Consider The Source Week #2…

‘There’s More Where That Came From!”

In the second week of our series, Consider the Source, Pastor Lynwood preaches on bringing our tithe to God.

ENTRUSTED OR ENTITLED? -In Luke 12, Jesus told a parable of a man who was blessed with a large harvest. The man did not remember that it was God who gave him the harvest. Instead, he decided to hoard it for himself. Later, this man would lose everything. The first question in uncovering a M.O.R.E. mentality is, “Do you see yourself as entrusted or entitled?” Such a sense of

entitlement can come from forgetting the source of our wealth. Regardless of how much or how little we have, feeling entitled to the things we possess can make us selfish and ungrateful. However, by taking a simple step of grateful obedience (such as tithing) to God, we can acknowledge the fact that we’re entrusted with God’s resources, not entitled to our own.

RELATIONSHIP OR RELUCTANCE? -In 2 Corinthians 9, the Apostle Paul writes that we shouldn’t give reluctantly or out of compulsion, but from a cheerful heart. Not only does God love a cheerful giver, a cheerful giver loves God. After all, love always give. When you truly love something, you don’t have a problem giving your money, time, or talents to it. There’s no reluctance in that kind of giving; only relationship. A loving relationship leads us to give with excitement. Likewise, giving to God with a cheerful heart is a sign that we understand the Gospel. It shows that we knowing in our hearts that God gave everything for us and that we love Him enough to give back to Him.

OBEDIENT OR OPTIONAL – We are challenged us to examine our own motives and thoughts to see if we truly tithe out of obedience or if we make it an optional thing, based more on conditional circumstances. Solomon wrote Ecclesiastes 11 to remind us that those who are too busy watching and waiting on circumstances to change will miss their opportunity to reap or sow anything. If we build our lives around God, He will bless us. As Jesus said, “Where our treasure is, there are hearts will be also.” Tithing is a simple act of obedience that shows God our hearts are centered on Him.

MULTIPLY OR MAINTAIN? - In John 6, Jesus miraculously multiplied a few loaves of bread and some fish to feed thousands of people. Afterwards, He revealed that He is the Bread of Life, and those who come to Him will never hunger. When we bring our limited resources to the unlimited source, God multiplies our tithe to enrich every area of our lives with His blessing, so that others may see His work and come to know Him.

On the grace journey together with him, Lynwood

How to Walk Through Life’s Hot Spots

Living through the pressures of life can be compared to walking through fire. The Old Testament prophet Isaiah believed that if you have faith in God, you can walk through fire and not be burned. He didn’t promise that you won’t feel the heat, just that you won’t be burned.

Keep On Walking. A surefire way to get burned is to stop walking. When you are afraid, or under extreme stress, or hurting -- keep going. You will get through if you keep dealing with the everyday tasks at hand to the best of your ability. PERSEVERE

Remember That This Difficult Time Will Pass. It may feel that you are in a repeating time warp, but realize that pain is time-limited. All problems have a beginning and an end. BE PATIENT

Make Rough Times Work For You. Not everything is good, but the Bible reminds us that everything can be used for good if you submit your will to God. Look for ways to learn, grow, or cope in your pain or stress. HAVE COURAGE

Take “What Is” And Make The Most Of It. Make lemonade from your lemons. You are not called upon to create perfection from every situation, only to make the most of it. BE CONTENT

Clean Up Your Own Trash. Stand on your own feet and don’t try to blame others for your problems. You are not a victim. Choose to live the rest of your life with a controlled response to what is happening. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY

Be True To Your Self. You will have more strength for dealing with ordeals in life if you have the courage to be true to your own values. Hypocrisy destroys internal energy. MODEL INTEGRITY

Be Gladder Than Madder. Expressions of gratitude calm the soul and clear the mind. SHOW GRATITUDE

Have As Much Fun As You Can. Anticipation of fun raises the level of your energy. Learn to laugh through your trials. DISPLAY HUMOR Determine What Is Within Your Control. You cannot control what happens to you, but you can choose the frame you put around your experiences. You can choose how you will deal with all situations. EXHIBIT INTERNAL CONROL

The Chicken and the Egg The little boy was so excited as he and his mother waited for signs of life from the chicken egg they hoped would soon hatch. The mother hen had left the nest, busy caring for other newborn, and they decided they had better put this egg in a box with a light in it, to keep it warm. They waited and waited, and finally they heard the first tiny tap and the chick began to peck on the eggshell to be set free.

