Look for the skill level rating of each class. Beginner: Must be able to thread sewing machine and wind bobbin(s) and basic knowledge of the machine you will be using. Must have knowledge of sewing terms, be able to read a pattern, and be capable of performing basic sewing machine techniques. Intermediate: Must have good command of sewing skills, knowledge and operation of sewing machine or serger and sewing techniques, and be able to read and follow pattern instructions without assistance. Advanced: Must be proficient at most sewing techniques in the subject area, including knowledge of and using many sewing machine features.

Tuesday, April 9 A. Coin Quilt with a Little Pizzazz Candy Simms (Beginner Skill Level) Make a quick and easy jelly roll quilt that just LOOKS difficult! Black background makes it look Amish; white background emphasizes the blocks; and a color background is simply beautiful! Use as few as 20 jelly strips to make a 50” x 50” lap quilt or a full jelly roll for a twin size. Make one for yourself, for a gift, or for charity. B. Flower Pot Wall Hanging Debbie Stidham (Beginner Skill Level) Come and join in a beginner level class using raw edge applique. This is a great way to use scraps or leftover jelly roll strips to make a pretty decoration or gift. The class will be fun and low stress. C. Leaf Table Topper Mary Averbeck (Intermediate Skill Level) Create a beautiful intricate leaf, wall hanging or table topper. It looks difficult, but isn’t. The secret is paper-piecing and special sewing techniques which will be taught in this class. Fabric cutting templates are included in the pattern to make cutting fabric easier and efficient. Practice foundation paper piecing, curved piecing, traditional piecing techniques and applique. Class Fee: $25 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: 20” x 40”

D. Chef/Artist’s Apron Sandy Davis (Beginner Skill Level) Are you a sewist who wants to learn garment construction basics? In this class, you will learn seven basic garment construction techniques as you make samples, then put each technique into your project-a chef’s/artist apron. E. Tool Caddy Sharon Finkenbine (Intermediate Skill Level) This compact, stand-up caddy is the ideal tool to keep supplies in one place and can be carried to retreats and classes. It has a lot of pockets that include a place for a small mat, ruler, marking tools and other sewing supplies and has a small attached design wall. The wooden base makes it easy to move when open. G. Panel Magic Angie York (Beginner Skill Level) If your stash looks like mine you have a whole stack of panels that are waiting to be turned into quilts. Turning those panels into a beautiful attic window is easier than you think. With a small amount of yardage and a landscape panel, you will have a completed project in no time at all. H. Hannah’s Quilted Wall Hanging/Table Mat Jennifer Klee (Intermediate Skill Level) This small and charming project can be used as a wall hanging or table mat. A great choice for your favorite charm pack and becoming familiar and working with half square triangles. A good project to practice machine quilting. I. Nesting Fabric Buckets & Microwave Hot Pad Janice Beatty (Beginner Skill Level) Let your creative ideas flow as you design and make 3 nesting fabric buckets! Also in the same class, make a microwaveable hot pad for a bowl. These are good projects to use up some of your stash and scraps. We will use interfacing to allow the bucket to stand up and batting to insulate the hot pads. The buckets and bowl are machine quilted prior to construction. J. Bargello Handbag Angelique Shah (Intermediate Skill Level) Learn a new technique with this Bargello handbag. This handbag is easily assembled with one jelly roll. This is a great way to expand your creative repertoire and make a very useful handbag in the process. We will have fun sewing and assembling this practical and fun project. K. Magic Squares Lap Quilt Patsy Kinman & Linda Evans (Beginner Skill Level) This quick project can be easily completed. Make several simple blocks and sew together into a large quilt. Large scraps can be used; fat quarters or yardage. Class Fee: $10 Fee Includes: Instructions Project Size: 40” x 54”

L. Blackwood Cardigan Marjorie Baker (Intermediate Skill Level) The Blackwood Cardigan is a cozy and versatile addition to your wardrobe. The fitted shape and extra long sleeves make it perfect to wear under jackets and vests or add style over tank tops and dresses. It is designed to be worn open in the front with no closure. The Blackwood Cardigan is a great pattern to learn techniques for sewing 2-way stretch, knit fabric. Make it tunic or hip length, with or without pockets. Class will include the instructor checking that student has selected the correct pattern size and offer suggestions for pattern alteration to accommodate varied body shape/size. M. Tuffet Betty Mitchell (Intermediate Skill Level) These tuffets are sew much fun, you won't stop at one! Use your machine and some power tools and create a one of a kind stool for your home. They make great gifts too! You will leave class with a finished tuffet base and with info on various leg styles to complete the look you want.

