From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Date: November 21, 2016 at 3:22:14 PM CST To: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> Subject: Congratulations! You are a Healthy Habits for Life Grant Recipient!

It is my pleasure to let you know that your school has been selected for a Healthy Habits for Life grant. Thank you for submitting the application and congratulations! Please note the following very important information that includes action items before your check will be sent. I know there is a lot of bold and underlining below, but these are all items to draw your attention to!! We have attached a grant acknowledgement form which indicates that you will use the funds as indicated in the application. There is one form for public schools and one for private schools. Please use the one appropriate for your school. Your district's superintendent will need to sign the form. Please write on the form the USD number, your specific school name and the name of your superintendent. If you are a private or parochial school, your highest ranking official needs to sign the form. We are required to have at the minimum an electronic copy of the signed form returned to us before we can process and mail the check. Once the form has been signed, please email it immediately to [email protected]. We would like the original as well, but in order to get your check processed, we are required to have the electronic version. The form has to be received (at the minimum the electronic version) no later than Friday, December 2. Our check processing for this large of a project, works the best as a batch process. That means that all forms need to be returned before any of the checks are processed. Every year, we are extremely challenged by having to contact recipient schools numerous times for this form, so please prioritize getting the form signed by your superintendent immediately. If you run into any major issues to meet the deadline by December 2, please let me know ASAP. Our offices will initiate a public news release to media outlets in our service area that will include a list of recipients. Please do not contact any media outlet about your grant award in advance of this release or have the grant announced at your school board meeting yet since school board meetings are public records. The release should be sent towards the end of December, but the exact timing has not been determined. We will do our best to let you all know when the news release has been distributed, so that you are welcome to promote the grant. After we have received the acknowledgement form back, your check will be mailed with an accompanying letter. The packet that is mailed will be a large white and blue envelope with the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas logo. Last year, numerous schools overlooked the envelope and tossed it or didn't open it immediately, which caused some issues on this end! The envelope should be addressed to you, so please watch for it. Best wishes implementing your Healthy Habits for Life program to make students lead healthier lives! Please contact me or my assistant Dawn Platt if you have questions. My contact

Subject: Board of Education Recognition Month

Initiated By: Yvonda Offerle, Public Information Officer

Reviewed By: Administrative Cabinet BACKGROUND INFORMATION: January is School Board Recognition Month, and Dodge City USD 443 joins other public schools across the state to say “Thank you” to these public servants who are leading for student success in our community’s schools. Public education is a cornerstone of American society, and a highly-valued part of our state’s history. In 1966 the people of Kansas amended the state’s constitution to specifically call for local public schools that are ‘maintained, developed and operated by locally elected boards.’ Local school board members comprise the largest body of publicly-elected officials in our nation. CURRENT CONSIDERATIONS: The Board of Education provides the leadership and vision that impacts the futures of all students in the schools of USD 443. Board members volunteer countless hours by attending meetings, reading reports and discussing ideas. They participate in workshops and seminars so that they can stay on top of education issues and trends. As advocates for public education, they also provide an invaluable service to the families in the community. The school board members study issues, develop policies and make decisions that shape the educational system in Dodge City. They hold the responsibility and oversight for the instructional program of the school district, as well as serve as stewards for the community’s multi-million dollar investment in school facilities and the school district’s annual budget. The Board members also ensure that all schools are accountable to the community. FINANCIAL CONSIDERATIONS: Funds for the gifts of appreciation are available in the annual budget for Board Expenses. There are no additional financial considerations for this recognition of the Board’s service to the community. STAFF RECOMMENDATION: The Board of Education is respectfully requested to receive the appreciation of the students and staff of Dodge City Public Schools, as well as the community, for their service to Unified School District 443.
