Building up a phonesystem

You can add further handsets orDeskphones to your base stations tobuild up a comprehensive and easy-to-use cordless telephone system.

Most Diverse base stations can have upto 6 handsets or Deskphones registeredto them (the Diverse 2-Line andDiverse ISDN will register 8). You canregister your Diverse Deskphone at upto three base stations.

EXAMPLE OF CONFIGURATION WITH DIVERSE

ISDNIntroduction Your Diverse Deskphone has been designed for ease of useand made to the high standards set by BT.

Please read the instructions carefullybefore use and retain this user guidefor future reference.

Your Diverse Deskphone is designed foruse with a Diverse telephone system. It must be registered to an existing basestation before it will work.

This guide explains the basic featuresof the Diverse Deskphone. For morecomprehensive instructions see yourmain Diverse user guide. The instructionsfor using a Diverse Deskphone are thesame as using a Diverse 2000 ExecutiveHandset. If you have a Diverse 2-Lineor ISDN base station, you should alsofollow the more detailed instructionsfor the Executive Handset as describedin the user guides that are suppliedwith the base station.

Important information

1. Do not use any power supply otherthan the one provided with your telephoneunit (supplied BT unit C39280-Z4-C66).Use of other power supply units maycause irreparable damage to yourtelephone; it will invalidate your warrantyand the approval given to the apparatus.

2. Research has shown that in certaincases medical equipment can be affectedby cordless telephones. A distance of at least one metre should therefore beobserved between the telephone andmedical equipment. Also follow anyspecial instructions from the institutionin which the product is to be used.

3. Diverse telephone systems can alsointerfere with other electrical equipmente.g. answering machines, TV and radiosets, clock/radio alarms and computers,if placed too close. To avoid risk ofinterference place the unit at least onemetre away.

4. If you wear a hearing aid please notethat a humming noise may result fromthe radio signals sent between the basestation and handset.

5. There is a slight chance that yourphone could be damaged by an electricalstorm. We recommend that you unplugyour Diverse Deskphone from the mainspower during storms.

6. Do not use the unit in bathrooms, nearfire or water, or in areas where there isa danger of explosion.

7. Clean the Diverse Deskphone with adamp (not wet) cloth or antistatic wipe.Never use a dry cloth as this may causea static shock.

Insert the telephone power supply leadinto the socket marked on the undersideof the telephone. Put the other end ofthe plug-in power unit into a 220/230Velectricity socket.

For your own safety use only the BT approved plug-in power unit(C39280-Z4-C66) supplied with yourtelephone.

To make and receive calls yourtelephone needs to be positioned withinrange of its base station. The maximumrange inside most buildings is 50 metres.Outside, the range is extended toapproximately 300 metres (the range willvary depending on where your Diversebase station and Diverse Deskphone aresited, and the conditions within yourbuilding). You can set your telephoneto beep if it is not within range. See page 23.

Plan the location of yourDiverse Deskphone

Make sure your Diverse Deskphone iswithin 2 metres of the phone and mainssockets.

Put the connector (at the straight longend of the handset cord) into thesocket marked on the underside of thetelephone. Secure the cord in itsgroove. Insert the other end of the cordinto the handset.

InstallationFollow these steps to set up your Diverse Deskphone ready for use.

In order to ensure that you achieve the maximum range possible with yourDiverse system please note the followingadvice:

Install the base station on a centrallocation in your home or office. Avoidplacing the base station or Deskphone:

• Behind metal doors.• Under the stairs.• Behind heavy furniture or cabinets.• In rooms with thick or metal walls.• Near other electrical equipment, as it

may generate electrical interference.• In the bathroom or other damp rooms.

These locations will reduce the optimumrange between the base station and theattached handsets/Deskphones.

Please see the chapter on Registeringyour Diverse Deskphone with a basestation.

Press OK. After a short while allavailable telephone extensionnumbers will be displayed.

KEYPAD Enter one of the extensionnumbers using the keypad. The telephone is now registeredas the extension number youhave chosen. The Deskphonewill beep once and briefly flashINT plus its extension number onthe display. To confirm successfulregistration, check that the basenumber, eg. Base 1, has stoppedflashing.

Registering with Diverse 2-Line and ISDN base stations

If your Diverse Deskphone has not beenregistered previously to other basestations, the display will show: REGISTER?If REGISTER? is not displayed, firstlyselect the REGISTER option from theSETTINGS menu, then select the basestation number you wish to register itwith, then follow the instructions below:

Press OK.

CODE Enter the base station code(default 0000).

Press and release the smallgreen LED button on the front ofthe base station (using a penciltip). This will flash duringregistration. You now have up to1 minute to register yourDeskphone.

The procedure opposite de-registers the Diverse Deskphonefrom your base station. However,on completing this procedure itis also necessary to de-registerthe telephone from the basestation using the base stationPIN code.

You can leave a menu withoutsaving any changes or settingsby simply lifting (or replacing)the handset. Alternatively, pressthe LOUDSPEAKER button twice.

To return to a previous screen,press the GO BACK optionbutton.