N. Disappearing Hour Glass Quilt Carol Sargent (Intermediate Skill Level) Have fun transforming two 9 1/2 inch squares (1 light and 1 dark) into a fascinating design by sewing pieces together, cutting them apart, sewing together again, cutting them apart one more time turning pieces a bit, sewing back together again to form a block. Class Fee: $10 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: Full, Queen or smaller

O. Whirlygig Quilt Sheila Reinke ( Beginner Skill Level) This is a modern variation of a pinwheel quilt. The blocks are offset with sashing to create a quirky whirlgig pattern. The quilt comes together quickly with simple row construction. Blocks will be pre-cut and ready to sew when you arrive at class. P. Landscape Art Quilt Larry McKenney (Beginner Skill Level) You will create your own interpretation of a landscape quilt. Starting with background fabric, we will build lay-ers for the middle and foreground using “Misty Fuse”, a light weight fusible using fabric paints, and/or markers, details will be brought out to enhance the piece and give it depth and definition. Q. Pineapples on Steroids Lynnette LeGette (Intermediate Skill Level) This technique requires no special rulers and no trimming to size. Enjoy the fun seeing “robust” results with little to no effort. Also learn techniques for faux piping and two-color binding. Class Fee: $35 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: 22” x 53”

R. Trapunto Quilted Wall Hanging Mary Beth Dunn (Beginner Skill Level) Students will produce an eye catching quilted wall hanging that spells out a 4-letter word. You will learn basic machine embroidery, trapunto quilting, multiple hooping and alignment techniques. You can pick one of these words: LOVE, HOPE, PLAY, GIVE, IDEA, KIND, YEAH, JOY to create this fun wall hanging. Class Fee: $35 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: 7” x 25”

Tuesday, April 9 1:30-4:00 Part 1 Wednesday, April 10 8:00-4:00 Part 2 S. The Tunic Bible Class-PART 1 Sarah Gunn & Julie Starr (Intermediate Skill Level) Discussing the tunic plackets, trims, fabrics, silhouettes and sleeves, then illustrate the combinations both with real examples and photos. We will take a look at muslins (fitting garment) to check fitting. We are not fitting experts and encourage you to fit the muslin ahead of time. However we will tweak to ensure the proper fit. Fee Includes: Instructions Project Size: size var ies The Tunic Bible Class-PART 2 Sarah and Julie will guide you through cutting and marking their pattern pieces, followed by placket construction and trim placement. Students will work at their own speed, but those who don’t finish will be in a position to easily finish outside of class. V. Hot Ziggity Elizabeth Peck (Intermediate Skill Level) This quilt is a fun black, white and red quilt. The quilt is on point with set in triangles, and four borders. T. Global Warming Quilt Candy Simms (Intermediate Skill Level) Make an impressive quilt top from a “simple pattern” by making a small change to add the wow factor! Use production methods to sew strips and blocks. You will become an expert in making and pressing 4-patch blocks. The same technique is used for a lap quilt as a king or queen quilt-just more blocks. U. Garments in Half the Time Sandy Davis (Intermediate Skill Level) For today’s sewist who wants quality construction techniques without all the extra work! If you like to sew, after learning these techniques you will LOVE TO SEW! X. Rugs & Beyond Lynnette LeGette (Intermediate Skill Level) Expand the possibilities of this popular technique as we have fun completing in class. Y. Necktie Bookshelf Wall Hanging Carol Sargent (Intermediate Skill Level) Make a unique wall hanging that looks like a bookcase. Books are made out of neckties. Class Fee: $10 Fee Includes: Written instructions Project Size: 21” x 29”

Five Square Table Topper/Runner Patsy Kinman & Linda Evans (Beginner Skill Level) This table topper/runner is quick and easy, you will learn to put the block together in an unconventional way, to make different design and finishes. This table topper/runner has many different ways in which the middle block can be finished. It is fun to see how the block is put to-gether and what the finished project looks like. AA. Up-Style a Sweatshirt into a Cardigan Janice Beatty (Beginner Skill Level) Up-style a sweatshirt into a decorated cardigan! Make an original, one of a kind, using a jelly roll or your scraps. Cut and piece squares to form a border down the front, with added pieced pockets, and appliques on the sleeves. Do some “mini” quilting on the pockets and practice a binding technique around the edge before attaching to the shirt. Class Fee: $20 Fee Includes: Instructions Project Size: Varies

