On November 9-10 the Junior Golf Association of Arizona held its annual JGAA Fall Classic at Western Skies Golf Course and August Ranch Golf Course. Even with a limited field at this year’s event due to darkness, there was still the same great competition we have grown accustomed to at JGAA tourna-ments. In addition to the impressive scoring, two JGAA members each had a Hole-In-One on the final day of the event! First was Noah Nuez, 11, on hole #2 with his hybrid; and second was Nathaniel An-derson, 12, on hole #14 with his 5-iron. The two aces definitely added to the excitement of the event. Congratulations to all of the champions at this year’s Fall Classic! Everyone posted great scores!

Hauptman Provides Free Golf Clinics While fulfilling her high school’s re-quired community service hours at St. Vincent de Paul’s medical clinic, JGAA Junior Board Member, Megan Hauptman, discovered the clinic’s need for additional youth group workouts in their Diabetes Preven-tion Department. Since the clinic’s regular schedule would be finishing at the beginning of the Summer, Hauptman decided to host a group
golf clinic for any kids who were interested. With the help of her father, Sarah Schmelzel, and Denny Schmelzel, Hauptman was able to hold 10 sessions this past summer, once a week, for 2 hours at Palo Verde Golf Course. “I am planning on doing it next summer. It was so fun intro-ducing them to a game that they wouldn't have exposure to otherwise!”

The annual Haunted Golf scramble and pumpkin carving contest was host to over 60 girls and their family and friends on October 18th. The 4 and 5 girl scramble teams made their way around 4 spooky holes at Encanto Golf Course with a moonlit sky and the city scape as a backdrop. The flagsticks were lit with various colored glowsticks as well as the fairways and bunkers to guide the players and spectators around the course. If the teams weren’t chasing their lit golf balls around the moonlit golf course, they were carving and decorating their pumpkins to resemble minions, hamburgers, pirates, witches and a breast cancer symbol to name just a few. The creativity amongst the 14 pumpkins was outstanding and made for a tough decision for the pumpkin carving judges. The event was a memorable experience for the new Itty Bitty division players and their families as well as the 18 hole players in the Solid Championship Division.

The very first of the These Boys Are Good! clinics was held October 12, at ASU Karsten with the help of the ASU Men’s Golf Team and PGA Professional, Scott Watkins. Held by the JGAA, the Southwest Section PGA, The First Tee of Phoenix and The Boys Scouts of America-Grand Canyon Council, the event hosted almost 100 boys at the ASU Karsten practice facility to learn about golf and the First Tee of Phoenix’s Life Skills curriculum. Several of the participants were active Boy Scouts and had the oppor-tunity to earn their golf merit badge. Thanks to all of the organizations who were involved with this great event! All involved are excited for the next These Boys Are Good! clinic which will be held Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Palm Valley GC. We hope to see you there!
