Ford goes Hollywood to improvevehicle design and ergonomics
Ford is using Hollywood technology to help engineers
improve vehicle design, comort and ergonomics.
By employing the same motion-capture technology
that animators used to create such movies asAvatar,
Polar Express andLord of the Rings , Ford can run
thousands o tests to study how people o all shapes
and sizes interact with a variety o vehicle designs.
Test subjects outtted with up to 50 sensors perform
a series o movements which are recorded and used to
create digital humans who then enter, exit and operate
virtual vehicles to determine what works best.

Hot December sales driveFords market share gainBy John Fossen
Strong U.S. salesin the nal month o
2009 helped propel
Ford to its rst ull-
year market share
increase since 1995.
Improvement in
every category cars, trucks and
crossovers and every brand boosted
the December sales o Ford, Lincoln
and Mercury vehicles 33 percent
versus a year ago.
Fords plan is working, said Ken
Czubay, vice president, Marketing,Sales and Service. Customer consid-
eration continues to grow or our
high-quality, uel-ecient vehicles.
The Ford Fusion (up 83 percent) and
Ford Escape (up 75 percent) posted
record December sales and Fusion also
notched a new ull-year sales record.
F-Series extended its string as the
countrys best-selling truck to 33
consecutive years, gaining market
share despite an overall decline in ull-
size pickup sales.
Ford Taurus sales increased a
whopping 110 percent in December
compared to year ago and Mustang
sales shot up 62 percent.
Lincoln sales were up more than 15
percent while Mercury sales increased
nearly 6 percent or the month.
December also marked the 14th
time in the last 15months that Ford
reported increased
retail share.
Every important
consumer metric about
the Ford brand nished
the year at a record high. For example,
avorable opinion increased more
than 20 percent rom the beginning o
2009, and intention to buy a Ford
vehicle grew by more than 30 percent.

positive momentum than at any pointin the companys history, noted

jumped 26 percent in December,
marking the companys seventh
straight month o retail gains.
As Canadas best-selling vehicle, the
Ford F-Series also continued its run as
the countrys top-selling pickup truck
or a record 44 consecutive years.
The Ford Taurus, Fusion, Edge, Flex

the 2009 to 2010 model year.
The projected resale o Ford
vehicles increased by U.S. $1,310
per vehicle rom 2009 to 2010
models more than any other
ull-line manuacturer.
Ford already held a residual
value advantage over its U.S.-
based rivals and some Fordvehicles have now surpassed
competing vehicles rom Toyota in
average residual value.
The 2010 Ford Fusion is
expected to be worth $687 more
than the 2010 Toyota Camry ater

A new generation o Fords
popular SYNC system controls the
unctionality behind MyFord and
helps provide a saer, smarter way
to connect drivers with in-car

While oering more, MyFord
also makes it easier than ever to
access all thistechnology
through voice
control, ve-way buttons on the
steering wheel and an 8-inch
touch screen that controls the
in-car phone, entertainment,
navigation and climate controls.

screen, this smaller screen also

screen also can be individually

climate control and other setting
The 8-inch screen is central to
the MyFord Touch experience.

access to one o our categories

MyFord Touch-equipped vehicles
will eature a WiFi signal receiver
that will provide Internet access,

developed web browser using the
systems 8-inch touch screen.
In addition, plugging an owners
compatible USB mobile
broadband modem sometimescalled an air card into SYNCs
USB port will produce a secure
wireless connection that will be
broadcast throughout the vehicle.

While the just-introduced FordFocus has been called a global
car or its worldwide reach and
production, the idea is nothing
new or Ford.
Back in 1908, Henry Ford
launched an aordable vehicle
that would dominate the global
automotive market, change the
physical landscape and extend
personal transportation to the
masses the Ford Model T.
Ford called it The Universal
Car while others came to call itThe Car that Changed the World.
At the time o its launch, Ford

was driven across

vehicle sales jumped 19.8
percent in its 19 main
markets in November,
marking the companys sixth
consecutive monthly volume
increase.
The resulting 9.1 percent
year-to-date market share
was the highest since 1999.
Ford was the market
leader in the United
Kingdom and Ireland, the
import leader in France and
Italy and also scored a 30
percent jump in year-to-date
sales in Germany, its bestperormance since 1999.
BBCs Top Gearrates Fords strong, green
Ford cars won two BBC Top Gearawards that recognize
the companys strengths in very dierent segments.
The Ford Focus RS, the astest and most powerul ront-
wheel-drive Ford ever produced in Europe, was selected as
Muscle Car o the Year by the magazine, while Fords
lowest carbon-emitting model, the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic,
was named Green Car o the Year.
Top Gearcalled the Focus RS massive fun (and) a bargain

Two large wind turbines have
started producing green energy to
power Fords assembly plant in
Genk, Belgium, the home o the
Mondeo, S-MAX and Galaxy
models.
The plants two 150-meter tall
wind turbines each have an outputo two megawatts, enough to
power 2,500 private homes.
Five years ago, Fords Dagenham,
England, diesel plant became the
worlds rst auto plant to meet all
o its electricity needs rom two
giant on-site wind turbines.

In Australia, Ford has ound a way t
recycle the sand and other wastematerial rom its Geelong iron oundr
and save up to U.S. $885,000 a year.
With rising environmental concern
and landll costs, Ford developed a
system to reuse sand, water and scrap
internally and sell recycled sand and
remaining tiny metal scraps to external customers.
The Geelong plant also reuses its wastewater or production,
lters its exhaust air and dust and reclaims 97 percent o the san
it uses or iron-casting.
