Gordon powers Miracle in back-and-forth battle with TugasMiracle shortstop Nick Gordon swatted his first Florida State League home run and drove in three in Fort Myers’ 6-5 extra inning win over the Daytona Tortugas on Friday night at Jackie Robinson Ballpark. Down 4-1 going into the sixth, the Miracle received an RBI triple from Logan Wade and a run-scoring ground out by Brian Navarreto to pull within one run. In the seventh, Alex Swim led off with a double and Gordon followed by slicing an opposite field line drive over the wall in left for a two-run jack. Gordon’s first home run gave the Miracle a brief 5-4 lead. In the ninth, Daytona tied the game on a two-out RBI single from Aristides Aquino off Yorman Landa. Gordon re-ignited the Miracle offense in the top of the tenth with a lead-off double. Trey Vavra followed with a double of his own into left center and Gordon scored the eventual game-winning run. Trevor Hildenberger stranded the tying run at third base to record his third save of the season.

Gordon off to blistering start as 20-year old in the FSLThe Twins first pick and fifth overall in 2015, shortstop Nick Gordon has ad-justed beautifully to the Florida State League in his first taste at age 20. Cur-rently third in the league with a .400 batting average, Gordon is 14-for-35 with six extra-base hits and four RBI. His 14 hits and five doubles lead the FSL coming into today’s action and Nick now has multiple hits in three of his last five games. A Florida native, Gordon has put on a display in his home state to begin the season. Nick’s father, former MLB reliever Tom ‘Flash’ Gordon and brother, current Marlins All-Star, Dee Gordon are also based in Florida for the summer.

Vavra streaking to begin 2016 with hits in eight straightLast year, Miracle infielder Tanner Vavra’s longest hitting streak was six games. His brother, Trey, now has bragging rights after opening the season with an eight-game streak for the Miracle. Vavra is 9-for-31 (.290) with two doubles during his current stretch and recorded his first multi-hit game of the season on Friday in Daytona. Last year, Trey opened the season with a five-game hitting streak for Cedar Rapids and he has already eclipsed his 2015-best six-game streak for the Kernels.Vavra hit .346 in 42 games in the Midwest League a year ago.

Vielma injury in Double-A causes trickle down effectOn Wednesday, Chattanooga Lookouts shortstop Engelb Vielma suffered a hamstring injury that forced him to be put on the disabled list. As a result, the Miracle received the first roster transaction of the 2016 season with T.J. White getting the call-up to Double-A. White had recorded multiple hits in three of the last four games and was 6-for-22 with two RBI in six games for the Miracle. Filling White’s spot on the Fort Myers roster will be infielder Chris Paul. A sixth round pick by the Twins last year out of the University of California-Berkeley, Paul got off to a great start with Cedar Rapids (A) in the Midwest League. Making six of seven starts at third base, Paul was 9-for-26 (.346) for the Kernels with two extra-base hits and four RBI. Manuel Guzman goes from Extended Spring Training to Cedar Rapids to fill in for Paul.
