FORT WORTH CIVIL ENGINEER Fort Worth Branch ASCE Newsletter w fwacse.org Vol. 3, No.3 w November 2007 LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT ADVANCE THE BRANCH! That is the theme for the Fort Worth Branch in 2007-2008. On August 27, 2007, we had our Branch Planning and Leadership Conference, and I tasked our officers and committee chairs to help advance our Branch. So far, we are off to a great start. On the Advance the Branch front, we are investigating alternative sites to host our monthly branch meetings and are assisting the Texas Section with the Branch Mentoring Program. We may also be looking into updating our web-site to provide more information to you on Branch activities. I’ll have more on these items as we continue throughout this year. On October 4th-6th, we had a world-class Texas Section meeting at the Doral Tesoro. The events were highlighted by numerous continuing education classes, outstanding technical paper presentations, and trips to see the new Dallas Cowboys stadium and Eagle Mountain Lake. Some of you even got to party Friday night at the Speedway! Feedback from the Texas Section was tremendous. I would like to personally thank all who were involved in organizing the event and also those who volunteered their time to help out and assist during the meeting. The next Section meeting will be in the spring in Corpus Christi. We have had two recent Branch meetings in September and October that were outstanding. In September, Dr. Ken Rainwater, from Texas Tech, installed our incoming officers and also did the lunch presentation, discussing groundwater issues in Texas. In October, Dr. Hossain, from University of Texas at Arlington, presented his program on high-resolution resistivity imaging for site investigations. Both meetings were well attended. Mark Perkins, our program chair, has already scheduled some great programs for upcoming monthly meetings as well, including a presentation from the local chapter of Engineers Without Borders in December. You don’t want to miss this! We have an excellent team of people leading the Branch this year! Mark Perkins is our President-Elect and Program Chair. Scott Berman is our secretary, keeping track of the Board and Branch meeting minutes and sending our reports to the Texas Section. Scott also did (continued on Page 2)

AsCe fort Worth Branch treasurer’s report november 2007

the fort Worth Branch of AsCe is pleased to announce that as of the start of our 2007-2008 fiscal year, we received a big boost in our finances from the 2007 texas section meeting held in fort Worth in october! our Branch was responsible for organizing the event and handling all of the finances. this was a large undertaking and involved months of planning. We are currently attempting to reconcile the books and finish tying up the loose ends. in summary, the meeting resulted in approximately $120,000 in gross income with approximately $90,000 in expenses. this will hopefully yield an approximate $30,000 profit! the profits from the section meetings are divided between the section and the Branch. the texas section receives 50%, the Branch receives 37.5%, and the remaining 12.5% goes to the section’s Branch General fund. the texas section also receives $10,000 in support as a budget item for the meeting. these meeting are tremendous revenue generators to help support our parent texas section. our account has fluctuated considerably due to the meeting, but we will likely receive over $10,000 from the section meeting boosting our account to approximately $35,000. thanks to all the planners, sponsors, exhibitors, and attendees. We have heard great things from this meeting and we hope everyone enjoyed it!

Gary WilliamsFort Worth Branch Treasurer, M. ASCE

(continued from Page 1) an outstanding job last year on the treasurer duties as he had to manage many large transactions involving both the joint meeting with the dallas Branch and the texas section meeting in fort Worth. he is passing the treasurer reigns on to Gary Williams, who i know will also do a fantastic job. our directors, who will assist these guys this year, are Jennifer Butcher, Jay sappington, and Carl Krogness.

sanford lahue is our outgoing section director, whose service has been tremendous to the Branch. ronda Visintainer is our incoming section director and has already attended her first section Board meeting. John Wier continues to serve as our historical chair.

for public relations, Josh Brockett is taking over the helm. Jay sappington continues to run a great web-site and shelly hattan is our email coordinator and stays busy sending out meeting reminders to the Branch. sam hinojosa is the special meetings Coordinator, landis Grimmett is meeting set-up, steve mcCullough is our hospitality chair, and leah hermes is in charge of Continuing education this year.

travis Attanasio is our new membership chair. he will also be attending the Younger member leadership forum for regions 3, 6, and 7 in Austin, texas, in January. J.t. Auldridge is the Younger member chair, and he has many activities and happy hours planned for the year. mandy Clark will serve as the engineers in Government chair, and devon tiner and Brandon long are our UtA practitioner Advisors for this year.

i would like to wrap up this letter by acknowledging roxanne pillar, who is our past-president this year. she did an exceptional job last year coordinating the Branch activities and keeping us all in line. she always put forth a great effort, was very thoughtful of Branch members, and was a true leader. We appreciate everything she has done for the Branch.

We are looking forward to a great 2007-2008, and we hope you can help AdVAnCe the BrAnCh, too!

fall 2007 texas section AsCe meeting summary

the texas section holds semiannual conferences at different cities around the state in the spring and the fall. the fall 2007 meeting was granted to fort Worth. the last section meeting in fort Worth was held in 2002 in Arlington. for the 2007 meeting, the host committee really wanted to give the state a taste of fort Worth. We started the planning two years before the conference. We looked at locations in downtown fort Worth, but found the ideal location in north fort Worth at the doral tesoro hotel. the next step in the planning was to decide on a theme for the event. Being located near the texas motor speedway, the host committee decided to have a nAsCAr theme with the slogan “Civil engineering in the fast lane”.

thanks to all the hard work of our planners, volunteers and members, the meeting was a tremendous success! We had over 400 attendees, with 30 exhibitors, 14 Continuing professional Cevelopment (Cpd) seminars and numerous technical presentations. these were all above and beyond the normal numbers for a texas section meeting.

the meeting started on Wednesday october 3rd with a meet and greet for the state Board of direction, texas section officers and early arriving guests on the hotel back patio by the Championship Golf Course. many engineers from around the state showed up on thursday for the wide array of Cpd seminars. the icebreaker was held in the exhibitor area on thursday evening and the Wonder Bread Car from ricky Bobby was rolled out for display (shake and Bake!). friday topped off the conference with over 50 technical presentations in all fields of civil engineering. At the friday Awards luncheon the new slate of state officers were installed and all of the texas section Awards were awarded to fort Worth AsCe members and UtA Graduates (Whooop!). sanford lahue received the professional service Award. John Wier received the history and heritage Award. (see below) scott Berman received the service to people Award, and Coy Veach received the John focht Jr. Citizen engineer Award. those who attended the friday night entertainment were treated to a tour of texas motor speedway with pace car rides around the track at 100+mph and then a nice dinner at the speedway Club overlooking the track.

the texas section meeting was a great revenue generator for the texas section and our Branch. thanks to all the planners, sponsors, exhibitors, and attendees. We have heard great things from this meeting and we hope everyone enjoyed it!

society of Civil engineers.

for his “special contributions made to recording and/or recognizing the history and heritage of civil engineering in texas”, mr. Wier was presented the texas section “history & heritage Award” recently at the fall 2007 meeting of the texas section AsCe held in fort Worth.
