NURTURING POTENTIAL

When Jonathan Maniram first came to the United States, he was a shy and timid teenager.Thanks to the Y, Jonathan has found his comfort zone.

After his father passed away, Jonathan’s mother decided to move the family from Guyana to the United Statesfor a better life. During his first summer, Jonathan attended a summer camp to help him learn English but hewas very quiet. “I didn’t say much because my accent made it hard for kids to understand me and it made menervous what they would think,” he says. Things began to change, though, when he entered Harding HighSchool as a freshman and found the after school clubs at the Ralphola Taylor Community Center Y’s ResourceCenter. “I joined the Tae Kwon Do club and just loved it. I made friends, gained more confidence and learnedabout discipline and respect.”

It was also at the Y Resource Center that Jonathan met Youth & Family Director Josh Posey in 2012. Joshintroduced him to the Teen Achievers Program that has a focus on career development, academic achievement,leadership development, and social development. “Josh told me about the program and that part of it would bevisiting colleges, so I signed up.” Over the course of the summer, Jonathan and 7 other teens came to the TaylorCenter every weekday to hear guest speakers talk about different careers, went on day trips, had time to reallyget to know one another and still had time for Tae Kwon Do. “The guest speakers were the best part because Iloved learning about different careers. I changed my mind about where I want to go to school because of what Ilearned.”

At the Taylor Center, Jonathan has a safe place to meet his friends, fellowshipand benefit from positive adult role models. He comes to the Center threetimes a week to hang out with Josh and his friends and keeps up with his TaeKwon Do, even helping out with the younger kids. “My mom likes that I comehere instead of staying at home bored. The Taylor Center is great because thepeople there are really here for you. Josh is always there when I need help withsomething – from writing my resume to getting a learner’s permit, I know I cancount on Josh to steer me in the right direction.” Jonathan has also been ableto hone his leadership skills through the Teen Achievers Program and has evensigned up to be a volunteer for the Strong Kids Campaign. “I like telling peopleabout the Y and invite them to come in and check it out. I feel good giving backto a place that has given so much to me.”

BETTER TOGETHERThe Sanchez family started going to theHamden/North Haven Y in 2009.  They signed theirtwo boys up for swimming lessons because it wasimportant to them that the boys learn this life skill.

Their father, Gus, is a very good swimmer and although mom, Jean,could get in the water and float around, she couldn’t really swimand was terribly afraid of the deep end. The Y’s nurturingenvironment and friendly staff helped them get comfortable rightfrom the start. As Jean notes, “All of the swim instructors becamefamiliar with us right away. They knew our kids names and who wewere even without the kids, so we started coming more and more.”

Jean was very impressed with how the swim instructors seemed totailor the swim lessons around her kids’ personalities. “Tomas hasan outgoing personality and likes to clown around,” says Jean.“The instructors were awesome with him, allowing him to expresshimself while making sure he learned how to swim and to take the

rules in the pool seriously. He is now 8 years old, enrolled in the Minnow class, working on his technique and becoming a stronger swimmer every time hegets in the pool.” Her younger son, Triston, loved the water but was afraid to try swimming without his dad by his side. The instructors again knew how tocoach him when it was time to get in the water without Daddy and now he can’t wait to get in the pool for his lessons.

Seeing how well her sons were doing, Jean was encouraged by the instructors to get in the pool herself. Shortly after her boys started taking lessons, Jeantook the plunge and enrolled in the adult lessons. She was intimidated by a lot of things – enrolling in a class with 12-14 year olds; getting in the pool infront of everyone watching their kids take lessons; braving the deep end - but she got through it with the encouragement of all the instructors and AquaticsDirector to keep coming back. “The first time I swam the backstroke (chicken /airplane/ soldier) to the deep end they all cheered for me and encouraged meto make my way back. I cannot express the sense of empowerment and accomplishment that I experienced that day. I then learned to wade in the water andactually let go of the wall. I’m still working on my freestyle and one day I may even dive in off the platform. Some of the parents that watched me takelessons were inspired to take lessons themselves!”

In addition to swimming, Tomas and Triston participate in afterschool care, camp, Vacation Fun Club, Parent’s Night Out programs and more. Jean also takesadvantage of Zumba® and Aqua Zumba®. Jean is enthusiastic when she says, “The Y is an extended family to us and we LOVE it there! Each and everyprogram that is offered at the Y is handled with care, commitment and enthusiasm. Everyone there wants you to succeed and reach whatever goal it is thatyou have for yourself or your family”. Because of this, the Sanchez family will continue to be at the Y as often as they can!

