Working smoke alarms save lives

Fit at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home.

•Testthealarmseverymonth.Neverdisconnectthemortakeoutthebatteriesifanalarmgoesoffbymistake.

•Ifyoucan’tfitalarmsyourself,contactyourlocalfireandrescueservicewhomaybeabletofitthemforyou.

•Mostfiresinthehomehappenatnight,somakesureyouhaveanalarminapositionthatwillwakeyouup,suchasinyourbedroom.

Tips if you have hearing, sight or mobility difficulties

Hearing difficulties

•Ifyouhaveahearingdifficultyyoucanget asmokealarmwhich usesastrobelightandvibratingpads.

•Alternatively,considerlinkingsmokealarmssothatwhenonegoesoff,theyallgooff.

•Intheeventofafire,ifitisdifficultforyoutocall999yourself,askaneighbourtodoitforyou.

•Ifyouhavespecialistequipment,suchasatextphoneorminicom,youcancontacttheemergencyserviceson18000.

Sight difficulties

•Putacolouredstickeronyoursmokealarmifyouhavetroubleseeingittotestit,oraskyourlocalfireandrescueserviceiftheycanprovideacolouredcover.

•Considerfittingbump-ons(alsoknownasplasticblisters)toappliancesasawayofmakingsuretheyareswitchedoffproperly.

•Unplugandthencheckelectricalleadsregularlybytouch.Iftheyarefrayedorfaultydon’tplugtheminorswitchthemon.Ifelectricsaregivingoffaburningsmellturnthemoffandunplugthemimmediately.

•Youmayalsowanttoconsiderplacingatactileindicatoralongyourescaperoutetomakeiteasiertofindtheexit.

Mobility difficulties

•Ifitisdifficulttotestyouralarmsasksomebodytodoitforyou.Youcanalsogetremotecontrolledoreasyaccessalarms,whichcanbetestedfromthewallratherthantheceiling.TheDisabledLivingFoundationcanprovidemoreinformationontheseproducts.

•Ifyouhavetroublemovingaround,considerfittinganintercomwhichwillallowyoutoalertsomeoneintheeventofanemergency.

•Makesureyouhaveeasyaccesstoanymobilityaidsyoumayneed,suchasawalkingstick.

If you use oxygen

•Makesureyouroxygenequipmentisstoredsafelyoutofdirectsunlight,wellventilated,alwaysdryandawayfromheatsources.

•Don’tuseoxygennear nakedflames,including gasandelectriccookers –3metresisasafedistance.

•Forfurtherinformation,contactyouroxygensupplier.

Never smoke or use electrical appliances, such as hairdryers, whilst using oxygen.

If you use an electric blanket

Store electric blankets flat, rolled up or loosely folded to prevent damaging the internal wiring.

•Waterandelectricitydon’tmix,soavoidgettinganelectricblanketwet.Ifyoudo,waituntilitiscompletelydrybeforeusingitagain.

•Neveruseahotwaterbottleandanelectricblankettogether.

•Testelectricblanketseverythreeyears.Your localfireandrescueserviceorAgeUKmaydothisforyouforfree.

•Alwaysfollowthemanufacturer’sinstructions.

Plan an escape route

Think about all possible escape routes in case there’s a fire.

•Itisagoodideatopractiseanescapesothatyoufeelconfidentyoucoulddoit dayornight.

•Keepaphoneinyourbedroomincaseyou needtomakean emergencycall.Ifit’samobile,keepitcharged.

•Makesureexitsarekeptclearandwelllit.

•Makesureyouknowhowyourhouseorpersonalalarmworks,includinganypasswordsorcodes.

Keep keys where you can find them in case you need them in a hurry.

In the event of a fire

Don’t tackle fires yourself. If you can, get out, stay out and call 999.

•Ifyoucan’tcall999yourselfgetaneighbourtodoitforyou.

•Ifyoucan’tgetoutstayinaroomwithashutdoor,windowandphone,ideallyatthefrontofthehouse.

•Putbeddingroundthebottomofthedoortoblockoutthesmoke,thenopenthewindowandshout“HELPFIRE”.Keepawhistlehandyifit’shard toshout.

•Ifyoucan,closeinsidedoorsatnight.Thiswillhelpprevent afirefromspreading.
