Since leaving Cuba in 1947, I lived in Turkey for two years, after which I went to school in the US, at Phillips Academy (Andover), Amherst College and Harvard Business School. In 1959 I moved to Brazil, living first in Rio, and then moving to Sao Paulo in 1961. I had a really magical marriage during 39 years, but recently became a widower, after which I moved to London for a year to pursue my interest in art and antiques, taking a course in history of Western art at Christie's. I have travelled extensively exhibiting my collections in museums around the world, and hope to continue to be able to do so in the future, but still plan to be based in Brazil. I was only there for what we now call Junior Kindergarten in Ontario. I remember my teacher a little bit, that she was very nice. I was only 4 years old. All the classes were entirely in Spanish. Since 2004 I have visited Havana several times and have seen the Ruston site which is now some sort of military installation. We lived very nearby in La Coronela in a house my father designed.

I married Noah Horowitz in 1961, we have 3 children - our elder son is a lawyer, our daughter is an ecologist, and our younger son (the only married one) is a computer network engineer. We have 4 grandchildren, the oldest almost 18 and the youngest going on 6. We lived in Israel from 1972 to 1989, returned to the US, and then came back to Israel in 2007. Although I only attended Ruston for one academic year (1959-60) (Lafayette for the previous three…), I have many wonderful memories. We evacuated Cuba in September 1960, later than most Americans as my family had adopted an eight month old baby boy only a few months earlier, and we couldn't get him out right away!! We went to Miami Beach, and my dad stayed in Cuba to try to keep his business from being confiscated. He was recruited by the CIA, and was on-island when the Bay of Pigs occurred.. escaped on a fishing boat, chased by a Russian gun boat… Eventually left, disenchanted with the government..After Cuba, my family spent some time in Ecuador and Mexico, and since high school, I've been predominantly stateside. Married, living in San Diego, have a daughter, now 23, whom we adopted from Russia when she was six. Still in practice as a clinical psychologist. Life has been good.. hard to believe how many, many years it's been since the idyllic days of Cuba. Have connected with a few Rustonians over the past month, and it's been a blast! I was a member of the Class of 1960, but I graduated from The Hill School in Pottstown, PA, went to Harvard, and then enlisted in the Marines. In 1965, with a view to making my way back to Cuba, I became a foreign correspondent and (one-man) bureau manager for UPI in Panama and Central America. Then, called back into the Marine Corps Reserve in 1967, I joined CBS News as a reporter in New York and became head of the international news operation. I am now, all these many years later, a producer of investigative documentaries, for the most part with the BBC as my partner. My wife Penny and I met at a party in Cleveland in 1963, we got married in 1966, and we have two children, Jonathan, 30, a reporterfor Reuters in New York, and Audrey, 25, the assistant photo editor of Rolling Stone. Penny is an artist and an art teacher, and she has never been to Cuba, but she'll go someday soon. We all will. Enough is enough. I have remarkably vivid memories of the Class of 1960, and I'd like to see all of you again,one by one.

Eulogy: Florida Sea Base Coral Reef Captain Tim Mahoney lost his battle with lung cancer overnight. I was honored to have his lovely bride, Susan Mahoney, serve as the Program Office Manager for two summers. I was always impressed with Captain Tim’s quiet, yet very noticeable, presence. If you sailed with Captain Tim aboard S/V Flamingo I know you had an experience of a lifetime.Florida Sea Base News, posted Feb 8, 2015 Captain Ed Marill, S/V Siesta, was a childhood friend of Captain Tim and posted the following on Facebook this morning.Sad news. My good friend Tim Mahoney passed away this morning.This is the message I just sent to the Boy Scout of America’s sailing staff in Islamorada:Tim Mahoney had been very ill with lung cancer at his home in Port Charlotte for the last few months. He leaves behind his wife Susan, a daughter Emma, and a son Flynn.I became friends with Tim when he was my classmate in Cuba, starting in third grade at Ruston Academy, in Havana. We have stayed in touch over many years, and we sailed together aboard SIESTA in San Francisco Bay.After he lived in Cuba, he and his parents lived in Argentina, among other places. Tim has had a love affair with sailboats since very young. He built several sailboats himself, and owned other very fast racing sailboats in the Bay Area.When Tim and his wife, Susan, retired and sold their very successful wood flooring business in the Bay Area, they commissioned the building of a beautiful luxury 46′ catamaran in South Africa. They sailed their brand-new boat across the south Atlantic to South Florida. After a successful boat show in Miami, where they sold a sistership, they sailed over to Marathon, and spent a couple of months at our dock with us. We had a wonderful time together. We had some unforgettable sails aboard their cat.They learned about my work with Seabase, and expressed interest. Rich came down to meet them and see their catamaran boat, FLAMINGO, at our dock. Tim and Susan decided to pursue the SeaBase opportunity.Subsequently, they sold their catamaran in exchange for some cash plus a beautiful waterfront house in Port Charlotte, purchased their Whitby 42′, and both joined Florida Seabase three years ago.His boat, FLAMINGO, was sold just a few weeks ago.Tim was a man of few words, strong but a bit shy. And as a friend, second to none. I will miss him.Below is the sad text message I received from Susan this morning:“Tim died early this morning very peacefully. I was with him. Hospice was beyond wonderful! I had them dress him in his FSB shorts and shirt. They have taken him to be cremated. We don’t have plans for a service/memorial yet. I go by Liana now, name with which I was baptised, though everyone called me Lynn. No longer living in Tucson, moved to San Diego in 2007. One daughter lives in SD (with my grandboys!) and the other now lives in Alaska. Que frio! My mom died in 2002, so it's just me now. Business has been slow here, but I love living in SD. After college I kept my interest in Latin America alive with the Peace Corps in Colombia, later as a film maker made a film in the rainforest of Costa Rica. After leaving Havana rather hastily in the middle of the night in March of 1960, via U.S. Embassy motorcade and then chartered plane, my sister, Rosemary, and I landed in New Orleans and were sent to the Red Cross until relatives were located. Finally, reunited with our family in August. Graduated from Coral Gables High and then attended University of Miami 1 year. Graduated from PepperdineUniversity many years later. My brother, Eddie, was killed in action in Vietnam on March 18, 1969. Attended 7th and 8th grade Jan 1959 (arrived in Havana when Fidel did) through 1959-1960 school year. Left early summer 1960 with my mother and older brother Garth, who also attended Ruston. In Aug 1960 my father's company, Cubana de Cemento Portland (the $24 M cement plant in Mariel), was taken from him at gunpoint and he was given 24 hours to leave the country. My brother and I ended up at Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania in Fall 1960. Very fond memories of Ruston and Cuba… I ended up as an engineer working on advanced technology systems including the space station, shuttle missions, Mars rovers, and astronaut training. The Ruston education definitely was a factor in my future success.

