Becoming Che: Guevara’s Second and Final Trip Through Latin America by Carlos “Calica” Ferrer Prologue by Alberto Granado

The mythical figure of Che Guevara continues to fascinate and haunt successive generations in all countries. Who was this man? What made him? Why does he fascinate us? The publication of the book and success of the film The Motorcycle Diaries triggered another wave of interest in Che. But Guevara took two trips through Latin America prior to his departure to Cuba. The second trip and the really deci-sive trip was with his childhood friend Carlos “Calica” Ferrer. When Carlos and Che left each other in Central America, Gue-vara went on to Cuba. Carlos first met Ernesto Guevara at the age of 4 when the Guevara family took their asthmatic son to live in Alta Garcia, Cordoba. They became very close friends, attended school to-gether, played and delved into mischief together. There families were very close. In 1953, just after Guevara completed his medical studies, he and Carlos set off on the second voyage of discovery of Latin America – the decisive trip from which Ernesto was already becoming transformed into the revolutionary ‘Che’. This is an important book about a friendship, about Guevara, about Latin America in the early 1950’s, about adventure and a lasting search for justice.

Rights sold, already, to Germany, Italy, Chile, Romania, Indonesia, Ven-ezuela, Spain. Text available in Spanish and English.

This books has received rave reviews: “…an ideal book for the night-table, the whole year through.” Die Presse “…it is the interesting stories, the incredible and the unheard of that dominate here, which arouses readers’ curiosity and keeps them read-ing” “…not only devout men graced the papal throne, but murderers and sadists, machinators and imbeciles, evil old men and proud fathers too. Entertaining and instructive.”

Empowerment: The Competitive Edge in Sports, Business & Life by Gene N. Landrum, Ph.D. “Insightful, intelligent, informative and entertain-ing….like a good mentor.” “Empowerment is the mother lode of success litera-ture. Landrum dissects the lives of the greatest athletes of all time and shows everybody, from athletes to entre-preneurs, exactly what it takes to develop a competitive spirit…” “Fascinating! A mind-expanding, heart pumping, in-formation-rich joy to read. It inspires you to do the impos-sible.” “A smoothly blended combination of scholarship and biography.” Drawing upon cutting-edge research in brain physiology, kines-thetics and psychology, Gene Landrum explains just how and why certain athletes such as Muhammed Ali, Tiger Woods, Mi-chael Jordan, Pele, Lance Armstrong and others, can achieve excellence and push the barriers of success beyond all expec-tations. He extends this analysis to entrepreneurs and the world of business to de-velop his “13 success principles.” The 13 principles, with a chapter devoted to each one, include: Value Your Dif-ference; To Win Big, Be Willing to Fail Big; Follow Your Passion: Transform Breakdown into Breakthrough; Tap Into Your Instincts; Believe in Yourself; Make ‘em Play Your Game: Visualize your Goal…and more. ‘Empowerment is informed, informative, ‘reader friendly’ and a welcome addi-tion to personal self-help reading lists and community library self-improvement ref-erence shelves.” Gene Landrum is the founder of the Chuck E. Cheese Restaurant chain, with over 400 branches, and the co-founder of Atari Computer. He has reflected on the secrets of success in business, life and living for many decades and is the author of nine books.Rights sold to Korea.Other rights available from Mosaic Press 978-189599-724-8 PB 430 pages

A Mathematical Mosaic: Patterns & Problem Solving by Ravi Vakil New Expanded Edition, 2008. Ravi Vakil is one of the most promising young pure mathematicians around. He is now a full professor at Stanford University, has taught at Princeton and MIT and received his Ph.D. in pure mathematics from Harvard. In high school, he placed first in the USA Mathematical Olym-piad, won numerous medals, wrote a ‘perfect’ paper, went on to win numerous awards and prizes as an undergradu-ate. A Mathematical Mosaic teaches us that math is about beauty, elegance and the discovery of deep and intercon-nected patterns. These patterns of nature are often best understood through puzzles and problems, both easy and difficult. As the author states: “This book should be read bit by bit. Like all mathematics, it should be read with pen-cil in hand, with more time spent in deep thought or frantic scribbling than in actual reading. Mathematics is not a spectator sport!... There is no background required to begin enjoying this book. You should be able to pick up many of the ideas as you go along…” From basic “Number Theory” to “Game Theory”, from “Chessboard Coloring” to “Geometry Revisited”, from “Infinity” to “Concepts in Calculus”, all sixteen sec-tions are broken down into accessible, small chapters, with numerous illustrations, drawings, examples, puzzles and more.