BB. Selvedge Table Runner Angelique Shah (Beginner Skill Level) Save all of your selvedges and make this fun and easy table runner. All selvedges are unique and colorful, so put them to good use. CC. Tossed 9 Patch Block Jennifer Klee (Intermediate Skill Level) This traditional favorite creates a new look by cutting and rearranging a 9 patch block. Start with charm squares (pre-cut prints) or fat quarters/your own assorted 5” print squares, and light/contrasting center blocks. There are several options for this quilt-for those beyond beginner, consider the challenge of adding sashing, cornerstones and/or an extra border. Whether scrappy or coordinating fabrics, it will be a fun adventure! Class Fee: $38 Fee Includes: Pattern Project Size: 56” x 56” or larger

DD. Serger Pintucks, Puffing & Piping Marjorie Baker (Beginner Skill Level) Pintucks and puffing make for a perfect pillow. This class will give you the opportunity to learn serger pintucks using the blind hem foot and serger puffing using the gathering foot in addition to perfecting the rolled hem and gathering features on your serger. Participants can expect to complete this ruffled boudoir pillow cover by the end of class. Cover fits a 12 inch pillow form. Second project of the class: Add some color to your table and perfect your serging skills while making this quick and easy table runner. Fabric strips are serged together using the narrow rolled hem feature to simulate the look of piping. With a bit of origami folding, serging, and one single cut, your strata turns into the bias-cut center portion for a a”10 minute” table runner. Sunset Landscape Larry McKenney (Beginner Skill Level) Participants will receive instruction on the basic design elements of a landscape and use of color and then will create their own interpretation of a landscape sunset quilt. Starting with the background we will fuse colors for the sunset, layer the batting and backing, and then quilt the sky. Next, we will continue to add the middle and foreground elements. We will add yarn and other materials including markers and fabric paints to complete the design and then begin free-motion quilting. GG. Paper Pieced Wall Hanging Patty Gibian (Beginner Skill Level) In class you will learn the technique of paper piecing to create this lovely wall hanging. You will be sewing on paper to get perfect points. This wall hanging is made from four blocks. During the class you should be able to complete the four block and will be given instructions on how to complete the wall hanging. HH. Stitching Pillow Sharon Finekenbine (Beginner Skill Level) Does your back and neck hurt from doing handwork? Using this pillow can help reduce the pain of prolonged slouched shoulders. It can be used for quilting, crocheting, knitting, hand embroidery, while reading, using our smart phone, laptop or kindle, or anything else that needs a little elevation. The class will start by making a pin cushion to learn the techniques then move onto the stitching pillow. Instructor Biographies

Mary Averbeck from Covington, Kentucky has been a 4-H agent in Kenton County for nearly 20 years. One of her passions is sewing and quilting which she shares with 4-H youth and adults. Mary has been studying with Judy Niemeyer of Quiltworx and is excited about this approach to paper piecing. It is precise, organized and leads to fantastic results. Marjorie Baker from Georgetown, Kentucky is a University of Kentucky Extension Associate for Clothing and Textiles. She holds a Master’s Degree in Clothing and Textiles from Kansas State University. She serves as the State Coordinator for the Ken-tucky Volunteer Clothing Construction Program and program support for the Kentucky 4-H Apparel and Textiles projects and pro-gram. Janice Beatty from Louisville, Kentucky is a Trained Sewing Instructor and a member of the Louisville ASG Chapter. She started sewing in 4-H, continued by making her clothes, gifts, kid’s clothes, and home décor. She has won four KY State ribbons in Textiles. At her business, “The Sewing Kit”, where she teaches sewing, does home décor and alterations. Sandy Davis from Louisville, Kentucky is a certified Palmer/Pletsch Beginning Sewing teacher, a licensed Martha Pullen Beginning Sewing, Serger Sewing and Heriloom Sewing teacher, a certified Sulky Sit & Sew teacher, a certified Islander Sewing Systems Instructor, and a Master Clothing Volunteer Emeritus, with over 25 years’ teaching experience. Mary Beth Dunn from Lexington, KY is a Kentucky born and raised, blue bleeding, lover of all things quilting! Since she retired from her civil service job as an oceanographer with the federal government in 2014 she has focused her creative talents on designing quilts, making quilts and teaching quilting. She has won 3 Viewer’s Choice Awards and a number of ribbons. She takes hard techniques and turns them into easy and fun improvisational piecing. Her artistic talents shine through in her animal patterns and confetti silhouttes. She teaches free motion quilting on home and long arm machines. She spreads the quilting gospel from shops and guilds across the state of KY and from her home studio in Lexington Linda Evans & Patsy Kinman from Grant County, Kentucky they are Certified Master Clothing Volunteers and have been for more than 10 years, they enjoy teaching children and adults and have taught in Grant and surrounding counties. They have taught at the Sewing Expo in the past years. They have knowledge in sewing, quilting as well as needlework. Sharon Finkenbine from Minster, Ohio has over 50 years of sewing experience. She was a 4-H advisor, worked at a coat facto-ry, a custom sewing company, and recently retired as head of the alterations department of an Ohio bridal shop. She has sewn eve-rything from underwear, outerwear, formal wear, home décor and quilts. Patty Gibian from Shelbyville, Kentucky is a retired middle school teacher who loves patterns! She started quilting after retiring because I was drawn to the geometry of it. For the past two years I have had the pleasure of combining my two passions: teaching and quilting, by teaching a monthly paper piecing class at Birdsong Quilt Shop in Georgetown, KY. Sarah Gunn from Spartenburg, South Carolina area is the creator of the popular sewing blog, Goodbye Valentino. She has inspired thousands of women to renew and learn the skill of sewing. Sarah was selected by Mood Fabrics, Project Runway’s go-to-fabric store as one of the original Mood Sewing Networks bloggers. She is a Coats & Clark contributor, the brand Ambassador for Pfaff Sewing Machines and co-author of “The Tunic Bible.” Jennifer Klee from Versailles, Kentucky learned to sew as a 4-H’er. She has sewn for herself and family since then. She taught sewing to youth and adults during her career as a Kentucky Extension Family & Consumer Science Agent-and continues to teach sewing and quilting in retirement. Lynnette LeGette from Louisville, Kentucky has experience in various areas of sewing (clothing, décor, quilting). Her pri-mary goal is to keep sewing fun while learning techniques that expand new opportunities and provide keys to successful outcomes.

