• Binary molecular compounds are named using Greek prefixes. Here are the prefixes you will need to know:

Naming Binary Molecular Compounds

1 Mono 6 Hexa

2 Di 7 Hepta

3 Tri 8 Octa

4 Tetra 9 Nona

5 Penta 10 Deca

• The first element in the formula is named first, and the full element name is used.

• The second element is named by dropping the ending and adding -ide.

• Prefixes are used to denote the number of atoms present.• The prefix mono- is never used for naming the first

element. For example, CO is called carbon monoxide, not monocarbon monoxide.

• If the element name begins with a vowel, the vowel is typically dropped from the prefix name. For example CO4 would be called carbon tetroxide, not carbon tetraoxide.