Your Deskphone offers a menu-drivendisplay. You enter the menu lists byusing the MENU button. The optionbuttons below the display allow you toselect the options within each menuand make adjustments to their settings.

INT Sets up an internal connection.

Your Diverse DeskphoneMenu Display

Please noteWhen you are using the menu to

create new settings or change the set-up(using the SERVICE option), the

loudspeaker button lights to indicate that the phone is in use. If someone

tries to call you whilst you are changingthe settings/service options, the

Deskphone will not ring, but all otherextensions will ring instead.

If the Deskphone is the only phoneregistered with the base station, the

caller will hear an engaged tone.

Please noteOnce a selection in the menu has beenmade, and no other selection is madewithin c. 25 seconds, the Deskphone

will return to idle state.

Making and receiving external calls

With the Deskphone in idle stateit is possible to store any redialnumber into its phonebook.

Press REDIAL. Use the UP orDOWN option to highlight therequired number.

Press ACTIVATE.

Press DOWN to select COPY NUMBER.

Press OK. The display showsNAME and the redial telephonenumber. The cursor flashes foryou to input a name.

KEYPAD Using the alphabet letters on thekeypad (press once for the firstletter, twice for the second letter,three times for the third letterand four times for the fourthletter) input the name of the person whose number you wishto store. (Press BACK andFORWARD to move through thecharacters on the display andDELETE to cancel mistakes.) To enter a blank space betweentwo names, press the 0 button.

Transferring external calls

You can easily transfer calls betweenhandsets. On most Diverse handsetsthis is done by pressing INT followed bythe extension number you wish to call.Generally, you can replace your receivereither before or after the transferred callhas been picked up. For moreinformation please see your base stationguide.

During an external call

Press the MENU button andselect internal call.

Select the extension number towhich you wish to transfer thecall.

Replace the handset on the base.

Press the MENU button andselect INT. Your caller will be onhold and will hear music.

Using the Phonebook

Your Diverse Deskphone has aPhonebook which stores up to 100names and numbers in the memory(the longer the name, the morememory will be used). In line 1 (Name)a maximum of 16 characters can beentered. In lines 2 and 3 (Tel. number)a maximum of 32 digits can be stored.You can use the Phonebook to look upnumbers and then dial them directly.

When moving through the MENUoptions remember, if you wish toescape a MENU altogether, press theLOUDSPEAKER button twice or lift and replace the handset on the cradle. To return to a previous MENU pressGO BACK.

To use an upper case letter press the ✱ button each time.

Quick call transferAfter dialling the other handset, you

can immediately press the END CALLbutton or place the handset back on thecharger and the call will be transferredstraight through. If the other handset is already engaged or does not answer the call within 30 seconds, the call will

be returned to your handset.

Quick call transferWhen the called extension rings, youcan transfer the call immediately by

pressing the END CALL button, but if it is not answered within 30 seconds it

will be returned to your extension.

Additional Features

If you enter an incorrect PINnumber whilst changing yourPIN, the display branches back toHandset Settings and you have towork through the process again.

Security

As a digital phone system, yourDiverse provides excellentsecurity features against others‘listening in’ to your calls. Youcan also prevent others fromchanging your Deskphonesettings, and your phonebookentries. Each phone needs to beregistered with the base station.To do this you need to know anduse the system code.

The default setting for both theDeskphone PIN and system codeis 0000.

To change the system code,please refer to your base stationuser guide.

If you change your DiverseDeskphone PIN, please keep anote of it in the box provided atthe front of this book.

PIN numbers can be up to eightdigits long, and can consist of anycombination of the numbers 0-9.0-9

Quickdial Number

A Quickdial number can be stored inyour Diverse Deskphone so that whenyou lift the handset, the Quickdialnumber is automatically dialled. This canbe useful, for instance, if you wish achild or babysitter to be able to contactyou immediately just by lifting the handset and pressing any key.

Press MENU.

Select PHONE LOCK and press OK.

CODE Enter PIN (default 0000) andpress OK.

Select DSS NUMBER from the menuand press OK. Display will showDSS NUMBER.

KEYPAD Enter the number you wish tostore as your Quickdial number.

Baby Alarm

The baby alarm sets up aconnection between twotelephones registered to thesame base. When a noiseregisters in the first telephone,the second one rings. If thecall to the second telephone isanswered, conversation ispossible. The standard settingfor this service is OFF.

The standard setting for thesensitivity level of this alarmis 2. If you wish to change thesensitivity, see page 25.

The baby alarm will not workin conjunction with call barring.If one of the telephones youare using requires batteries,they must be fully chargedand the handset in the ‘babyroom’ must not be placed in acharger, as this will cover themicrophone.

Press the MENU button.

Select PHONE LOCK and press OK.

CODE Enter PIN (default 0000) andpress OK.

Use UP or DOWN to select DSS NUMBER from the menu andpress OK.

How to use the shortcutfunction

Press the SHORTCUT button (a list of names of previouslycreated shortcuts will bedisplayed. If this is the firstshortcut you are creating, thedisplay will be empty).

