Uneven-aged Forest Here, you’ll notice trees of many diferent sizes—and ages. Sugar maple and hemlock often grow this way because they can thrive in the shade of larger trees. Trees like oak require full sunlight as seedlings and grow in even-aged stands.

Plantation Forest Notice that all the trees in this red pine forest are about the same size. That’s because they were all planted in 1964 on an abandoned agricultural feld, making this a plantation forest, or “even-aged” stand. These trees are now 12 inches or more in diameter, large enough to produce lumber.
⊳ Name three wildlife species that make their home in this conifer forest. Answer here.

Poletimber Forest The forest behind this sign began its life cycle with a clear-cut harvest in 1985. These 6- to 12-inch-diameter trees are called “poletimber,” and are good for frewood, still too small for lumber, but growing fast.
⊳ What’s the diference between a “cord” and a “face cord” of frewood? Answer here.

Forest Thinning Notice that, although there are fewer trees to the right than in the uncut area on the left, the trees on the right look healthier and have bigger diameters. That’s because the area on the right has been harvested and thinned regularly, allowing sunlight and growing room for the remaining trees.
⊳ True or False: A tree’s growth rings tell you only how old the tree is. Answer here.

Seedling/Sapling Forest This seedling/sapling forest began its life cycle with a clear-cut harvest in 2005. Clear cutting encourages trees like black cherry, oak and aspen, which need full sun as seedlings. Seedlings and saplings provide excellent habitat for wildlife such as rufed grouse, eastern box turtle and New England cottontail.
⊳ Name the three ways that trees like oak, aspen and beech can sprout. Answer here.