How it all began: Dr. Benjamin M. Nachman, a retired Omaha dentist and long-time Holocaust researcher, ‘discovered’ David Kaufmann while interviewing a survivor for the Steven Spielberg Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation. In 1969, Rabbi Myer S. Kripke, who officiated at the funeral of Mr. David Kaufmann, learned that Mr. Kaufmann was “Mr. Grand Island” and that he had been, throughout his life, a role model for cherished Jewish values and had demon-strated that wealth is truly held only in stewardship. It is deeds, gen-erosity and courage that counts! At last, we now have the story of this exceptional man. David Kaufmann was born in Germany in 1875. He was edu-cated and then began his professional life in merchandising and retail in Berlin, and other cities near Bonn and Cologne. At the age of 28, in 1903, he left Germany for America. He started working at A & S Department Store in Brooklyn, NY, but Mr. S.N.Wolbach, a Grand Is-land, Nebraska, merchant was so impressed by him that he encour-aged him to come to Nebraska. And that was the beginning. This story traces the life and works of David Kaufmann, his successes in business in Nebraska, his deep involvement in various communities and voluntary associations. Also, it details and docu-ments his personal efforts, involving serious risks to his reputation and fortune, to save more than 80 families from the Holocaust – a record unmatched by any other individual in the United States. The book is based on meticulous research by the authors and many interviews with the survivors of the families who “Uncle David” saved from the Holocaust. A man, a place, a story…how personal courage of one person saved the lives of many others during the time of the Holocaust.

This is an important book not simply because it deals with one of the most remarkable individuals of German history of the late 18th-early 19th centuries, but because it explores some new foundations of liberalism in Germany. “Humboldt represents a different aspect of Germany than that we usually associate with later Bismarkian notions of the central role of the bureaucraticstate. We do not generally think of German political thinkers (apart from Kant) as significant contributors to the development of the liberal tradition. Yet, in both his writings and in his political and governmental life, Humboldt’sabsolute defence of liberty, advocacy of individuality, scepticism about the role of the state, and active promotion of liberal and democratic institutions make him an outstanding exemplar of the often neglected German branch of classical liberalism” - from the Introduction by John Roberts Wilhelm von Humboldt has been called by Madame de Stael “the greatest intellect in Europe,” while Talleyrand called him “one of the three ablest statesmen of Europe.” He was a poet, classicist, translator, author of books on history, aesthetics, anthropology, linguistics, political theory and government institutions, a public servant, educational reformer, diplomat, very close friend and intellectual comrade to Schiller and Goethe and he lived through the age of Napoleon and the Congress of Vienna. This new study is based on a complete and thorough reading of von Humboldt’s writings and biography. The focus is to re-assess the origins and particular nature of von Humboldt’s life and writings in the context of an understanding of contemporary liberalism and liberal theory. The author asserts that German liberalism requires a re-evaluation and the works of Wilhelm von Humboldt are a significant clue to that reconsideration. The Hon. John Roberts, P.C., hold a D. Phil from Oxford University, has taught political theory at the University of Toronto and various other universities. He had a diplomatic career in the Canadian foreign service prior to becoming a Member of the Canadian House of Commons and then a Cabinet Minister, serving in a number of portfolios under Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. He is the author of numerous articles in political theory and The Liberal Agenda.

