    CALL TO WORSHIP

Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord. Lord, hearour voice! Let your ears be attentive to our call. If

you, O Lord, should mark iniquities, Lord, who

could stand? But there is forgiveness with you, so

that you may be revered. I wait for the Lord, my

soul waits, and in his word I hope; We wait for the

Lord. We hope in his word. My soul waits for the

Lord more than those who watch for the morning.O people of God, hope in the Lord! For with the

Lord there is steadfast love, and with him is great

power to redeem. --Adapted from Psalm 130.

seen by men Truly I say to you,

they have their reward in full.Matthew 6:5

The Parable of the Unmerciful Servant -

    Matthew 18:21-35

Then Peter came to Jesus and

    asked, Lord, how many times

shall I forgive my brother or sister

who sins against me? Up to

seven times? 22 Jesusanswered, I tell you, not seven

    times, but seventy-seven times.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    18/86

    23 Therefore, the kingdom of

heaven is like a king who wanted

    to settle accounts with his

servants. 24 As he began thesettlement, a man who owed him

ten thousand bags of gold was

    brought to him.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    19/86

25 Since he was not able to pay,

the master ordered that he and

his wife and his children and all

that he had be sold to repay thedebt. 26 At this the servant fell

on his knees before him. Be

patient with me, he begged, andI will pay back everything.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    20/86

28 But when that servant went out,

he found one of his fellow servants

who owed him a hundred silver

coins. He grabbed him and began to

choke him. Pay back what you oweme! he demanded. 29 His fellow

servant fell to his knees and begged

him, Be patient with me, and I willpay it back.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    21/86

30 But he refused. Instead, he

went off and had the man thrown

into prison until he could pay the

debt. 31 When the other servantssaw what had happened, they

were outraged and went and told

    their master everything that hadhappened.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    22/86

32 Then the master called the

    servant in. You wicked servant,

he said, I canceled all that debt

of yours because you begged meto. 33 Shouldnt you have had

mercy on your fellow servant just

    as I had on you?

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    23/86

34 In anger his master handed

him over to the jailers to be

tortured, until he should pay back

all he owed. 35 This is how myheavenly Father will treat each of

    you unless you forgive your

brother or sister from your heart."

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    24/86

    These two passagepoint out the

    absolute necessityof forgiveness.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    25/86

First we need to tryand understand

what forgiveness isand what it is not.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    26/86

    Forgiveness isbearing the

    consequences ofothers actions

    without seeking tomake them pay.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    27/86

    In other wordsforgiveness is not

    seeking revenge.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    28/86

    Forgiveness isleaving the deeds of

    the past in the past.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    29/86

    Forgiveness is drivingbitterness towards

others for what theyhave or we perceive

they have done towardsus out of our hearts.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    30/86

Forgiveness is based onour first being forgiven

    by God.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    31/86

Forgiveness is not arestoration of a

    relationship.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    32/86

Many times people feelthat they must restore a

relationship in order tohave fully forgiven.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    33/86

Forgiveness is the first step in

restoration of relationships buta relationship is two sided and

    unless the other person is

    willing to be restored and

    meet the conditions of

    restoration (repentance andtransformation) forgiveness

will not force them to do so.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    34/86

    With that same thought in

    mind forgiveness is not

    allowing a person to endlessly

abuse us simply by sayingthey are sorry.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    35/86

    An invited guest who steals

    from your home may be

    forgiven but never again

asked to visit your home untilthey have truly changed their

    ways.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    36/86

Forgiveness is not meant to be a

    cover for wrong actions. If

    criminal activity is involved even

if we forgive there needs to be arecognition of the wrong done

    and consequences for the wrong

for the safety of others and thehope of change in the offender.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    37/86

    In these cases forgiveness is

more about the motives of our

heart rather than a letting go of

consequences. The purpose ofthe consequences is for good

    and not for payment or

    revenge.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    38/86

It is important to know that God

does not just love us..... He loves

    everyone. Here lies one reason

He desires to forgive and for usto forgive.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    39/86

    Forgiveness

    sets those Godloves free.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    40/86

It is for freedom that Christhas set us free. Stand firm,

    then, and do not let

yourselves be burdenedagain by a yoke of slavery.

    Galatians 5:1

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    41/86

It sets us free in several ways.

    My list may not be

    comprehensive but it reflects my

    personal journey intoforgiveness.

John 20:23 "If you forgive the

sins of any, their sins have

    been forgiven them; if you

retain the sins of any, theyhave been retained.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    44/86

    What an incredible power for

    good or destruction we have

    been given in forgiveness. We

can forgive or we can bindthem with unforgiveness and

send them into a prison. It is

    in our power.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    45/86

    Perhaps the most powerful

story in the bible about the

    power of forgiveness is the

prodigal son being welcomedback to his home by a father

    who has been daily looking

for him with forgiveness in his

    heart.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    46/86

    Had his father turned him

    away his life would have

    never been restored.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    47/86

    Forgiveness makes a way for

    others to make terrible

    mistakes and yet come back

from them to be restored andlive in a positive way.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    48/86

The Bible is full of stories of

people just like you and me,

who made a terrible mess of

their lives but because of theforgiveness of God and others

    turned their lives around to

    become men and women of

    honor.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    49/86

    Without forgiveness it would

    have been impossible for

    them to have done so.

We are placed in aprison of torment

until we forgive aswe have been

    forgiven.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    53/86

C.S. Lewis once saidthat forgiveness is more

about our hearts beingset free than it is about

    the one who wrongedus.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    54/86

How true this is. Whenwe refuse to forgive we

are tormented. We arebound in fetters of pain,

    bitterness and self-pity.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    55/86

If we think about it for amoment we will all

remember a time whenwe saw the fruit of

unforgiveness either inour own, or in others

    lives.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

Something dies insideus when we will not put

    In a strangeentanglement of

become like and act insimilar ways as those

    we do not forgive.

    that forgiveness sets free is

    God.

  • 8/8/2019 Forgive Us Our Sins Nov 14 2010 Talbotville & Yarmouth

    That may seem like a

wrong thing to say. God is

    God keeps His Word. We

There is no other way of
