ABSTRACT

Forest fire statistical records are presented for selected

Canadian provinces and territories, Alaska, Sweden and Finland.

Figures for fire occurrence and area burned are separated by cause

(lightning-caused and man-caused), Record lengths vary but generally

run from the advent of organized suppression to the present time.

FOREWORD

This report presents, in tabular form, forest fire statistics

gathered from Canada, Alaska, Sweden and Finland for use in a paper en

titled "Fire Frequencies During the Suppression Period", which was deliv

ered at the Fire in Circumpolar Ecosystems Conference held in Fredericton,

New Brunswick in October 1979. Space limitations in the Conference

Proceedings precluded the inclusion of these statistics in the paper;

hence, summaries were used. However, it was felt that the publication of

these statistics, which were gleaned from a variety of sources, would be

of interest to forest fire management personnel in the countries involved.

Statistics were limited to those countries, and within Canada, to

those provinces with a large percentage of land area classified as boreal

forest. Therefore, within Canada, statistics are presented for the prov

inces of Newfoundland, Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and

Alberta, as well as for the Northwest and Yukon territories. Nova Scotia,

New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia were not included,

Only a very limited amount of information was available from Russia and, consequently, no statistics from that country are presented.

Countries and provinces separate forest fire statistics by admin

istrative boundaries rather than by forest regions or zones. As a result,

the statistics presented in this report cover each country or province as

a whole and not just that portion of each classified as boreal forest.

Differing record lengths and recording procedures make comparisons between countries or provinces difficult. Early records often did not

separate forest fires by causative agency. In both Sweden and Finland a large number of fires are classified as being of unknown cause and, for

the purposes of this report, are classified as man-caused. Inproved detection capabilities in recent years have resulted in a significant increase in the number of lightning fires reported. In evaluating these statistics the reader should keep in mind that fires are not separated by protection priority zones. (Fire management agencies utilizing these protection zones stratify suppression efforts in order to give greater protection to high-value properties. The result is numerous large fires in low-value areas.)

The following agencies cooperated fully in providing the data included in this report:

United States Department of the Interior, Bureau of Land Management, Alaska State Office

Canada Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development

Alberta Forest Service

Saskatchewan Department of Tourism and Renewable Resources

Manitoba Department of Natural Resources

Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources
