Small Businesses Share 5 Common Mistakes; Too Much EgoContinued from the February newsletterReprinted from the National Post 2007 (Vancouver)

Mistake #4Too close for comfort. You may be great at making widgets or wooden chairs, but your primary job is marketing and the development of the business, says Aly Karmali, regional advisor for RBC Small Business.“You need to know your competition and work on the business rather than in the business. A clear sales and marketing strategy is key. Focus on your marketing strengths and identify your challenges and react accordingly. Surround yourself wit the right people and network, network, network at every opportunity.”

Mistake #5Failure to get it in writing. A common mistake is not getting information in writing, says Laura Jones, Western Canada vice-president for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business. We’ve had members suffer huge provincial sales tax and other audits because they were following bad advice from the government. Without something in writing to back you up, it becomes a he-said, she-said situation. With tax audits, guess who usually wins?”

Whether it is tax advice from the government, disciplining employees, or dealing with suppliers – get it in writing.
