patroness, Mary Magdalene.

Dear parishioners,

This afternoon (October 19) our Holy Land pilgrimage group visited the excavation site of Magdala, the town of Mary Magdalene, our patron saint. The centerpiece of the project is a synagogue which dates to the time of Jesus. No other place in Israel has the ruins of a first century synagogue.

The scriptures tell us that Jesus went about healing and teaching in the synagogues of Galilee. It is nearly certain that we walked in the place where Jesus walked; where he did his ministry. Magdala was a successful fishing village. It is known that from there fish was shipped to Rome, a journey that took nearly two weeks. It is here, likely, that Mary met Jesus. Scripture tells us that, from her, seven devils were cast out by Jesus. It is likely that once cured, Mary of Magdala assisted Jesus in his ministry. She provided for Jesus and his followers, as a woman who herself followed him closely.

We know that Mary of Magdala was given the grace to be the first one to announce that Jesus was risen from the dead.

The twelve disciples that Jesus chose for his apostles are so prominent that it can happen we forget about the many other followers, Mary Magdalene being one. Each disciple has a place in the ministry of Jesus. Likewise, today each disciple, each of us, has a place of ministry in the church. The Bishop, priests and deacons can be the ones often recognized for their calling, but certainly are not the only ones with a ministry.

Saint Mary Magdalene reveals to us the way that God works. She was one of the many women who were a disciple of Jesus. She had been healed by him, and she left everything to follow him. At his death, she simply wanted to continue to serve Jesus by ensuring his dead body was properly anointed. In that moment God gave her a ministry she did not expect. She became the first preacher of the gospel. Like Mary Magdalene, let us not seek only the ministry we want but find the ministry God is preparing us for.

Esta tarde (19 de Octubre), junto a nuestro grupo de peregrinación visitamos el sitio de excavación de Magdala, el pueblo de María Magdalena, nuestra Santa Patrona (?). La atracción principal del proyecto es una sinagoga que data del tiempo de Jesús. No hay ningún otro lugar en Israel que tenga las ruinas de una sinagoga del primer siglo.

Las Escrituras nos dicen que Jesús iba curando y enseñando en las sinagogas de Galilea. Es casi seguro que caminamos en el mismo lugar donde Jesús caminó; y donde hizo su ministerio. Magdala era un pueblo exitoso en la pesca. Se sabe que desde allí, el pescado se enviaba a Roma, un viaje que toma casi dos semanas. Es aquí, probablemente, donde María y Jesús se conocieron. El Obispo, los sacerdotes y los diáconos, pueden ser los que son reconocidos muchas veces por su llamada, pero verdaderamente no son los únicos con un ministerio.

Santa María Magdalena nos revela la manera en que Dios trabaja. Ella era una de las muchas mujeres que eran discípulas de Jesús. Ella fue curada por Él, y dejó todo para seguirlo. The past month has been one full of fun activities, and we are constantly look-ing for more ways to serve the community and grow together as a group. In November, the group has a special opportu-nity to learn from him who humbly shepherds the Diocese of Salt Lake City, Bishop Solis.

The Cathedral of the Madeleine: A Year of Celebrationd

Last month, we featured The Cathedral of the Madeleine: A Year of Celebra-tion, a book put together by a committed group of the Cathedral Tour Guides, highlighting the beauty of this historic building. This month, the book will finally be on sale, beginning November 18th after the 8:30am, 11:00am, and 3:00pm Masses. The book will be on sale Sundays only, and will sell for $30.

This would make a wonderful holiday gift but is fitting for any occasion. There are more than 150 color photos, many of them never before seen in print. It features the stained-glass windows, the elaborate wood carvings, many murals, sculptures, and the marble and mosaic stone works. Many of the photos capture the details difficult to see at a glance of the Cathedral. It also includes much of the history of the Cathedral, dating from the corner-stone laid in 1900.

The book celebrates the 100th Anniversary of the 1918 Renovation of the Ca-thedral, and the 25th Anniversary of the 1993 Restoration and Rededication. Please join us in celebrating our beloved landmark of Salt Lake City.

Opportunities to ServeGratitude is a part of our faith in every capacity; the Catechism of the Catholic Church, in paragraph 1328, explains that the host we receive in Mass is called the “Eucharist, because it is an action of thanksgiving to God. The Greek words eucharistein and eulogein recall the Jewish bless-ings that proclaim — especially during a meal — God’s works: creation, redemption, and sanctification.” In gratitude, we receive Christ’s Body, given freely to us. In the same, we are called to pour ourselves out, giving what we have received.

There are many ways to be generous, and we wanted to take this month as an opportunity to inform you of ways to give of yourself around the parish. For more information about more ministry opportunities around the Cathedral, please contact Ali at amartinez@utcotm.org.

The Good Samaritan Program is a community outreach ministry of the Cathedral. It began underneath the direction of Monsignor Francis Mannion, who was the rector at the time. His very simple mission statement was, “A sack lunch. No questions asked.” From beginning in the basement kitchen of the Cathedral, it has grown to the building on the corner of C St. and South Temple, where it currently serves 300-400 sack lunches per day depending on the season, along with toiletry and clothing items. Some thirty years later, and the Cathedral and GSP are still proud to be carrying the torch, never wavering from the initial vision.

The daily operation is always in need of volunteers—two segments, one being the Back-of-House Lunch Making and Door Hosting. Both are necessary to the mission, and we invite you to humbly consider joining the team. All that is asked is an openness to serving or otherwise interacting with the homeless and disenfranchised in the Salt Lake are. You can make a difference.

