Introduction of Engineering Coll ege, KUAS

There are five departments and one graduate institute in the college: Chemical and MaterialsEngineering Department, Civil Engineering Department, Mechanical Engineering Department,Mold and Die Engineering Department, Industrial Engineering and Management Department, andGraduate Institute of Applied Science and Engineering. Each department provides four-yearundergraduate programs for the Bachelor degree. All departments in the College of Engineeringalso offer master and Ph.D. programs. For details, please visit the department website. All thecourses designed in the college are strongly related to the industry.

Most of the departments have their own individual buildingsexcept for the Department of Industrial Engineering andManagement and the Graduate Institute of Applied Science. TheCollege has three research centers, Examination Center of ChemicalMaterials (ECCM), Environment & Disaster Protection TechnologyResearch Center (EDPTRC) and Microelectromechanical System &and Device Laboratory. All centers have strong links with theindustry. For example, most of fond of the centers is from theindustry.

The college has a faculty of Applied Science and Engineering 34professors, 47 associate professors, 26 assistant professors and 15instructors. Currently, there are about 3500 registered students, including 2600 undergraduate students, 850 master students and 50Ph.D. students

    Goals of Future Development

Balanced development in teaching, research, and providing community services is the goal of the College of Engineering:

    1. The goals for teaching is to train the students not only with the necessary knowledge andskills to be a good quality engineering professional but also have global views and visions.

    Information about Kaohsiung

The city is located in the south of Taiwan between120143012023'30 east longitude and 223030224530north latitude. It is the second largest metropolis (with 1.5 millioninhabitants) in Taiwan. The city is often known as TaiwansHarbor Capital because of its close connection and heavy relianceon the ocean and maritime transportation. Although the ranking hasdeclined steadily over the last few years, Kaohsiung is still theworlds sixth largest cargo-container seaport. The city has highconcentrations of heavy industry, including steel production, shipbuilding, and other exports that have led to Kaohsiungsrelatively high levels of air pollution (though the situation hasimproved substantially in recent years). Unlike Taipei , Kaohsiung isa planned city with wide streets and slightly less traffic congestionthan the capital. The city government holds the idea of a joyfulKaohsiung as the core concept for administration. In recent yearsKaohsiung has been transformed from a primarily industrial cityinto a modern Asian metropolis, with the future intention of continuing to develop the natural aspects of the city, especially therivers. S.H.E. (safe, healthy, ecological) is the concept behind thedevelopment plans for the future of the city.

    Information of Department/Institute

    1. Information about the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

A hearty welcome to the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering!

The chemical industry plays an important role in Taiwans economic development. Ourdepartment is characterized by the close connection with chemical and material industries. Inrecent years, the performance and productivity of our faculties have been attracted great attention, especially in nanomaterials, conductive polymers, and electrochemistry. If you are interested inseeing the Department or require further information I would be delighted to hear from you, byphone, fax or e-mail.

1-1 Brief Introduction of the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering was established in 1963 as theDepartment of Chemical Engineering. Along with the development of modern technologies, thefield of chemical engineering has become increasingly broader than ever before. Thedepartment was renamed to Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering in 2005. TheDepartment offered the Bachelor of Science degree, and, post-graduate study leading to Masterand Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees were initiated in 2001 and 2007, respectively. Currentenrollments in the Department are about 480 undergraduate students, 180 students in Masterprogram and 3 persons in PhD Program. Over 3000 chemical engineers were graduated from theDepartment since the inception. Most of the graduates have successful careers, either domesticallyor overseas in industry, research institutes and academia. Recently, in order to show their gratitudeto the Department, the alumni have established an educational endowment foundation to facilitateteaching and research related activities of the Department.

The faculty members are very active in research. Their activities cover many fields of traditional chemical engineering and those related to technologies in polymers, ceramics, electronic materials, nanomaterials, pollution control, fine chemicals, biochemical engineeringand biomaterials. Currently, the department has 26 full-time faculty members, including 7professors, 7 associate professors and 10 assistant professors and 2 lectures.

The Department offer graduate study in chemical and materials engineering leading to

    Key Instruments Introduction Picture

X-ray Diffraction X-ray Diffraction (XRD) is aneffective method for identifying thephase present in unknownpolycrystalline powders. It providesphase analysis of materialsthroughout the manufacturingprocess, form raw materials toproducts.

    Dynamic LightScattering (DLS)

DLS Provides a quick and simplemethod for submicron particle sizing.

    Differentialscanningcalorimetry (DSC)

The DSC offers a measurementtechnique of thermal analysis toperform fusion, glass transition, thermal history, crystallization, Curiepoint, oxidation stability and thermalchange. DSC can also be used tocover such needs as specific heatcapacity and purity measurements

    Atomic ForceMicroscopy (AFM)

The AFM does not require aconducting sample. It is useful forimaging soft samples.

TGA/DTA TGA/DTA is used for reactionvelocity and acceleration degradationtests, as well as analysis of the waterand ash content in samples, andevaluation of decomposition,