The little chick pecked and pushed and pushed and pecked. The little boy felt so sorry for him and wanted to help. It would be so easy to just quickly crack open the shell and let him out. But the mother cautioned him, explaining that it was important for the chick to have to work hard to get out of the shell so that his body would later be strong enough to survive outside the shell. Leaving him alone and letting him work his way out was actually an act of love. That is the way our heavenly Father feels toward us. He sees the many challenges which we face. And all He would have to do is just speak a word and all our problems and challenges would be solved. But He knows best. He knows that allowing us to work through them, and “peck our way through our challenges,” so to speak, will enrich our lives in the long run. God is in the character-developing business, and our trials help develop us into what he wants us to be. James refers to this process when he says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything” (1:2-4, NIV). Peter speaks of the same thing, referring to your “...inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire – may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed (1 Peter 1:4-7). Because of God’s loving and benevolent plan and purposes for us, Paul could write, “Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).

Shaken!

“I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.” – Ps 6:8

The dictionary definition of “shaken” is “to cause to sway, rock, totter, to agitate or disturb profoundly, to cause to doubt or waver; weaken: to shake ones faith.” David loved God and trusted God. David was not perfect – he made many mistakes in his life, and had many trials in his life. Through it all, he trusted God. He looked to God for direction and protection. He was “a man after God’s heart.” Because David always looked to God, he knew that regardless of his circumstances, he would never be shaken.

What is about to shake you? Is it someone challenging your faith or maybe persecuting you for your beliefs? Are relations with a family member or a friend strained? A sticky situation at work or a financial crisis? Have you recently received a bad report from your physician? Or an addiction threatening to rule your life? Whatever it is, look to God. Make God the focus of your thoughts and your prayers. Ask God for protection from whatever is trying to make you sway, rock or totter... and you will not be shaken! With David you can say: Psalm 125:1 “Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.”

Three People In Your Life

Everyone should have a “Paul” and a “Timothy” in their life. Let me expand that by one, and suggest that everyone should have three individuals in their life: a Paul, a Barnabas, and a Timothy.

A Paul is an older person who is willing to mentor you, to build into your life. Not someone who’s smarter or more gifted than you, but somebody who’s been down the road. Somebody willing to share their strengths and weaknesses - everything they have learned in the laboratory of life. Somebody whose faith you’ll want to imitate.

A Barnabas is a soul brother, somebody who loves you but is not impressed by you. Somebody to whom you can be accountable. Some-body who’s willing to keep you honest, who’s willing to say, “Hey, man, you’re neglecting your wife, and don’t give me any guff!”

A Timothy is a younger person into whose life you are building. For a model, read 1 and 2 Timothy. Here was Paul, the quintessential mentor, building into the life of his protégée - affirming, encouraging, teaching, correcting, directing, praying --Do you have these three guys in your life?

Reaching the Unchurched Begins With Relationships

A friend of mine once belonged to a cult, and he told me he never once felt fear when he told people about the things he believed. But, after becoming a Christian, he said he was filled with fear when he began sharing his faith.

It's a powerful reminder that we do not struggle "against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms" (Ephesians 6:12 NIV).

The enemy doesn't want us to share our faith, and so he fights us with fear. But God does not give us his spirit to make us slaves again to fear; he fills us with his spirit to show us we are his children and that he is "Abba, Father" (Romans 8:15-16).

Some research suggests that only five percent of the unchurched in America are likely to be highly resistant to the Gospel, antagonistic toward Christians, or belligerent in their conversations with and about Christians. At five percent, it says these "hardcore unchurched" account for about 8 million people, but it estimates the other 152 million who are unchurched are far more open to hearing the Gospel.

That being the case, we're more likely to find people open to the Gospel than not, and the things we often fear will happen will only happen – if they happen – with a very small minority of those outside the Church.

When it comes to reaching those most resistant to the Gospel, we need to be prepared to defend our faith and to deal directly with misperceptions about Christianity. We also need to be sensitive to their hurt and anger.

Most of all – and this is true with anyone we want to talk to about Jesus – we have to develop relationships with those outside the Church.

When the religious leaders expressed a concern that Jesus was making friends with the unchurched, Jesus said, "Healthy people don't need a doctor – sick people do... For I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners" (Matthew 9:12b, 13b)

During your prayer time today: Ask God to reveal to you two people he wants you to talk to about Jesus. Ask him to prepare their hearts for hearing the Gospel. Also, ask him to prepare your heart to talk to them.

Then, in faith, step past your fears and believe Jesus is already at work creating a "divine appointment" for you to talk to them. Now, watch for the way he answers your prayer.

May God anoint you this week as you share your faith!