With a mission centered on balance, the Y brings individuals and families closer togetherwhile fostering connections through health and wellness programs. Thousands of youth,adults and families receive the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being.

FOR THE LOvE OF CAMPAbout ten years ago, Ian Ruiz Carlile attended Camp Hi-Rock for the first time as acamper. He was fifteen years old and had been to several other camps before but it wasnot until he got to Hi-Rock that he found his home away from home.

He fell in love with the way of life at Hi-Rock – the deeply caring atmosphere, the celebration of silliness,and the diversity of people. He loved the way camp took him out of what he described as “his bubble” – hislife in New York City – and introduced him to a whole new world of friends and perspectives.

A few years later he became a counselor and learned during staff training about the Strong Kids Campaign.When asked to recount what happened that summer, he describes how he felt compelled to make acontribution and resolved to do so. He was not yet at the point in life where he had opened his ownchecking account so every two weeks on payday he hitched a ride to the local bank to cash his paycheck andthe following day would quietly find his way to the new executive director, Jessica Speer-Holmes, and handher some folded bills. This ritual went on all summer with Ian contributing $100 every two weeksthroughout the eight week summer. Those of you familiar with camp counselor wages will understand thatthis was no small sacrifice!

FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

We believe in giving back and supporting our neighbors. For more than 154 years, theY has been developing lifelong skills and fostering emotional well-being in people ofall ages and from all walks of life. We help them learn, grow and thrive.

In the years that have passed since Ian first became a donor to the campaign, hehas continued to contribute significantly to the campaign each year and says hewill always do so, no matter where he is in life. Ian explains that as a camper,“Camp was such a big part of my life and was very giving to me.  While there, Ifound out who I was and everything I could be. I felt like I had an obligation to giveback to the camp which went beyond just working there.”

He feels it is important for all children to have access to camp, especially urbanyouth who rarely have the opportunity to venture out of the city. Ian fondlyremembers a camper named Yarrell who grew up in a city. When Yarrell came toHi-Rock he was fascinated with the frogs he found around camp – the first frogshe had ever seen in real life! He was thrilled by the frogs and ran around showingeveryone a frog he had picked up. Ian feels that kind of thing is so important.“Low income youth in the city would never have an opportunity like that – to catcha frog!”

Ian has several causes that he supports but Hi-Rock will always be the one towhich he feels most compelled to give. When asked how it felt, that first summer,to make such a generous contribution, he responded, “It felt good but that’s notwhy I did it. It was the right thing to do.” Then he added, “I will bring mycheckbook this summer to make things easier.”

1,071 Low-income children made great stridesin closing the education achievement gap throughthe Y’s 3 school-readiness programs, 38 after-school programs and 10 summer camp programswith a special focus on developing reading andwriting skills.

31,977 Youth participated in programsincluding child care, youth sports, summercamping, and Youth in Government, wherecharacter was built and positive values werereinforced.

7,554 Children participated in Y swimminglessons and water safety education programs.

5,500 Children built new relationships andenjoyed learning new skills through our camps.

34,500 Youth and adults participated inhealth, wellness, education, physical activity anddiabetes prevention programs and services.

1,685 People were served when our Y reachedout and helped them through affordable housingservices, including more than 300 children whobenefitted from our family emergency shelter.

1,293 Y friends gave 31,985 hours ofvolunteer service to our community.

$3,000,000 In financial assistance, thanksto the generosity of donors, made sure all in thecommunity had the opportunity to grow strongerthrough membership, sports, swimming, childcare and other life-enriching programs at the Y.

It gives us great pleasure to report on the success of the Central Connecticut Coast YMCA in 2012.With a strong sense of mission and purpose, we celebrate the achievements of our volunteers andstaff in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Here are just a fewof the Y’s accomplishments in 2012:

• 31,977 youth and teens participated in Y programs where the core values of caring,honesty, respect, and responsibility were modeled and taught.

• Great strides were made in closing the education achievement gap for 1,071 low-incomechildren through the Y’s 3 school-readiness programs, 38 after-school programs, and 10summer camp programs with a special emphasis on developing reading and writing skills.

• 7,554 youth participated in Y swimming lessons and water safety education programs.

• 34,500 youth and adults participated in health, wellness, education, physical activity, anddiabetes prevention programs and services.

• With an excellent team of social workers and inventory of 415 apartments, the Y and ourpartners made great strides in reducing chronic homelessness.

• 1,293 Y volunteers donated 31,985 hours of their time to help others.

• $3MM in financial assistance was provided to 5,967 financially disadvantaged kids,families, and adults enabling participation in important Y programs and services.
