Our unit pulled off a rather spectacular human-use study (using a combination of Malaysian and unit officers as volunteers) that proved a drug for the prevention of scrub typhus. The second LOM was for 5 years as director of the DoD infectious disease and biological warfare defense program where my staff put in place the DoD AIDS research program and was able to justify record funding for the biologicalwarfare defense program. The 3rd LOM was for my work as deputy director of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington. We received the award for the DoD research laboratory of the year.

Silver Taps Killed on active duty At the time, the 20th TFW, a three-squadron wing of F-100D & F-100F (two-place) aircraft, was headquartered at Royal Air Force (RAF) Station Wethersfield England (RAF Wethersfield) (55th TFS and 77th
TFS), with one of the three squadrons(79th TFS) based at RAF Bentwaters. The three squadrons rotated into Aviano Air Base Italy, Wheelus Air Base Libya and Cigli Air Base Turkey for various mission requirements, including weapons training and nuclear alert duties. Ted was TDY (temporary duty), flying out of Cigli when he went down.
