a special Spring break to its current
location in Saint Louis County beside Norwood
Hills Country Club. During Lutheran North
Spring break in 1968 I joined the Marines on
the 120 day delay plan, and would also go to
Jacksonville, Florida for the Air Wing.
ATTENTION ON DECK by Lyle McFarlin
Members of our detachment have an opportunity to
join the Military Order of the Devil Dogs (MODD),
the fun and honor society of the Marine Corps
League. Devil Dog meetings are designed to have
fun; no pressures, and we really focus on helping
children and children’s hospitals. We have given a
lot of money to Children’s hospitals from the state
and national levels of the Order.
In the St. Louis, MO area the MODD is represented
by Pound 66 of the Devil Dogs, which meets
quarterly at the South St. Louis MCL Detachment #
183, 5700 Leona St., St. Louis. Meetings are held
quarterly. Activities include fund raising BBQs for
the annual Toys for Tots campaign; and other events
where we raise money for children’s charities,
gathering to enjoy the company of others who have
honorably served in the Marine Corps.
Mongrels (those applying for membership) must be
recommended by a current Member of the Devil
Dogs, and their application endorsed by the
Commandant of the applicant’s MCL detachment,
certifying that the applicant is an MCL member in
good standing.
Being a Devil Dog is another means for a Marine to
continue giving back to our country, supporting our
nation’s children, while having a good time with
others who, like you, stepped up to serve. Contact a
current member of the Devil Dogs if you are
interested in joining us. Those in Pvt. George
Phillips Detachment # 1214, MCL may contact any
of the following Devil Dogs for further information:
Lyle McFarlin, 314, 630-5647
Jerry Gerling, 636, 271-3778
Elliot Glassman, 314, 322-0550
Ted Eberley, 636, 398-4293
Ed Rau, 636, 978-3522
You are encouraged to consider membership with
Marines of all generations.
