About the Author

Eric v.d. Luft has been Curator of Historical Collections in the Health Sciences Library of SUNY Upstate Medical University since 1987. He received his A.B. magna cum laude in philosophy and religion from Bowdoin College in 1974, his M.A. and Ph.D. in philo-sophy from Bryn Mawr College in 1977 and 1985, and his M.L.S. from Syracuse Uni-versity in 1993. He formerly taught philosophy at Villanova University and served as Historical Collections Assistant at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. He is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. His approximately 520 publica-tions are mostly encyclopedia articles, but also include three books authored, three books edited, one book translated and edited, 32 peer-reviewed articles in professional journals and anthologies, and frequent contributions to the Upstate Medical Alumni Journal. Among the topics of his writing are philosophy, librarianship, clinical medicine, history of medicine, history of science, military history, intellectual and cultural history, popular culture, medieval Iceland, and contract bridge.
