make arrangements to have this done.
QUESTIONS ABOUT HALLOWEEN PARTIES: At this time of the year,
parents start to ask about classroom Halloween parties. The school provides a party on
the evening of Friday, October 21 in conjunction with our BOOKFAIR. This is an all-school
family party. Children may come in costume as well as their parents for a great time of
games and haunted house etc. provided by our PTO. A flyer will be going out next week
about our annual “BOOBOOBOOBOO-RIFIC “PARTY. See more information about Boo-rific
on the following pages.
Classroom parties will be on Monday, October 31. These do not involve costumes. There will be no after-
school programming that night.
NOVEMBER 8- ELECTIONS DAY +
SCHOOL DISTRICT REFERENDUM DAY!
DON’T FORGET TO VOTE
OUR VERY OWN NORTHWOODS COMMUNITY
INFORMATIONAL SESSION:
TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18 7:30 PM in the Library Northwoods Parents are invited to an informal session lasting about 20-30 minutes that will provide
information about the referendum coming up, right after the PTO meeting. Come as you are to ask questions,
get answers and learn the facts about why the ECASD is having a referendum. The outcome of the referendum
will have affects. If you feel you don’t know enough about this referendum coming up, which will affect
Northwoods, please be sure to attend.
CHECK OUT THESE BASIC FACTS:
• Eau Claire is the 8th largest school district in Wisconsin and ranks 272 out of 424 school districts
in spending.
• In 2015-2016 the state average for per pupil spending was $10,312;
• Eau Claire’s spending per pupil was $9,894 for a difference of $418. I.E. our children in Eau Claire
receive $418 less than the state average in other districts.
• If we multiply 418 by the 11,300 estimated students enrolled in the ECASD, that would provide an
additional $4,723,400 to the district.
• Please understand that this situation is because Wisconsin does not fund all school districts equally.
• Furthermore, school districts are limited in what they can spend by a REVENUE CAP that was set by the
state based on what districts were spending in 1993.
• Revenue caps were put in place to control increases in property taxes and state aid. So what we are
receiving now is based on 1993.
FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE ECASD REFERENDUM, PLEASE VISIT THE WEBSITE AT:
www.ecasd.us/referndum2106 OR PICK UP INFORMATION IN OUR SCHOOL ENTRY.
OTHER INFORMATION SESSIONS FOR ALL EAU CLAIRE VOTERS ARE BEING HELD AT THESE SCHOOLS.
*Tuesday, October 18, Meadowview Elementary 6:30-7:30 PM
*Thursday, November 3, Locust Lane Elementary Cafeteria 6:30-7:30 PM

THE ODYSSEY OF THE MIND DISTRICT PROGRAM FOR KIDS This year the Gifted Education Department will once again provide students the opportunity to participate in
programming to help develop the creative, dramatic, and artistic talents for students in all grade levels within
the Eau Claire Area School District. Students have the option to participate in an after school program called
Odyssey of the Mind.
Odyssey of the Mind is the original creative problem solving program and one of the largest and most
successful worldwide! It was founded 36 years ago and has been active in Wisconsin for over 30 years.
Odyssey of the Mind in the Eau Claire Area School District relies heavily on parent volunteers to provide
coaching for elementary teams. If you are interested in forming and/or coaching a team at your elementary
school, contact me for more information. I can coordinate a parent night to help recruit more coaches and
students for teams.
All teams attend the state competition in Madison on March 18, 2017. Transportation is provided and the
celebration is awesome.
District training for Odyssey of the Mind coaches will be held November 5 from 9 – 11:30 a.m. at Northstar
Middle School.
Contact Pam Cernocky, District Odyssey of the Mind Coordinator, for more information at 715-852-3110.

WALK TO SCHOOL DAY—we seem not to be able to pick the best days weather wise, but we
had a surprisingly great turn out. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO BRAVED THE WET WEATHER AND HELPED
US WALK AND ENJOY A START TO A NORTHWOODS DAY. UWEC BluGold foot ball players joined us on our
walk and parents, kids and staff had a wonderful time. It is awesome to see our friends again. Many hugs,
and lots of fun.
One little boy who evidently really liked having the football players here exclaimed that this was “the best day
of his life”. We love our school and we love all of those in it, who make it so special. I will share more pictures
next week. Thank you parent, Jessica Klesmit, for the photo below. Staff holds up a banner signed by
Northwoods students expressing their love for the school! Julie Schaller- art teacher was instrumental in
providing this for our kids. We all work together to make it great!
