If indications at (be meet- ing Tuesday nyht arc followed through, the iiuestion of spending more than $10,000 for tne ciiool will be put before the voters. WilLum C. Collins pointed out the school needed a new heating system and if the board intended going through with fire-proofing the school a new system should be provided, also. The repair committee was or- dered to investigite that matter, also. Thomas Fahy, chairman of the Franklin\School, brought up the mat- ter. "That school ia a fire trap," Fahy declared, ‘‘and I, a cha rman, refuse to take the responsibility of the life of one of those children. The cost of putting in tte fire-proof corridor* might be objected to, buj. it is small compared to the terrible consequences we would suffer if one child was k,lled in a fire because of our negligence.’' Owen S. Whitman brought out the fart the 'board had discussed the sub ject la-1 year and had prepared tr do the work necessary for the firr proofing of the school. Citizens ob- jected so wildly,” he said, “the Itoaril decided not to go ahead with the ac- tion. 1 think that the work is neces- sary.” “If it is necessary," Fahy said, “1 am in favor of putting the question before the voters. If they turn it down, the responsibility, at least, will be off our shoulders. I believe that we should go ahead w th plans at once.” President Joseph I'awloski pointed out the school had teen condemned by the State Hoard ai^il IS. C. We should not be too hasty In breaking the ruling of the last board. Surely Wolf km w how much he was to get awl was old enough tu know what lie was doing.” Collins' motion was seconded by Fahy and was passed when it was put up to a vote. SHOW B IG G EST E V E R

With an over-flow crowd of mure than 1,000 packed in every available gectiou of the Lyndhurst Theatie, the Chamber of Commerce boxing bouts, held la t Friday to raise money for the Chamber’s milk fund, were pronounced more successful than the first show of laat year and ia seen as an ndication of continued success fur the affair. f .

Local boys participated in many of the bouts arVd most of them won. Joey Kulo, local bantamweight—Wob O’Neill, motorcycle policeman—Barney THytgari, a .featherweight—and l’etey koa«i , a lightwaight iigurcd in the victories, ^

Bigger and tietter in every way, the (.how raised a considerable sum for the fuud and was a true indication of the work the arrangement committee did. Joseph Majuachuk, preside!'', and first chairman of the show; Arnold DeMassi, chairman this year, and Frank A. Schneider, vice president of the Chamber and treasurer of the committee, were prai ed for their part in the success of th'' show.

<rtme Krrrmm, Paterson referee, called one of the best in the country, refereed the b o u ts . Jimmy Marsh, local boxing mrnager, assisted the committee in arranging tiie bouts and wa thanked for his efforts.

The ix round bout between Eulo and Tommy Abobo of South Amvrio was the feature affair of the card am proved <o be the most exciting fight.

Leading all the way, Kulo piled up a:i early lead, planting; hard punches all over Abobo’s body. The dark- skinned South American, however, showed no signs of distress and took everything and was back for more when the final bell rang. The crowd acclaimed Kulo at the end of the bout.

•Fire-proofing of th e Franklint rhool—starnpi d a fire trap by

oartls of Education a half score of years and by the State Board of Education la t year—was discussed by the Board nf Etlucation Tuesday right with the result the repair committee was instructed to secure plans for the work. If indications at (be meeting Tuesday nyht arc followed through, the iiuestion of spending more than $10,000 for tne ciiool will be put before the voters.

WilLum C. Collins pointed out the school needed a new heating system and if the board intended going through with fire-proofing the school a new system should be provided, also. The repair committee was ordered to investigite that matter, also.

Thomas Fahy, chairman of the Franklin\School, brought up the matter. "That school ia a fire trap," Fahy declared, ‘‘and I, a cha rman, refuse to take the responsibility of the life of one of those children. The cost of putting in tte fire-proof corridor* might be objected to, buj. it is small compared to the terrible consequences we would suffer if one child was k,lled in a fire because of our negligence.’'

Owen S. Whitman brought out the fart the 'board had discussed the sub ject la-1 year and had prepared tr do the work necessary for the firr proofing of the school. Citizens objected so wildly,” he said, “the Itoaril decided not to go ahead with the action. 1 think that the work is necessary.”

“ I f it is necessary," Fahy said, “1 am in favor of putting the question before the voters. If they turn it down, the responsibility, at least, will be off our shoulders. I believe that we should go ahead w th plans at once.”