The Clever Adultress& Other Stories A Treasury of Jain Literature

edited by Phyllis Granoff

The stories in this collection span almost one thousand years of story-telling in India., Most originate in North In-dia and all were written by Jain Monks for the edification and amusement of the faithful. Jain literature is both rich and varied. Stories were told in verse and prose, in Sanskrit and in vernacular lan-guages. Some resemble simple folk tales while others are as sophisticated as courtly romances. The stories in Jain literature are about holy men and holy places, famous kings and courtiers and those not often heard in ancient and medieval India – women and toiling villagers. The treasures of India’s heritage of story-telling are known to us today mainly from these Jain stories which have been carefully preserved through the ages. The stories in The Clever Adulteress have been trans-lated by a renowned group of scholars from India, North America and Europe. Each translator has chosen his or her favorites from the vast treasures of Jain literature. Dr. Phyllis Granoff is currently the Lex Hixon Pro-fessor of World Religions at Yale University and one of the most renowned scholars of Indian philosophy and litera-ture. After graduating from Radcliffe College she earned her Ph.D. in Sanskrit, Indian Studies and Fine Arts from Har-vard University. She is fluent in numerous Indian languages, including Sanskrit, Prakrit, Pali, Ardha Magadhi, Bengalo, Hindi, Assamese, Gujarati and Oriya. She has published twelve books, some seventy articles, and now is the editor of the Journal of Indian Philosophy.

The Literary DetectiveA Guide to the Study of Great Literary Works by Glen Paul Hammond

It may seem obvious – but it is not! How to read a book, a novel? How to increase your joy at reading an old or a new work? How to inject new vitality into an old and, perhaps, boring activity? Is there a method or a technique in reading a novel which can illuminate the meanings behind the story? The Literary Detective answers these questions in a bold, imaginative and accessible manner! Reading is similar to a treasure hunt. You set out, you collect clues and you hope to discover a treasure, or solve a mystery. How does it work? Great detectives start out with an open mind, unaware of what lies ahead of them. They investigate, they examine the evidence, they collect the clues, they ask questions, they think things through, until they solve the mystery. Glen Hammond argues that anybody - a casual reader, a student, or a teacher - can learn the techniques of this new kind of literary detection. In eighteen chapters - Sleuthing, The Creative Relationship, Tools of the Trade, Villains, Method, Title, Repetition, Characterization, Setting, Associative Pairing, Page Space, Case Closed, Expert Witnesses - Glenn Hammond introduces you to the excitement of reading and the treasures to be found in lit-erary work. Glen Paul Hammond earned an Honours degree in Psychology and an MA in English Literature from the University of Toronto and a B. Ed at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. He has been a therapist in Applied Behavioural Analysis, Verbal Modification Therapy, an instructor for the University of Toronto’s School of Continuing Stud-ies as well as a Secondary School Teacher of English Literature. He now teaches at a private school in the Toronto area.

Continuumsa novel by Robert Carr

The endless mysteries of mathematics – and especially the unresolved paradoxes of mathematical thought – is central to this work of fiction. Continuums is partly about the resolution of Cantor’s Conjecture or the Continuum Hypothesis, a mathematical problem which haunted thinkers at the beginning of the last century. Continuums is also, of course, about people, trapped in their own worlds, unable to find a way out, trying to resolve paradoxes, seeking resolution. Alexandra is a brilliant mathematician whose career and family unravel following the flight of her brother from Com-munist Romania. She delays, procrastinates, but she too de-parts for North America and leaves behind her husband and her daughter. Asuero Aroso is Alexandra’s first mentor and colleague. He is a Sephardic Jew, born in Istanbul, a gifted student of the eminent mathematician David Hilbert, an extraordinary but obscure mathematician, also stuck in Romania. His story is the story of a young genius, an incompatible and unhappy marriage, an epochal mathematics discovery left unherald-ed, a man stuck in a paradoxical world and in an impossible, incomprehensible and cruel political system. The drama between these two people unfolds as their relationship evolves from a professional one to friendship and beyond. Robert Carr has found a most intriguing vehicle to explore the interplay between the world of mathematics and the world of two hu-man beings situated in mid-century Romania. It is a bold, imaginative, engaging novel. Robert Carr was born in Bucharest and at the age of 24, he fled the Communist regime. He moved from France to Israel and then settled in Canada. He was trained as an engineer and worked in the aerospace industry. He now writes full time. This is his first novel.

