For the Degree of Bachelor of MusicEducationA minimum of 130 hours of credit is required for graduation. Thiscurriculum prepares its graduates for teaching music in gradeskindergarten through twelve. For teacher education requirementsapplicable to all curricula, see the Council on Teacher Education (https://cte-s.education.illinois.edu/dotnet/webpages/webpage.aspx). Studentscomplete a concentration in instrumental (band or strings), choral,technology, or general music education.

In order to be recommended for licensure, candidates are required tomaintain a UIUC cumulative grade-point average of 2.5, content area(music courses) GPA of 2.75, and professional education course GPA of3.0 (A=4.0). Candidates should consult the music education handbook,their advisor, or the Council on Teacher Education for a listing of coursesused to compute these grade-point averages.

Illinois state law and Council on Teacher Education policy require that allcandidates for teacher education programs pass the Illinois CertificationTest System Test of Academic Proficiency (TAP), or submit a compositeACT+Writing score of 22 (plus a combined English/Writing score of atleast 19 for tests prior to September 2015; or ACT writing score of atleast 16 for tests taken September 2016 or after), or a composite SAT(mathematics and critical reading) score of 1030 (SAT Writing score ofat least 450) before admission. All music education students must earna grade of C- or better in all music and education courses required forlicensure.

2 Student teaching coursework may be taken for 4-8 credits. Eight hoursof student teaching apply toward graduation.
