field tripSAs a participant in Euro Mine Expo 2014, you will be able to take part in a number of interesting field trips within the region’s vibrant mining district.

June 09 (Monday ): An all-day pre-conference trip to Malå, one of the region’s mining centres and home to several prospecting companies. We’ll visit the Drill Core Archive (up to 3.5 million cores), GeoExpo is the natural meeting place for people in the business and a regional center for sustainable mining development. The famous Sankta Anna underground church in Kristineberg is an ecumenical church located 90 meters below ground.

June 10 (tueSday ): A half-day (08.00-12.00) field trip to the Rönnskär copper smelter, one of the largest copper smelters of its kind in the world. It extracts base and precious metals from mining concentrates and secondary materials like electronic scrap. Its main products are copper, gold, silver, lead, zink clinker and sulphur products. It is located approximately 20 kilometres east of Skellefteå, and has a workforce of 900 people.

The other option is the Kankberg gold and tellurium mine. It was reopened in 2012 after being closed down in the 1990s. After the discovery of the gold and tellurium deposit it was then re-opened. 250 kg of gold was produced during the first year. Kankberg is today 500 m deep. The cut-and-fill method is used here and granite is used as backfill material. The mine employs about 80 people and around 20 contractors and is located 40 kilometres northwest of Skellefteå.
