Many years ago, when in den-tal school, the professor was givingus a few pointers on practice man-agement. He referred to such thingsas whether people would try to savetheir teeth or just have them re-moved. He also talked about peoplechoosing less expensive treatmentsover more ideal ones. He linked it towhat he called the “dental IQ” ofthe general population. If people asa whole in one area or another ofthe country had regular dental visitsand repaired their teeth when nec-essary, rather than have them pulled,he would say they had a high dentalIQ. If people realized the value ofgood dental health

and sought for it, they had ahigh dental IQ. He went on to braghow the mid-west and the eastwhere the original dental schoolswere founded and where more edu-cational opportunities and wealthwere, people had higher dental IQ’s.

He went on to say that these peoplewould more readily accept your (thedentists) treatment than people in thewest. These people would brushbetter and maintain their dental workbetter as well. His comments mademe and about twenty- five of we

dental students from the westernstates sink into our seats a little whenhe told us how low a dental IQ peoplein the areas where we were going topractice had in general. Not as badas Arkansas, he said, where you

would be hard pressed to find 10teeth in most peoples’ heads.

When I started to practice Idid find a difference in dental IQ’sbetween people in Chicago andpeople in Utah. Utahan’s weremuch lower. There were no so-cial programs like Chips or Med-icaid to help with lower incomepeople and families. As the yearshave passed, people are betterabout their dental health in gen-eral. Those without insurancebudget their income to includedental care. I believe generallydentistry as a whole has educatedthe public to the benefits of goodoral health. For social reasonspeople have care more about theirsmile, their breath etc.

So bravo people of Utah.You’ve come a long way in el-evating your dental IQ.

The Battle AtPicacho Pass

On February 14 ,1862, President JeffersonDavis of the ConfederateStates of America proclaimedthe establishment of the Con-federate Territory of Arizona.He appointed M. H. McWilleas at torney-general . Mr.McWille had already written:

“The stores of Arizona areimmense, and I am decidedlyof the opinion that the gameis worth the ammunition …[An] expedition would relieveTexas, open communicationto the Pacific, and break theline of operations … designedto circumvallate the south.”

Almost immediately abill was introduced in theU.S. Congress to do the samefor the Union, but the southwas already moving soldiersto take the territory. On Feb-ruary 27, two hundred Con-

federate Texans under thecommand of Captain SherodHunter en te red Tucson .There were no signs of op-posi t ion , but many wereaware that some residentshad slipped quietly across theborder into Mexico. Still, theUnionist Army still held FortYuma, as it had for morethan twenty years, and hadbeen warned by the NativeAmericans in the region ofthe occupation of Tucson.

Colonel Joseph R.West had been stationed onthe banks of the river withhis garrison to protect theYuma crossing over the Colo-

rado River.He sent a party of Union

cavalry, under the command

of Capta in Wil l iam P.Calloway, up the Gila Riverto scout the Confederatetroops. At various Pima vil-lages a long the r iver helearned that a small commandof Confederate soldiers un-der Lieutenant Jack Swillinghad been spotted near theriver up-stream. Callowaysent Lieu tenant JamesBarrett with a dozen men toattack and capture them.

Swilling and his menretreated, having found fromscouts that Barrett was closeat hand, but the two groupsmet at Picacho Pass a spotalong the road from Yuma toTucson that passes near adormant volcano cone knowas Picacho Peak.

In the sk i rmishBarrett and two of his menwere killed, but the Confed-erates loss was two killed andthree captured.

This event as theonly Civil War battle that oc-curred in Arizona. It is some-times called the westernmostba t t le of the Civ i l War,fought on April 15, 1862.Although in its casualties itmight be called a Confeder-ate triumph, in its strategic

resu l t s i t amounted to aUnion victory, for the Con-federates immediately de-

cided upon a retreat fromArizona back toward the RioGrande.

When Carleton ar-rived in Tucson in early Juneof that year, several stepswere taken to assert the au-thority of the federal govern-ment in Arizona. His open-ing statement made that clear:“Now, in the present chaoticstate in which Arizona isfound to be, with no civil of-ficers to administer the laws,indeed, with an utter absenceof all civil authority, and withno security of life and prop-erty within its borders, it be-comes the duty of the under-signed to represent the au-thority of the United Statesover the people of Arizona …until such time as the Presi-dent of the United Statesshall otherwise direct.”

This is Part 3 of the seriesof articles about the history, properdisplay, handling, and disposing ofthe American flag. Last month Iwrote about the proper way to dis-pose of a flag and how to showthe appropriate respect while do-ing so. This month I will be de-tailing how to correctly display ournational emblem.

Traditionally we only fly theflag during daylight hours and dur-ing good weather. The flag maybe flown during darkness if thereis a light shining on the flag. Itmay be flown in inclementweather, rain, snow, or during awind storm if it is a nylon flag (all-weather flag).

