What is Form 16 and Form 12BAForm 16

“Form 16 is the TDS certificate that an employer issues to employee when TDS is deducted.”

Form 12BA“When an employee receives perquisites* from his job, Form 12BA is provided by

his employer to the employee”

*Perquisites are the benefits derived from a job or a position and these are in addition to salary already being paid to the employee.”


Form 16 - Part A and Part BWhat is Part A?

“Part A has TAN of the employer & PAN details of both the employer and employee.”

Part A also has summary of tax deducted from your income and deposited to the government as per the quarterly TDS return filed by the employer.

What is Part B?“Part B is an important part of your Form 16 since it has a consolidated detail of salary paid to you

during the year, the breakup of your salary as well as detail of deduction claimed by you under section 80 of the income tax act is mentioned. ”


Is it mandatory for the employer to issue you a Form 16?

TDS certificate in Form 16 is only required to be issued to the employee when TDS has been deducted.

The Act further stipulates that the employer should issue the forms by 31 May after the end of the relevant financial year in which the income was paid and tax

deducted.