No Experience Is Wasted With God "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all." – Psalm 34:19 If you are like me, I can imagine we both might look at Psalm 34:11 and think, "Oh, yeah? Well, I'm the middle of affliction right now and I haven't been delivered." Understandable reaction, especially when we're hurting whether physically or emotionally. But you know what? Here is where our faith comes in. Believe that your deliverance is coming -- or believe it is not! Either line your faith up with the word of God and stand strong, or rest in

the temporary comfort of doubt, and then complain nothing is happening! If the Word of God say He delivers the righteous -- then for those in right standing with God, your deliverance is coming. We don't know how, we don't know when – it might happen on earth, it might happen when we are welcomed into Heaven. But God keeps His promises, so you can rest assured... you WILL be delivered! In the meantime, stand in your faith and lean into His strength. Use the current hardship as an opportunity to grow in patience or perseverance or grace. God wastes nothing – not even our hardships. And He WILL bring you through! Distorted Perspectives Too many of us live with a distorted perspective of God. We believe that God loves; we just aren't convinced at the core of our being that He loves us. We either jump on the performance treadmill to try and earn God's love, or we wallow in guilt and condemnation. This distorted perspective affects how we see ourselves. We look in the mirror, and instead of seeing one loved and forgiven by God, created in His image, empowered to influence the world for Him, we see some-thing else. We see images from the past. We play the destructive video clip over and over in our minds and come to the same conclusion: I'm a failure... fat... insignificant... ugly... worthless... dumb...hopeless... unworthy... unloved... a nobody. If this sounds familiar to you, then I need to warn you about something: Distorted images are not only shaping your perspective but are also hindering your possibilities. If you see yourself as insignificant long enough, you'll start to act accordingly. Embracing God's perspective of you – living with eyes wide open – is important as it allows you to become the person God created you to be!

Trust and Obey to Release God's Power in Your Life

"We see, then, that they were not able to enter the land, be-cause they did not believe."– Hebrews 3:19 The saddest verse to me in the entire Bible is today's verse. It says the people of God were not able to enter the Promised Land because of their unbelief. Think about this: For 400 years God planned the liberation of the Israelites from Egypt. To convince Pharaoh to let them go,

God sent the various plagues to Egypt. He opened the Red Sea and he fed the Israelites with manna and quail. He took care of all of their needs as he brought them to the edge of the Promised Land. But at the point of decision, God's people say, "We can't do it." And the Bible says because of their unbelief, they were not allowed to go in and they missed all that God had planned for their lives. I don’t want that to happen to you or me. I don’t want us to miss what God has planned for our lives simply because we were afraid or unwilling to move in faith. Our unbelief limits God. We must choose to obey God in faith. Every time we trust God's wisdom and do what He says to do, even when we don't understand, we deepen our relationship with God. Understand, though, we obey God, not out of duty or fear or compulsion, but because we love him and trust that he knows what is best for us. We want to follow Christ out of gratitude for all he has done for us, and the closer we follow Jesus, the deeper our relationship with him becomes. Unbelievers often think Christians obey out of obligation or guilt or fear of punishment, but the op-posite is true. Because we have been forgiven and set free, we obey out of love – and our obedience brings great joy! Jesus said, "I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey me, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father and remain in his love. I have told you this so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow!" (John 15:9-11 NLT) The greatest tragedy of your life would be for you to stand at the edge of your destiny, but to be afraid to enter into all that God has planned for you. Your obedience in moving forward – to take risks and step out in faith – will release God's power in your life. What are you afraid of right now? Whatever it is, it doesn't stand a chance when you do whatever God tells you to do. There is no reason to be afraid. The Lord is on our side!

The Last Impression An engineer, a psychologist, and a theologian were hunting in the wilderness of northern Canada. Suddenly, the temperature dropped and a furious snowstorm was upon them. They came across an isolated cabin, far removed from any town. The hunters had heard that the locals in the area were quite hospitable, so they knocked on the door to ask permission to rest. Nothing was unusual about the cabin except the stove. It was large, pot-bellied, and made of cast-iron. What was strange about it was its location ... it was suspended in midair by wires attached to the ceiling

beams. "Fascinating," said the psychologist. "It is obvious that this lonely trapper, isolated from humanity, has elevated this stove so that he can curl up under it and vicariously experience a return to the womb." "Nonsense!" replied the engineer. "The man is practicing the laws of thermodynamics. By elevating his stove, he has discovered a way to distribute heat more evenly throughout the cabin." "With all due respect," interrupted the theologian, "I'm sure that hanging his stove from the ceiling has religious meaning. Fire LIFTED UP has been a religious symbol for centuries." The three debated the point for several hours without resolving the issue. When the trapper finally returned, they immediately asked him why he had hung his heavy pot-bellied stove from the ceiling. His answer was succinct. "Had plenty of wire, not much stove pipe." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
