Celebrating 40 years!

ANNUAL REPORT 2015

Educate. Empower. Enrich.

Page 2: FORWARD - FamilyWise

Dear Friends,40 & FORWARD! It is hard to believe that it has been 40 years since a small group of committed women decided to find a way to keep kids safe and strengthen families. Much has changed since that time, and yet too much has remained the same.

What has changedTremendous growth and expanding our expertise to a continuum of services for families struggling with barriers to safety. FamilyWise has grown in numbers of clients and geographic area served, staffing and budget. Particularly in the last three years. By 2015, 3,990 individuals and 1,640 households were served. This represents an 83% service increase from 2012 along with a budget growth from an approximate $1.9 million to $2.8 million. FamilyWise now owns two buildings and practices out of four satellite locations throughout the extended Twin Cities metropolitan area.

FamilyWise has brought innovative practices to the region with programming like High Fidelity Wraparound. FamilyWise is the only credentialed provider in the metro to offer this evidence-based program to address the complex traumas of youth with unmanaged mental health issues at risk of out-of-home placement and education failure. FamilyWise is the largest provider of Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange in Minnesota. FamilyWise has expanded programming beyond intervention to include prevention in initiatives such as our teen parent and early childhood programs.

What has stayed the sameThe commitment to offering programming impacting two generations is still a hallmark of all we do. We still know that parents love their children and that they do the best they can with the resources they have. Our role is to teach them skills to end intergenerational cycles of violence and poverty. Our commitment to not doing this work alone remains, collaborating with county and community partners.

Unfortunately, families still need our help. Families are still experiencing violence and poverty, and the systems designed to help them still struggle with disparities. We remain committed to addressing these disparities.

Looking forwardIn the years to come, we commit to tackle some of the more intractable problems facing families. We will be investing in research in best practices around mentor training and visitation curriculum, improving our evaluation processes and program innovations to protect children and to prepare parents. As experts, our staff will be credentialed to train others in the community. Our role as a community leader propels us into these new arenas. We look to you, our stakeholders, to provide your insights, guidance and support as we embark on the next 40.

Ashley is a four-year-old girl. Like many others, she loves Hello Kitty and nail polish. Unlike many other preschoolers, Ashley has faced some significant challenges. Her mother, Rachel, was only 15 when Ashley was born. Like many young, single mothers, Rachel struggled. Rachel’s boyfriend was abusive to both mother and daughter. Getting to school consistently was difficult. It was the courage of a four-year-old which led to this family getting help.

Ashley told a caring adult the real story about getting hit. This conversation resulted in Ashley being moved to living with foster parents, while Rachel began to work on a plan to keep herself and her daughter safe.

Through FamilyWise’s facilitation of Supervised Visitation services, Rachel

was able to see Ashley on a weekly basis and practice safe parenting. It was during a Supervised Visitation session that Rachel learned about the Bright Beginnings program, which works with teen mothers.

In Bright Beginnings, she met Bertha, who has been guiding our teen parents for over seven years. “Rachel was a good parent but she couldn’t see through the violence” says Teen Parenting staff, Bertha. Bertha helped Rachel to understand that part of being a good parent is taking care of yourself. For Rachel, that meant acknowledging the violence that was impacting her life and prohibiting her access to her daughter. Teen Parenting classes educated Rachel on warning signs of domestic abuse, the effects that abuse can have on the entire family, and

developing self-worth. Rachel came to teen parenting meetings faithfully.

Because Rachel worked hard and showed changes through both Supervised Visitation and Teen Parenting classes, she regained custody of Ashley and she took steps through the court system to protect herself and her daughter. “This was a huge success for her,” says Bertha.

Rachel has now successfully completed the Teen Parenting Program and is continuing her education by enrolling in college. Ashley is now five years old, and on track to a healthy, happy life with her mother. Ashley didn’t understand at the time all the changes her family would face, but telling someone her story has created a new story for her and her family.
