A COFFEE ENTHUSIASTS GUIDE TO BREW METHODS

Millions of consumers drink coffee prepared in coffeehouses every day, and the average coffee drink costs

at least $3. This habit can add up to many dollars spent in coffeehouses and cafes over the course of a year.

However, countless individuals have chosen to go another route: Making café-quality coffee all from the

comfort of their own home. With quality beans, equipment, and accessories, even the most inexperienced

coffee lovers can learn to prepare exquisite coffee on a regular basis. The purpose of this document is to

provide the reader with tips on implementing several of the most common brewing techniques.

A NOTE ABOUT QUALITY BREWING EQUIPMENT AND BEANS

Using quality equipment and fresh, gourmet coffee beans

is essential to the art of brewing a great cup of coffee.

Regardless of how skilled an individual is at creating a fine

cup of java, inferior beans will not produce a memorable

brew. Using inferior scales, grinders and other equipment

often leads to problems, such as inaccurate measurements

and poorly ground beans.

No matter what your brew method of choice, start off with

crystal clear water heated to roughly 205° Fahrenheit and

use a high-quality burr grinder immediately before brewing

to capture all the delightful aromas and flavors in your next

cup of coffee.

POUR-OVER METHODS WITH A HARIO DEVICE

DIRECTIONS FOR HARIO DEVICE

The pour-over coffee preparation method is probably the fastest and most efficient technique that a person can utilize. This involves a simple, cone-shaped piece of equipment, like a Hario device.

1. To start, place a filter inside the cone-shaped device

and quickly rinse the filter with hot water for roughly five

seconds.

2. After measuring your coffee beans and grinding them to

a medium-fine level, pour the ground coffee into the cone

and settle the grounds.

3. Start your pour slowly, pouring just enough water to

evenly wet the grounds and...

Allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ for 45 seconds.

4. After the bloom releases the aromas and flavors from

the beans, continue to pour water over the beans in small

circles around the center of the dripper.

5. Keep your water level steady throughout the process.

Rinsing the filter helps seal it to the cone, while removing

any papery residue that may end up affecting the taste

of your coffee.

Aim for a final brewing time of no longer

than two and a half minutes.

AUTO-DRIP BREWING

USING AN AEROPRESS

One of the most common brewing techniques is the auto-drip method.

Brewing coffee via auto-drip uses a machine that

heats up clean, filtered water before transferring it to

a separate compartment that contains ground coffee.

The beans are immersed in a flow of hot water, and

fresh brew drips into a container. If possible, try using

a machine that uses an insulated carafe to maintain

optimum temperature on your brew.

Many coffee lovers seem to enjoy the AeroPress device for its consistency in quality, ease of use and portability.

1. Start your AeroPress brew by heating water to a boil

and letting it sit for approximately one minute,

2. Drizzle a little warm water through the filter and add

the coffee.

3. After the coffee is added, pour the water over the

coffee until it reaches the top line on the AeroPress,

stirring the mix with a paddle stirrer,

4. After the minute is up, stir the mix once more before placing the plunger of the Aeropress over your coffee slurry. Press down on the plunger, applying steady pressure until you hear a long hissing sound indicating the coffee is ready to serve.

DIRECTIONS FOR THE AEROPRESS

Aiming for a temperature between 175°F - 195° F

Allow the coffee to steep for one minute.

BREWING WITH CHEMEX

The Chemex Coffeemaker not only features a timeless design worthy of the Museum of Modern Art, but it also helps even novice at-home baristas create exceptional, full-bodied cups of coffee from the comfort of home.

1. To prep your Chemex for brewing, place a specialty

Chemex filter and rinse with hot water to create a nice,

even seal between the coffeemaker and the filter while

preheating the Chemex itself.

2. Grind your coffee to a size similar to that of kosher salt,

and saturate your grounds and stir,

3. At 45 seconds, start your second pour with a wiggling

motion, before slowly transitioning to a smooth spiraling

motion to ensure all the grounds are saturated and...

Allow the coffee to ‘bloom’ for 45

DIRECTIONS FOR CHIMEX

Allow the coffee to bloom for 45 seconds.

Letting the coffee brew for about 4 minutes.

BREWING WITH A FRENCH PRESS

A French Press is a simple device that is portable and easy for almost anyone to use.

1. The process begins by coarsley grinding your coffee

and preheating the French Press itself to preserve the

temperature of your coffee.

2. From there, coffee is added to the bottom of the press

and the first pour begins.

3. Pour slightly off boiled water over the grounds to saturate,

and fill up your French Press about half way and...

4. Once a minute has passed, stir the grounds to break the

‘crust’ of the coffee.

5. Add the remainder of your hot water, filling your French

Press to where the metal meets the glass.

Set a timer for four minutes, and then press down firmly on the plunger and serve.

DIRECTIONS FOR THE FRENCH PRESS

Allow the coffee to steep for one minute.

BREWING WITH VACUUM OR SIPHON DEVICES

If you’re really looking to impress your friends with every brew, the vacuum pot is the way to go. With its origins tracing back to 19th century Germany, this full immersion brewer creates a delicious cup every time as long as you can master the meticulous methodology.

DIRECTIONS FOR VACUUM OR SIPHON DEVICES

1. The first step to siphoning your coffee is to attach your

metal or cloth filter and sink it, attaching the clip to the

bottom of the top funnel.

2. Next, add pre-heated water to the bottom globe and

start heating.

3. While the burner is on high, loosely set your funnel inside

the globe as you wait for the water to boil.

4. While the water is warming up, measure out and grind

your coffee.

5. Once the boil starts, firmly attach the top funnel to the

globe and add your coffee as the vapor pressure begins to

fill the funnel with water.

6. Adjust the burner to a lower flame,

7. After a minute and a half has gone by, turn the heat off

to begin filtering your coffee. Once the coffee is transferred

from the funnel to the globe, carefully remove the funnel,

serve and enjoy.

As with the French press, a coarser ground of beans

should be used.

Stirring periodically for 1.5 minutes to ensure

everything is completely saturated.

Brewing coffee like a barista may seem like a complicated process, but

doing it beautifully simply involves implementing one of several proven

techniques. Once a person has practiced any of these techniques a few

times, making superior coffee should be an easy and enjoyable endeavor.

The key is to always use quality beans, accessories, and equipment to

create the perfect brew from the comfort of home.