My freshman year at Ruston was certainly one of the happiest of my life. Such wonderful memories! I am Danish and my family went back to Denmark in 1959. They owned several stores in Havana ("The Danish House"). I came to the US in 1961 and have been here ever since. I married here, have two children, and taught Spanish for 30 years at the University of Akron. Jim (who also taught at the same university) and I retired to 35 acres in the mountains west of Colorado Springs. We divide our time between traveling abroad and enjoying the view from our house.

I was a second or third generation Rustonian. My aunt Maria, class of 1936; my uncle Rosendo, class of 1937; my aunt Valentina, class of 1938; and my father Rafael, class of 1940 have all passed away. My mother Gloria Capablanca, class of 1941 is in good health and lives in Coral Gables. My grandfather Rafael was both a friend of Mr. Ruston and Mr. Baker, he was involved with the Ruston-Baker Foundation since its begining.I started Kindergarten at Quinta and attended thru to fisrt month of 6th grade at Alturas del Country Club. My classmates father, Jaime Canaves was the Contractor for the new school. Remember Sra. Nina's famous "jaqueca", the bus ride with Gladys Sastre and Sra. Although I attended high school at the Dominicas Americanas in La Coronela, Ruston Academy holds a treasured place in my heart. It taught me principles, caring, friendship, English...and most of all, the pride of being a Cuban and of being a Rustonian. I just found this website and was delighted to see so many names I recognize. I still name Ruston teachers as some of the best I ever had in my life: Uncle Boris (Goldenberg), who called many of us "mon petite chou;" Mr. Neuendorf from whom I inherited an undying love for the Kingston Trio; and Mrs. Ferrer, who was the only math teacher who could explain things to me 6 different ways until I finally got it! I also remember Mrs. Harper as my third grade teacher at Cathedral School. Since we left Havana in 1960, I graduated from high school in Pennsylvania, college from the University of Florida, and got my masters at the University of Colorado. I vividly remember the day that all of the old textbooks were removed and replaced with ones deemed to be more suitable to the new regime. My twin sister and I just ADORED Rocky Harper--'causehe used to come visit the little Americanos and carry us around on his shoulders. We left Havana in a convoy with other Americans to Jose Marti Airport (17 suitcases!) always hoping that we'd be returning.

Left Cuba after graduation in 1955, two years of college in Buffalo, New York. Went to Washington, D.C., where my father had been transferred (State Dept) after Castro, had one year of secretarial school and worked various positions in DC, culminating in the Executive Offices of the President during the Kennedy and Johnson administrations. Married Joe Chambers (USMC, Medal of Honor) in 1965 and picked up five stepchildren (2 older than I). Joe died in 1982, and I stayed in our home in Rockville, Maryland, until I married Bob Skinner in 1986. In 2002 we pulled up stakes and moved to Gorham, Maine. Bob's grandfather had been governor of Maine in the 1920s, so it seemed a natural progression. 04/03/2013 Guess I'll never really retire. As they say,keep moving or they start throwing dirt on you. Joan and I now have 6 grandkids. 4 girls and 2 boys. Still painting and golfing. Do a lot of traveling. Winters are starting to get me thinking about moving south. Love to hear from old friends.

Semi-retired, but my consultanting business continues to thrive. Now have 5 grankids 4 girls and a boy. My three daughters live in Tennessee, Georgia, and Boston so I don't get to see them as often I would like. Was at Ruston from the earliest grade in the old Vedado building thru six grade. My Dad died in Cuba in '59 & brother John (Columbus School), mother and I moved to Beirut. John & I graduated from Westtown (Quaker) School in PA. I got a degree in Estudios Hispanicos/Univ. de Barcelona, then college in USA (Lake Erie in Ohio) and masters in clinical social work from Smith College. Was married 10 years to David Beres and we have a 23 y.o. son Plinio, now married, graduate of Northland College, and living in Wisconsin. Divorced David after 10 years. Fell in love with fellow grad student Marilyn (Maril) Collins in 1983 and we have been living in a committed relationship in LongIsland since 1989. Have added a daughter, son, and two beautiful grandchildren thru Maril.Professions have included teaching college Spanish language and literature and working in hospitals, the last 10 years on AIDS Team at county hospital. After the "revolution," we returned to Great Neck at the end of February 1959, and I graduated from Great Neck North High School in 1960. I have fond memories of Cuba, especially my wonderful experience at Ruston, and I believe this brief departure from a conventional US education earned me admission to Harvard, where I attended college and graduate school, earning a Ph. D. in physics.