Did you know that the Cathedral of the Madeleine has had a women’s ministry for almost as long as there has been a Cathedral of the Madeleine? If you need some proof, look no further than the St. Cecilia window above the organ loft, and you will see it was sponsored by the Altar Society, the name most Catholic women’s ministries used many years ago. Today, our women’s ministry is known as the Cathedral Women’s Society, or more simply CWS.The CWS invites all women of the parish to its gatherings on the third Satur-day of each month. Beginning at 2:00 p.m., our gatherings provide a casual and warm environment where women form friendships and participate in sea-sonal spirituality activities. All women of the parish are welcome to partic-ipate in any CWS event. All events are free, and refreshments are provided.

The CWS’s mission is to support, empower and educate parish women in spirituality, service, and leadership within our parish. Events in support of our mission naturally vary to reflect the interests of our membership and the needs of our parish community. Focusing on our core values of spirituality, service, and leadership, at our October 2018 gathering our group selected a long-term service project: implementation of a volunteer-based respite care program that will provide support for the elderly and their caregivers in our parish community.

Our next gathering is November 17, 2018, in the Cathedral Rectory. In addi-tion to a Thanksgiving prayer service, we will continue discussing our service project and will make plans for Advent. Also, one lucky woman will be able to take home the 2018 Blessed is She Advent devotional “Bearing Light.” We hope to see you there.

Are YOU searching for an opportunity to invest your faith in an action that reflects what Jesus demonstrated as a servant of oth-ers? We have that opportunity for you! It requires a commitment to serve others, a willingness to do so consistently, to love your fellow parishioners and a desire to take the Blessed Sacrament to individuals who are currently not able to attend Mass. YES! We do have a truly meaningful extension of your Catholic Faith.

The current fifteen Cathedral of the Madeleine Eucharistic Min-ister Level IIs are visiting between 35 to 55 other parishioners (Catholics who previously or currently reside in Cathedral bound-aries) each Sunday that truly appreciate receiving Holy Com-munion. These Catholics are located in a variety of settings to include: hospitals, individual homes, assisted living settings, var-ious senior living centers and rehabilitation facilities.

If this sounds like something that would be really meaningful to you, you would need to participate in required training conducted by the Diocese for Eucharistic Minister Levels I and II. These two sessions are three to four hours in length, and are scheduled periodically by the Dioceses throughout the year. We’ll help you get in the classes. Plus, you will need to complete the Diocesan “Safe Environment Training” on line, which takes about 45 to 60 minutes to complete.

Following the “classroom” encounter we will initiate you into “reality” and have you tag along with two or three current Eucha-ristic Ministers in different settings so you can consider and de-termine how you would like to fulfill your ministry and the time commitment possible. We have a number of couples who venture out together and individual women and men. If you have children, five or six years old or older, this ministry can be an extremely beneficial growth experience and enjoyable for all involved.

Patrick Phelan’s Orphans

Perhaps, like me, you may have stood in front of the Visitation window on the west side of the Cathedral and puzzled over the dedication panel: “In Memory of P. Phelanorphans.” Who, or what, is a “P. Phelanorphan”?Part of the answer is on one of the most visible monuments at Mount Cal-vary cemetery, standing at the southern edge of the circle where the clergy and religious are buried. A tall angel marks the grave of Patrick Phelan, an Irish boy who came to the United States in 1849 and followed the Gold Rushers to California in 1850. In 1866 he migrated to the Montana mines, where he met his lifelong business associate, Stephen Hays. In 1872 he moved to Salt Lake City and mined part time at Alta.

It is not known how well he did in mining, but he must have made at least some money, because in June 1873 he opened a store for the miners in Bingham Canyon. Like Levi Strauss in San Francisco, he apparently saw a more reliable prospect for income in mining the miners than mining the mines. Hays sold a business in Salt Lake City and joined Phelan in the partnership Phelan & Hays. The firm became very profitable, not only be-cause of the partners’ business acumen, but also because of Phelan’s well-known frugality. He did have a fondness, though, for secret philanthropies, helping destitute people through anonymous donations administered by Bishop Lawrence Scanlan or his assistant, Fr. Denis Kiely.

Phelan never married, and when he died in 1901 he left a fortune of some $100,000 to the Diocese of Salt Lake City, with the stipulation that most of it be used for support of St. Ann Orphanage and other charitable purposes. The orphanage dated to 1891, when Bishop Scanlan turned his former rectory into a residence and school for children of indigent families who had lost a parent in a mining accident. Mining is an infamously dangerous occupation and the facility met a real need. In 1900, the year before Phelan died, the Kearns family, which had made a fortune in mining at Park City, commissioned Cathedral architect Carl Neuhausen to design an impres-sive new orphanage on 2100 South. Its population by the time of Phelan’s death reached as high as one hundred, so his support must have been most welcome.

When the Cathedral windows were installed in 1906, the Phelan money was found to be more than enough to run the orphanage, so part of it was used to pay for the Visitation window in commemoration of the “P. Phelan Orphans.” The inscription proved to be quite a handful for the glass artist, who was compelled to risk confusion by running the last two words so close together they can easily be read as one.

By the 1950s orphanages had gone out of fashion in favor of foster homes. By the middle of the decade the orphanage was closed, and the facility turned into St. Ann School which is still in operation. Phelan’s work was done, and the remainder of the endowment went to Catholic Charities, which has since become Catholic Community Services.
