What is a Resume?
A resume is your personal
marketing tool. It is not a one-size-
fits-all document.
Writing a resume is an on-going
process. Continually update it
throughout your career.
It concisely outlines your
educational background,
experience, skills, and training as
they relate to how you may
contribute to the organization.
It communicates what makes you
stand out from other applicants to
potential employers or universities.
Include high school involvement
when college activities and
experiences are limited or when
they are related to your career
goals.

Resume Construction Tips & Resources
7/2017
There are 3 traditional resume formats:
Chronological, Functional & Curriculum Vitae (CV).
Chronological
Most widely used and typically best suited for
undergraduate and graduate students, as well
as recent alumni
Arranges information in reverse chronological
order (most current first)
Highlights timeframe in which experiences,
education, and achievement occurred
Functional
Tends to be best suited for more experienced
students and alumni, frequent job changers,
or those moving into a different industry
Groups similar information together to stress
proficiencies and specializations
Highlights experiences & skill sets
Curriculum Vitae (CV)
Best suited for those pursuing scholarly
positions in academic research or teaching
Format varies according to discipline as each
one will place emphasis on what is most
important or unique in the field
Highlights teaching, research, & publications
