ForewordJonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi in Britain, gave a lecture, “How faith communities
can renew civil society”. He asked his audience to imagine being on the
London Eye, looking at all the buildings in view, and asking “What goes on in
there?” (Cited in “The Tablet” 14 Feb. 09). Amongst the buildings would be
Churches, Mosques, Synagogues, Temples, and Gurdwara. What happens
in these, and what they have in common, is the sharing of spiritual treasures,
bonding and building up communities,
and inspiring people to serve their
neighbours. No city or town is
healthy without them.
Northampton Inter Faith
Forum (NIFF) was
formally launched in
2006 for the mutual
encouragement
of individual faith
communities, and
to work for better
understanding between
members of different
faiths. NIFF includes
representatives of
the following faiths: Baha’i, Buddhist,
Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh.
Members of these faiths live throughout the
County of Northamptonshire. Until now there has been no way in which people
of all the different faiths could contact each other across the County. Nor has
there been a resource for others who need to make contact with the various
groups. Now there is. This directory aims to meet the need.
In 2008, through the Department for Communities and Local Government,
funding became available to provide an Inter Faith Development Worker for
NIFF for an 8-month period. This work included the creation of this Inter Faith

Explanatory NotesFaith groups are spread throughout the county. Usually, when there are sufficient numbers present in a particular area, regular formal meetings or a place of worship may be established.
Contact information is provided for the following faith groups:
Baha’i, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim and Sikh.
The contacts listed in this directory are given as a first point of contact; they may refer you to others.
The Christian faith group is diverse and the initial contact point is shown as the relevant Churches Together group. In most cases the contact will be able to direct an enquiry to the most appropriate person.
Local Authority contacts with a relevant community role are also shown.
Directory for the County. NIFF have been pleased to manage this project with
the support of Northamptonshire County Council, Wellingborough Inter Faith
Group, and Faithworks Northampton.
The aim was not to set up another organisation, but to gather together
and organise information about Faith communities, and inter faith groups
throughout the County; and to provide details of key contact people within
these groups.
NIFF believes this will facilitate and encourage inter faith networking both at
local level and county-wide. But the directory will be helpful in other ways.
Public bodies, including Local Authorities, Emergency Services, and other
agencies will find this directory helpful in those many situations where a
person’s or a group’s faith and their roots are of importance; and where faith
groups are significant providers in their communities. Without doubt, this
directory will help promote social cohesion within the County.
We have tried to keep this directory as succinct as possible, but we are aware
that it will be used by people who have limited knowledge of faith groups. All
of us are still learning. Therefore, as well as providing contact details for faith
and inter faith groups, very brief descriptive or explanatory paragraphs are
sometimes added; or suggestions made as to where further information might
be found. Faith forms only one part of what shapes our identity, but we invite
those who use this resource to do so in the knowledge that people of good
faith want to work in partnerships for the common good.
We hope you will find this directory helpful. If you have suggested
amendments, or if you would like further copies, please contact the NIFF
Secretary: Rev Dr Ted Hale; Email: [email protected].
NIFF aims in the near future to produce the information in this directory in
electronic form and to carry it on a NIFF website. We will advertise widely as
soon as this becomes available.

The Inter Faith Network for the UK (IFN) is an inter faith agency recognised and supported by central government: to which central government refers when it needs inter faith advice. It has excellent guidelines on inter faith dialogue and action. As members of IFN, NIFF incorporated these guidelines in their Constitution. Other bodies involved in inter faith work are advised to consult them. IFN are always willing to give advice and help if asked.

“There is increased understanding of the important role that faith communities play in renewing civic society,
and supporting communities to come together in their daily lives. This directory of contacts provides a valuable
resource for us all to use in linking with the key faith groups in Northamptonshire. It will facilitate and encourage
further inter-faith networking within Northamptonshire”.
Katherine Kerswell,Chief Executive, Northamptonshire County Council
“The Department for Communities and Local Government is pleased to support the interfaith directory, it will help public bodies, including local authorities, emergency services and other agencies contact appropriate faith
representatives in situations where effective engagement with communities is important
“Faith groups are best placed to bring communities together. Especially In the current economic climate,
cohesion is more relevant than ever with strong, cohesive communities best placed to ride out the worst of an
economic downturn”.
