SECTION THREE

PLACES OP DETENTION.

I. STRAFGEFANGNIS, 112, HOMBERGERLANDSTRASSE, PREUNGESHEIM, FRANKFORT AM MAIN.This prison was administered by the military and S.S. We were forced to work in an outbuilding in the prison courtyard, working on certain engine parts, such a.^carburetor needles and very small nuts and bolts, cutting the castellations in the nuts, these we understood to be for fighter aircraft, and to coin the German phrase, no work, no f ood.The prison itself was reasonably clean, but quite a few beatings took place. The food was rea.sonable sometimes, but it was really a, starvation diet. Some guards were reasonable, others were brutal. One in particular was named Hildebrand.

2. We were lodged in an old prison in Wurtzburg, Ba.varia, the name and address I never knew. Conditions here were extremely bad, sanitation terrible, food very little, mainly potato peelings in hot water. To my knowledge the administration was the same as at Frankfort. No work was done by me at this prison.

3. We were lodged for nine days in a building in Wurtzburg. This building was used by the military as a riding school. Conditions here were really terrible. The ground floor on which we were congregated was compiled ofrubble, dust etc. There were no arrangements

for sanitation. The floor was covered with human excreta, prisoners who died were left "'here they dropped. The stench was horrible. The food was potato peels in water once a d a y .

CONTINUATION OP SECTION THERE.4. The last prison was a very large prison in

Straubing, Bavaria. The naine and address I never knew. I did nibt work at this prison, I wa.s confined to my cell for ray duration there. This prison was administered by the military and S.S. Upon arrival we were herded into the prison shower aided by beatings with pieces of wood, the target being the kidneys. Food was very short hereMy'duration at this prison was short, early one morning we left on the march for Dachau.

SECTION THREE "В".

DATE _ OF__IMPRISONMENTI7th March, 1944 to 30th April 1945.

PRISON NUMBER.This number I have now forgotten, but my cell number in Frankfort was A 2/38.REASONS FOR IMPRISONMENT.

I was wrongly convicted of being a leader ßß a Black Market ring in Guernsey. This was entirely false in every respect, and was denied by me at my tria.l in a German Military Court in 1944 in Guernsey. My sentence was told me by one of my military guards before the court sat to hear my case. It proved: correct.

SECTION THREE 1IQII

DISABILITY.

As я result of my imprisonment and treatment in Germany, I was ill for a period of four years. I contracted tuberculosis ofboth lungs, in 1950 I had a, thoracopla.sty performed on my left lung. This operation rendered it usless, but saved my life. My right lung ha,s a number of scars. In 1955 I had further trouble with my right lung, Iwas in hospital for a. period of nine months.

As a. consequence I cannot do the things I should be able to, on medical advice I must ta,le things easily for the remainder of my days. I

I also get trouble with my rig;ht ankle during cold weather, this being due to repeated hits with a rifle butt by a military escort.

Page 8: FOREIGN OFFICE · 2017. 10. 4. · Your Ref: HNP/I238. "Grenada", Les Merriennes, St Martins, GUERNSEY. G.C. Littler, Esq., Foreign Office, LONDON. S.W.I. Dear Sir, Thank you for

FTTR T H lîR IN F OF MAT I OK .

The journey from Frankfort to Wurf, zburg which was_ in seeled cattle trucks, took four days. At the outset of the journey, we were given a,piece of bread the size of the usual square loaf, and a, small piece of sausage. The trucks were well sealed, no li.o-ht, no air, no water and no sanitation. We were ctfarnmed about sixty prisoners to a truck.

Stage two <"ar from where we left the truck to be her•' ed along like cattle and treated like cattle, rifle butts and sticks were used to urge где on. WE eventually arrived at Wurtzburg prison in the early hours of the morning.

Sometime afterwards we were marched to the riding school building. After nine days we left by open truck for Straubing . Those that tried to escape from the truck were shot at and wounded or killed. I would estimate that there were a.bout two thousand prisoners in our contingent, bгдt numbers decreasing as the journey progressed.Near the A u s t r i a n border, we were herded into sealed trucks once more. This time we could only stand up we were so crowded, anybody that fell could not get up and was trampled underfoot. When we were let out, we found ourselves inside the prison courtyard.

Th1' last staae of our journey was a forced march ho Dachau, for ргдгроееэ of extermination. We slept out in fields in the pouring rain. We parsed through Landshut, Moosberg and Freising. About five miles out from Freising the guns of the Americans could be beard, we were then ordered to retrace our steps.Food was one meal per day, dry bread wtih a well watered dov,n apology for jam. Villagers put out baths о " fresh water for us to drink, some even gave us food but to be caught by the gua.rds meant that anything could happen to one. If caught, the result was to be knocked senseless or killed with a rifle butt. We were told that stragglers would be shot, quite a number were.Whilst the above is a. brief survey of conditions, and treatment, so much more could be added.
