Definition
Definition Force Convection• Forced convection is when the flow is caused by external means, such
as by a fan, a pump, or atmospheric winds.
Different between Free Convection and Forced Convection
Mechanism of Forced Convection• The convective heat transfer coefficient h strongly
depends on the fluid properties and roughness of the solid surface, and the type of the fluid flow (laminar or turbulent)
• No slip condition on surface wall (v=0)
Velocity Boundary Layer
Non‐dimensional Groups• Nusselt Number :Non dimensional heat ‐
transfer coefficient• Where : δ is the characteristic length
• Reynold Number :Ratio of inertia forces to viscous forces in the fluid
• Prandtl number :Is a measure of relative thickness of the velocity and thermal boundary layer• where fluid properties are:• mass density : ρ, (kg/m3) • specific heat capacity : Cp (J/kg K)∙• dynamic viscosity : µ, (N s/m2) ∙• kinematic viscosity : ν, µ / ρ (m2/s)• thermal conductivity : k, (W/m K) ∙• thermal diffusivity : α, k/(ρ ∙ Cp) (m2/s)
Thermal Boundary LayerThe thickness of
the thermal boundary layer δt
Laminar Flow• Nusselt number at the location x for laminar flow over a flat
plate is
• Nusselt number over the entire isothermal plate for laminar regime is
Turbulent Flow• Nusselt number at location x for turbulent flow over a flat isothermal
plate is
• Nusselt number over the isothermal plate in turbulent region is
Combined Laminar and Turbulent Flow
• Nusselt number for combined laminar and turbulent flow over a flat isothermal plate is