Instructor Biographies Cont.

Larry McKenney is from Kenton, Kentucky . He has been creating art quilts for about 5 years. Before that he was a batik artist and painter. He is a retired art, math & science teacher having taught kindergarten through graduate school. He is currently the president of the Stringtown Quilt Guild in Burlington, KY. He has exhibited his art quilts both locally and nationally.

Betty Mitchell from Union, Kentucky. She has 30 years in Family & Consumer Sciences Education with middle and high school. Betty also has 14 years in retail sewing with teaching, selling machines and in store management. She has written 2 patterns; “Scalloped Pillow” and “Two Purse”. Elizabeth Peck from Union, Kentucky started quilting about 25 years ago, and has been teaching classes for the last 15 years. She runs a longarm quilting shop out of her home in Union, Kentucky. Mickie Rader from Dillsboro, Indiana has been sewing since she was 4 years old and feels that she can always help someone learn and enjoy learning new things. She has won awards at the national, state and local levels and looks forward to sharing her knowledge. She lives on a farm with her husband and enjoys everyday as a cancer survivor should with faith, hope and love. Shelia Reinke from Omaha, Nebraska started sewing in 2nd grade. Through years of 4-H she found ways to be creative. She taught her first quilting class in 1991 and sponsors 9 quilt retreats every year where she loves to see others get that “creative bug”.

Carol Sargent from Deputy, Indiana is a graduate of Northwest Christian University in Eugene, Oregon. She has done a lot of sewing for others as well as making of all of her husband’s suits. After retiring she has enjoyed quilting and teaching quilting clas-ses. Angelique Shah from Louisville, Kentucky is a creative person that quilts, sews women’s garments, embroi-ders, paints, and is a practicing Yogi. Angelique has a passion for the creative process and loves trying new things. Angelique is a veteran of the US Navy, and currently runs her own long arm quilting business in her spare time called Mojo Quilts, LLC Candy Simms from Versailles, Kentucky has been sewing since her childhood and is a Certified Master Clothing Volunteer. She owns CLS Originals, a sewing and dressmaking business, and enjoys making quilts and teaching others to sew and make quilts “for fun.” Debbie Stidham from Burlington, Kentucky has been sewing since age 5, taught by her great granny., grandma and mom. She has been a member of Homemakers for over 40 years, retired as a high school math teacher. And she loves to sew! Julie Starr from Charleston, South Carolina area is the co-author of the award winning “The Tunic Bible” is a perennially favor-ite contributor to the 400,000+ global member website Sewing Pattern Review. Her professional career in custom luxury home-building on Kiawah Island, South Carolina provides a skill set which translates easily to garment design and construction. Angie York from Eddyville, Kentucky is the Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent for Lyon County in western Kentucky. She has been sewing since the early age of 8 years old and enjoys garment sewing, craft making , and especially quilting. The best part of her job with the University of Kentucky is teaching other people to love sewing as much as she does.