President Joseph I'awloski pointed out the school had teen condemned b y the State Hoard ai il IS. C. An increase of tSDO n salary wws granted to tius Wolf, an a sistant janitor in the high school by the board over the protest of Jalo- S.- Lrliti. With Joseph I’ollara absent the vote that reversed a ruling of the previous board was 7 to I. PawkuM also objected to the increase liut voted for it wilh the motion whe'h was made by Collins.

Wolf waa employed Ust winter at | l JM » Ve ir. ihe man he succeeded had received *1,700. Chaile Radge r« said it was unfair to give a man who hail taken the place of a janitor receiving $1,700 only *1,200. He «ikl a conlprom s i should have been made

When il was brought out the board has no definite ba.iis for starting jani tors, Collins said he had l>een under the impression $1,200 was tlw tail- ing salary of janitors as it is for teachers. Ue said he h^d thought that when lie » •* » member o f the board last viar and had voted for the $1,200 salaiy.

I’awloski attacked the suggestion of giving Wolf au increase. "If the money wa coming from out of my own pockets," he said, “we would never think nf paying a man $1,400 when we can get him for $1,200. We should not be too hasty In breaking the ruling of the last board. Surely Wolf km w how much he was to get awl was old enough tu know what lie was doing.”

Collins' motion was seconded by Fahy and was passed when it was put up to a vote.

THE WATER DEFICIT AGAINW c have recdvcd an interesting communication from Mr.

Carmine Savino, who writes relative ta our editorial of last week on the water department deficit. The following is the letter:

Editor the Commercial Leader,Dear Sir:

Permit me .to express my appreciation of your resolve to discuss editorially pu blic local questions.

However your explanation of the water deficit in the last issue must not be considered conclusive because it is based on the assumption that water is sckl to the consumer for less than it costs? * .■ .

Water is not sold for less than it costs. The consumer whocan also be termed the taxpayer pays 35% more than it costs the town and that is. the reason why I've asked timc without number for a report on the business of the water department.

Each time the issue has been confused by some one asking an obvious question and the Commissioners have answered in exactly the same manner employed by the Commercial Loader in its last issue.

/ act m;,ttcr >s: 1 would never question thedeficit if it was incurred in anyway advantageous to the consumer And taxpayer.

I ask again to give us a lull report of the business of thewater department, a business like report, the same kind of areport that would have tt> be given to a Board of Directors of any business entailing the annual turnover of cur water department, trying to justify the deficit by telling us that it is done for the purpose of placing some of the cost on the vacant property owners, is to put it charitably a very poor excuse, as any one nan see that the consumer is the largest taxpayer and therefore besides paying a profit on the water he uses he must also defray most of the deficit.

If our town fathers had been diligent in their duty they would have conducted the business of the water department as it ,vas originally started including installations. Then, they would lot have to resort to the doubtful subterfuge of a deficit to place he cost equally on all property twncrs. *

CARMINE SAVINO.'

Mr. Savino's letter starts out to question the conclusion of our editorial. It ends up by making its dominant note the request fcr a report.

Mr. Savino’s request has merit and deserves attention. A report, such as he asks should be available. We believe in the present system, as being a benefit to local home owners, and any truthful report will only help to make this benefit more apparent.

When Mr. Savino says that water is not sold for less than it costs, he is a little technical, and means, the actual cost of water only. Our statement as to the cost naturally includes the cost of water, together with the coat of administration and main* tainance. The cost to the consumer for water, administration and maintainance must be less, or otherwise there would' be no *20,<X)0 deficit.

By all means let us see a report on this one department. No change should be advocated, nor can any one properly defend the present system, unkss all of the facts are known.

A S S E M B L Y M A N ELLIO T SPE A K SAssemblyman Jason Elliot, who was elected on an anti-

Chandless ticket last year, has iust given a statement to the pres*- assailing Chairman Thomson. The Assemblyman lives in the same town as the Chairman and he says that Thomson "asks for fair play, and indulges in double dealing. He said that he pretend* friendship and forgets it when expedient” and "lacks the qualities of decision, determination and loyalty necessary to a party

.leader,". . , ^ ----- „ — -— -----------------What the assemblyman has said has been in the minds of

many. Mr. Elliot proved a resourceful and energetic legislator his first year and has made a name for himself in Bergen County.

The two majority on the Board of Regents, supposed to rylc the Republican Party arc Thomson and Pomeroy, both of Englewood, Their leadership has plunged the party into con fusion that, if it lasts, will greatly threaten the party* future success.
