turba Medical College, Manipal and did his ob-servership under the watchful eyes of Dr Sadhana Desai.Later he also went to Cardiff Assisted Reproduction Cen-tre, Wales. He acknowledges the contribution of histeachers Dr Pratap Kumar and Dr Sadhana Desai forlighting this spark of fertility management in him. Forhim, they are not mere teachers but also guide, mentor,friend and philosopher. Care IVF started in 2005 as a bond of friendship be-tween Dr Mukesh Sirohia, a Radiologist, Mrs Sunaina Bi-hani, Director of Pulse Diagnostics & Dr Rajeev Agarwal. All of them had a common vision ofproviding the best of Infertility treatment services underone roof in Bengal. This field is so special for him because, while everybranch of medicine has something to offer to thehuman race but it’s only the field of fertility that helpscreate new life. When he stands in the embryology labo-ratory, he feels the magic of nature all around him. Hefeels fortunate to have been given the opportunity touse the knowledge to help others. According to him, there is a long list of myths associatedwith infertility and it is important to clear the doubtsaround them. Some of these are:• Most people tend to believe infertility is a “femaleproblem” but in reality female problems account onlyfor about 30% cases. • Some believe that “one should just keep trying natu-rally” and they will succeed in getting a child. In reality,however, the longer the duration of married life withoutgetting a child, the greater are chances of the problembeing unresolved. • It is widely believed that since so many fat women whoget pregnant thus “weight has nothing to do with fertil-ity.” In reality higher weight means lesser fertility andgreater rate of miscarriage.• Another myth is that “if you have had a baby naturallyonce, conceiving the second time will never be a prob-lem.” In reality, there are scores of couples who have hada successful childbirth the first time, yet have problemsconceiving the second time. Surprisingly, the secondtime, problems are as dramatic as no eggs or no sperms.He says IVF, like any other treatment, poses a few risksbut they are usually so small that there is no point wor-rying about them. But in IVF one needs to be aware ofOvarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). In thin in-dividuals with polycystic ovaries, too many eggs some-times form despite average doses of injections used inIVF. The problem is self limiting and disappears from thesystem, without any long term sequel in about 7-10days.According to him, Care IVF is different from other IVFcenters because it looks after patients’ problems at threelevels - Personal, Professional and Financial - to resolvethem.• At a personal level, Care IVF takes pride in providinggreat personal attention on patients. Currently they produce more than1500 samples per month. • They run two of their own surrogate homes in the city.They also run the Kolkata Surrogacy and Oocyte Bankwhich is one of the largest Oocyte Donor Bank in this re-gion.• They also run a comprehensive ultrasound depart-ment with two full time radiologists. After having tried for a year (6months if they are over 35) without result, the coupleshould see a fertility expert.The patient and the doctor are equally responsible forsuccess of treatment. The patient needs to meet thedoctor half way. While the doctor will do his best by con-ducting the right investigations, prescribing the correctmedication and giving the best guidance, the coupleshould maintain normal health, lose weight if needed,detox, go off alcohol and smoking and take medicinesregularly.A patient must chose an IVF clinic which has trans-parency in its practice. The centre must share details oftests, injections used in IVF, embryology, videos of anyprocedures like hysteroscopy etc.Among the successful and challenging cases is that of acouple from USA that had failed 5 IVF cycles. His casewas taken up as a challenge. They firstly performed anoperative hysteroscopy and made subtle corrections inher uterus which increased the volume and receptivity.The couple was lucky enough to get a pregnancy in thevery first attempt and delivered a healthy baby.Another case was of a couple having failed multiple IVFcycles in Bangladesh. Investigations indicated every-thing was normal. They realized there might be subtleproblems with the embryos and took this couple up forPre Genetic Screening of embryos before embryo trans-fer. Despite this the couple failed the first embryo trans-fer but the very next attempt led to success and theywere rewarded with twins.After a day’s hectic schedule, family time is a greatstress buster for him. He spends a lot of time with histwo kids playing games, reading and discussing books,watching movies together or just lazing around. Openwater diving is a passion in the family and so is takingshort frequent holidays.
