The Illinois State Archives is pleased to announce that a joint Archives/Illinois State Genealogical Society (ISGS) project to create an online database for Physicians Registers is up and running. The new genealogical resource site can be found on the State Archives web- site under “Databases” or by going directly to: https://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/departments/archives / databases/physearch.html . The Illinois State Archives’ Physicians Database is an index containing the names of more than 62,700 physicians and surgeons who registered for licensure with the Illinois State Board of Health and the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation. The dates of the database span from 1877 to 1937. The types of information one can find on the database include: physicians’ names, certificate number, year of license, and residence and location of practice. Physician names can be searched by last name and also by first name, as long as the first two letters of the last name are also entered. Thanks to the hard work of the Department of Information Technology of the Illinois Secretary of State’s office, each name on the database is directly linked to the scanned image found in the register. This means that researchers can look directly at the record.
