forum for future of energy can need meet availability?
TRANSCRIPT
The global energy landscape is fast evolving. There are bountiful opportunities, new fossil fuel sources, rapid technological developments and concomitantly, the promise of a global energy supply excess. At the same time, there are 1.4 billion people with no access to electricity and many millions more with notional access. This is the contemporary global energy paradox.
CONCEPT
Nearly half of those without access to modern commercial energy reside in India. The Forum will focus on policies, market linkages and technological solutions in the electricity, coal, oil and gas sectors. The aim will be to provoke meaningful conversations and debates around the future of energy and implications for India, placing them within the context of the global energy paradox and India’s realities.
Pre-identified speakers from the policy sphere, relevant private and civil society institutions will anchor plenary and panel discussions on specific themes on the day of the forum. Open floor discussions will allow the audience to participate in the conversations that ensue. The day’s proceedings will culminate in a dinner.

SessionFUTURE OF ENERGY- CAN
NEED MEET AVAILABILITY?
# Session 1
OIL AND GASThe New Supply Paradigm
Contrary to past expectations, there is an abundance of oil and gas reserves globally, with new technologies and explorations creating a new supply paradigm. It is imperative for India to create requisite policies, strategic engagements and infrastructure to gain benefits, and further integrate into global supply chains. Can India catch the “Abundant Gas Bus” or will paternalistic policies ensure “need never meets availability”?

# Session 2 ENSURING COAL
SUPPLYDomestic Coal, Export
Linkages and the Global Market
Coal is the most critical fossil fuel for India. It currently accounts for the largest proportion of primary energy consumption, At the same time, the global coal market has witnessed unprecedented price volatility over the past few years. Can domestic availability be expected to keep pace with demand? Will imported coal be the new “import addiction”? can India ramp up its coal infrastructure?