Press OK. An edit screen willappear which has a name fieldand a shortcut field. The wordNAME flashes as a prompt to entera name for the shortcut.

Shortcut function

Your Diverse 2000 Deskphone has ashortcut button which gives you accessto a shortcut menu. In the shortcutmenu you can store frequently usedfunctions as shortcuts which can beaccessed when the phone is in idlestate or on-line.

Each shortcut corresponds to a buttonsequence which is saved under ashortcut name and can then be retrievedfrom the list of shortcut names, just likea directory entry.

The shortcut sequence will now start and will continueautomatically through thesequence prompting the user input such as PIN number of aninternal number if required.

Editing

Highlight EDIT ENTRY.

Press OK. The shortcut nameand content will be displayed.The shortcut name will be flashingwith the edit cursor at the end ofthe line.

Use LEFT and RIGHT to move the cursor,LEFT to delete the character tothe left of the cursor, the keypadbuttons to insertdigits and ACTIVATE button togo to another menu to allowinserting a function.

Press ACTIVATE.

SavingHighlight SAVE ENTRY and pressOK, (or highlight CANCEL thenpress OK to abort editing andreturn to the screen listing theshortcuts.

DeletingHighlight DELETE ENTRY andpress OK. The display will confirmthe entry has been deleted.

Press the MENU button to return to idle state.

Maintenance

If you have to return yourDiverse Deskphone

Pack it securely, preferably in theoriginal packaging. We can not takeresponsibility for goods damaged intransit.

General

Simply clean the telephone with adamp (not wet) cloth or antistaticwipe. Never use a dry cloth as thismay cause static shock.

Service

Within the warranty periodIf you experience a problem with yourDiverse Deskphone you should contactthe Diverse Helpline on 0845 7908070.Calls are charged at local call rates. If the problem is not remedied, you willbe advised to contact your originalpoint of purchase. Some suppliers offerextended warranty schemes for coveroutside the initial 12-month period.Please ask them for details.

Outside the warranty periodIf your Diverse Deskphone needs repairafter the warranty period has ended,the repair must meet the approvalrequirements for connection to thetelephone network. We recommend thatyou call the Diverse Helpline on 08457908070 for a list of our recommendedrepair agents.

To register your Deskphone, see page 8.Check that the power cable is connectedto the telephone unit and switched on atthe wall socket.

Check that the phone is within range ofa base station to which it is registered.

Also check that the base station isconnected to the power point andswitched on at the wall socket.

The telephone does not ringThe ringer volume may be set too low.Adjust the ringer volume by followingthe instructions on page 22.

Telephone beepsIf ‘Search Station’ is flashing, check thatyou are in range of your base station.

Buzzing noise on my radio, TV,answering machine or computerDiverse is too close, causing interference.Move it another metre away.

The radio signals from thetelephone to the base station maycause unpleasant interference forpeople with hearing aids.

Emergency CallsThe emergency services can be contactedin the UK by dialling 999, or by dialling112, which is valid in any country thatis a member of the European Community.If your Diverse base station is connectedto a switchboard, you can still dial theemergency services direct on 999. This number will connect you even if callbarring has been set, but YOU MUSTDIAL 999 BEFORE LIFTING YOURHANDSET FROM THE TELEPHONEUNIT.

Please note: Some switchboards can notdial out during a power failure.

If you have a problem, the followingsimple solutions may provide theanswer.

No display appearsCheck that the telephone is switchedon. Check that the power unit is pluggedin properly.

No dial toneCheck that the handset cord is pluggedinto the handset and the telephone unit.Check that the base station is switchedon. If other telephones or handsets areregistered on the same base, the outsideline may already be in use. Wait until thecall is finished and try again.

‘Search Station’ is flashing on the display or you can not link upwith the base station?Check that your Deskphone isregistered to a base station.

Connecting to switchboardsThe Diverse Deskphone is onlyapproved for use with a base which iscompatible with switchboards, includingthose which do not provide secondaryproceed indication. If you would like alist of suitable switchboards, contactthe Diverse Helpline on 08457908070. If you do have a compatibleswitchboard, it can not be guaranteedthat the telephone will operatecorrectly under all possible conditionsof connection. If you have anydifficulties call the Diverse Helpline on0845 7908070.

Generally, Diverse systems can beconnected to any switchboard where asimple modern telephone can be usedto make and receive calls. The Diversesystem is suitable for connection toswitchboards which return secondaryproceed indication.

EnvironmentYour Diverse Deskphone should bekept free of dust, moisture, hightemperature and vibration. It shouldnot be exposed to direct sunlight. Donot stand it on carpets or othersurfaces which generate fibres, orplace it in locations which prevent thefree flow of air over its surfaces.

ApprovalThis additional piece of equipment forDiverse base stations has beenapproved in accordance with theEuropean directive 91/263/EECTelecommunications Terminals. Thistelephone satisfies the requirements ofthe EU directive.

WarningThe apparatus is only designed to beoperated in a normal office or domesticenvironment where the relativehumidity does not exceed 75%. It should not be used in bathrooms ornear water.