When raising the flag, it shouldbe hoisted briskly without pausinguntil it reaches the pole’s peak.When taking down the flag, it shouldbe lowered ceremoniously showingrespect, without pauses until it canbe controlled by those lowering it.

When the flag is to be flownat half-staff the flag should be hoistedto its peak for a moment and thenlowered to the half-staff position. Atthe end of the day it should be raisedto its peak before lowering it. Whenthe flag is being displayed on Me-morial Day it should be flown at half-staff until noon and then raised tothe top of the staff for the remain-der of the day.

lowered, or passing in review all per-sons should show it respect. Civil-ians should stand still with their righthand over their heart until the flag israised to the top of the pole or whenbeing lowered until those loweringthe flag take control of it. Those inuniform should render the proper

hand salute. Veterans not in uni-form may also salute the flag. If theflag is passing in review everyoneshould show their respect until theflag passes them.

No flag should be flown abovethe American flag. The flag shouldalways be in the position of greaterprominence or honor. When flagsare flown on two or more adjacentpoles, the American flag should beflown higher than all other flags.

When used on a speaker’splatform the flag is to be displayedabove and behind the speaker.When displayed on a pole, the flagshould be placed in a position of

prominence and to the speaker’sright as he faces the audience. Allother flags should be placed to thespeaker’s left.

When the flag is used to cover

a casket, the blue field of stars (theunion), should be at the head andover the left shoulder of the de-ceased. The flag should never belowered into the grave or allowed totouch the ground.

The 50-star flag is the officialflag, designated by President DwightD. Eisenhower in 1959. However,any flag that lacks the full 50 starsmay be displayed as long as it is ingood condition. It should be treated

with the same respect and rules asthe official 50-star flag.

In general, your right to dis-play the United States flag is pro-tected by federal law via the Free-

leaving her with the Colonelone of her escorts told her shewas under arrest for mas-querad ing as amale . Shocked ,that she had beenfound out so soonshook her resolve.The Colonel was not harsh,but consoling, counseledLizzie that if she wished tomake a difference in the war

she should consider taking ajob as a hospital attendant,and be attached to his com-

mand. In effect Lizzie told theColonel that she would ratherdie than spend time in the fieldhospitals. Lizzie was taken toPark Barracks and confinedfor a brief stay, before beingreleased and sent on her way.Lizzie missed her blue uni-form, feeling uncomfortable inthis simple shift she had re-ceived upon release. The army

had allowed her to keep herboots, unable to find appro-priate female footwear at theprison. Lizzie had no prob-lem liberating shirt and pantsfrom willing clotheslines. Thecountryside seemed peaceful,the birds singing and newgrowth everywhere. It did nottake long for Lizzie’s practiceeye and glib tongue to join upagain with this unsuspectingarmy. ing the conflict.As a sign of appreciation to the re-maining World War II veterans, theWestern Sky Aviation Warbird Mu-seum invites all WWII veterans toattend the dance for free — and bringone guest. The veterans will be hon-ored in a special ceremony early inthe evening, said event organizerRebecca Edwards.

“It is imperative that we rec-ognize and revere these World WarII veterans while we still can,”Edwards said. “The war was foughtmore than 70 years ago and it is tothese men and women that we oweour freedom.”

There’s a new partner intown. FamilySearch has addedGeneanet (en.geneanet.org) asits fifth partner site. Geneanet(France), joins Ancestry(U.S.), FindMyPast (U.K.),American Ancestors (U.S.) andMyHeritage (Israel) in provid-ing 3.5 times more record ac-cess than just usingFamilySearch. According toFamilySearch Geneanet is “thelargest genealogical website incontinental Europe, with morethan 4 billion individual names,700,000 family trees, and help-ful blogs and other informationto make the search for yourancestors easier.”

The first thing you needto do is create a sign-in ac-count. Those withFamilySearch access need toenter through theFamilySearch partner site andthen create your sign-in. Ahelpful hint is to keep your sign-in information for all yourwebsites in an address bookwhere the websites are orga-nized alphabetically making thepasswords easy to find.

Geneanet has many fam-ily trees (more than 700,000according to FamilySearch). Itis easy to add yours. (1) Clickthe Family Tree Tab at the topand (2) upload a GEDCOM.You can adjust the look of thetree and set your privacy set-tings. After you have your treeuploaded, you can add photos,sources, and other items of in-

terest.Geneanet has an extensive

Iwent to the Search tab and choseGenealogy Library from thedrop-down menu. In the searchbar, I just entered the last name“Sleeper.” It pulled up 34,785Sleeper references in Newspa-pers, 25,793 references inBooks, 228 references in Maga-zines, and 51 Obituaries. Mostof these Sleeper references re-ferred to my Sleeper family inNew Hampshire. A gold minefor my book.
