Who are we?
MdM IS AN INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN AID
ORGANISATION WHOSE MISSION IS:
• to provide medical care to vulnerable populations who are
victims of conflict, natural disasters or extreme poverty
• to recruit medical and non-medical professionals who are
willing to volunteer their time and expertise
• to “bear witness” to any abuses of human rights, especially thedenial of access or any obstacles to healthcare

HISTORY AND STRUCTURE
• Established in 1980 in France by Dr. Bernard Kouchner (andother French doctors), who was previously a founder of MSF
• It is an ‘Association’ made up of members who are current orex-volunteers; the members vote for the Board
• The Médecins du Monde network consists of 16 organisationsworldwide that mobilise volunteers to join its medical projects
• The international network is co-ordinated by an InternationalSecretariat based in Paris, and runs 174 projects in 51 countrieswith over a thousand volunteers working in the field

Bearing witness
TÉMOIGNAGE – “BEARING WITNESS”
• As well as providing care, Médecins du Monde volunteers“bear witness” to denounce human rights violations and tohighlight obstacles to healthcare
• In this way, we give a voice to people whose stories might nototherwise be heard
• It is a form of “after care” to the medical care that we provide,to ensure that obstacles to healthcare are removed and humanrights abuses are stopped

The MdM UK Office
• Médecins du Monde UK was established 1998, shortly before the Kosovo crisis
• MdM UK supports the world wide work of Médecins du Monde
• In 2003, MdM UK’s Board decided to investigate the viability of launching a healthcare project in the UK
• April 2003, MdM UK moved to Canary Wharf due to the generosity of the Canary Wharf group giving us office space as a donation in kind
• Currently, there are 5 salaried staff and 3 interns in the UK office team

• ‘Domestic’ healthcare projects: initiated in 1986 by MdMFrance. There are now 110 mobile MdM healthcareprojects in France, under the name “Mission France”
• Aim: to assist those marginalised people who cannotget access to mainstream healthcare services
• In 2005, eight European MdM offices running projects.The aim is: to create an ‘European Observatory’ onhealthcare. MdM UK is now the ninth European office.

• January 2006: MdM UK launched its first ‘domestic’healthcare project called Project: London
• Helping vulnerable migrants, homeless people andwomen working in prostitution to get access to theNHS and to mainstream healthcare services

• Providing financial support for MdM’s overseas projects
• Recruiting and sending MdM UK volunteers overseas

including ongoing advocacy about access to healthcare
• Running exploratory missions for new projects

MdM UK’s London to Paris Bike Ride: 12 –15 July 2008
• This is the third MdM UK Bike Ride
• Logistics organised by Classic Tours Ltd
• Three-day challenge starts one week after Tour de France
• Each cyclist is an “ambassador” for MdM UK
• Each cyclist must train hard to cycle 293 km
• Each cyclist must commit to fundraise £1,000 for MdM UK