Out of Hand Three Novellasby Leon Whiteson

Leon Whiteson’s work, both fiction and non-fiction, is gaining an international reputation and is now published in Italian and Spanish. He has lived and worked in a number of countries, including Zimbabwe, South Africa, Britain, Spain, Greece, Canada and the U.S. Leon’s fiction has been described in many ways. “… a haunting book.” (Ottawa Citizen on Whitesnake); “…his profane sense of humour tickles the brain and excites the tongue.” (Los Angeles Herald-Examiner on Fool); “…emotional, immediate and rich…a realm of primal delight.” (Los Angeles Times on A Garden Story); “A hypnotically erotic passion play that traverses the line between madness and love…a fascinating poetic novel.” (Fearless Reviews on Killing Lana).

“Leon Whiteson’s remarkable talent is already fully mature. It is distinguished by a tremendous vitality and power serving a highly original quality of insight. His writing strives for greatness and achieves it.” - Doris Lessing, Nobel Prize Winner, in the New Statesman

“Whiteson’s work may arouse dissent, perplexity or anger, bit it will arouse your interest and stimulate your mind unforgettably.” - Peter Vansittart, in The Times of London

In Out of Hand the narrator is the severed right hand of a gifted artist imprisoned in a bottle of formaldehyde and is tormented by his immobilized imagination. While he despises the mundane man to who he was attached, he bitterly envies his freedom. In Didn’t I Always Know the voice is that of a middle-aged woman sliding into chaos and madness knowing that her freedom of imagination is a ruinous burden. In Deathman, the speaker is a young architect who comes to face to face with an ancient master of death and struggles against the terrible duty that is laid upon him against his will.. These stories portray the confrontation with death and each narrator pays the price of being human – the price of their very lives, whether they live or die in the act. As in all his work, Leon Whiteson is both passionate yet subtle, violent yet tender and offers his readers another radical entry into the heart of darkness. Deathman was broadcast by the BBC in 1970 under the title “Blood of the Lamb” and starred the famous Royal Shakespeare Company actor Frank Finlay.

Premonitions A novel by Eric KochIn the decade before 1914 Schwabing, the suburb of Munich, was a magnet which drew artists, writers, freethinkers and many others who wanted to opt out of bourgeois society and experiment with new ideas. It was the Haight-Ashbury of early 20th Europe. Richard Schlosser is a young man from North German who goes to Munich to study medicine. He suffers from severe sleep deprivation, obsessed by his break with his father, a Lutheran clergyman. Richard is drawn to Schwabing to see Dr. Otto Gross, an exciting personality, the son of a famous criminologist, a dis-ciple of Freud, an anarchist and also a drug-addict. When Rich-ard tries to contact him he discovers he has disappeared. Has he run away? Is he dead? Was he murdered? Has he planned his own disappearance? All of Schwabing is abuzz. Richard begins his own, slow, meticulous hunt, assisted by the daughter of a bookseller with whom he falls in love. In his investigations he encounters a number of Schwabing’s most lively per-sonalities, members of Stefan George’s ‘Cosmic Circle’, the Countess Franziska von Reventlow who is a leading member of Schwabing’s ‘Erotic Movement’, the young Thomas Mann, Kandinsky, Paul Klee and other painters, the anarchists Gustav Landauer and Erich Mühsam, and many others who frequent Schwabing’s cafés. In his final encounter in 1913 he meets Adolf Hitler who has just arrived from Vienna. Part mystery/suspense novel, part intellectual history of Germany and Europe of the early 20th century, Premonitions is quintessential Eric Koch. Eric Koch’s most recent work, I Remember the Location Exactly, Foreword by Alfred Grosser, (Mosaic Press, 2006 ) won the Canadian Jewish Book Award and will be published in German by Weidle Verlag in 2008. He is the author of 10 works of fiction, 5 works of non-fiction and his works have been translated into German, Italan and Chinese.
