Summary: A launchpad accident leads to delayed missions and FBI backgroundchecks.

The episode is set two years after MollyCobb’s mission to the moon for the mili-tary base the US president Nixon wantedso badly. He has it now. Or rather, Presi-dent Teddy Kennedy does.

The US is the first country to haveplaced a military base on the moon afterhaving found the existence of water there. On August 24, 1974, Edward Baldwin,Gordo Stevens, and Danielle Poole, theteam of Apollo 22 are now on the moonresearching and getting everything set upat the military base. They are waiting for

the arrival of the next mission in a week.On the ground, we see a lot has changed. Margo Madison’s seat at the flight control room has

changed, but not so surprisingly, she is not the first woman flight director of NASA.Yes, she was the first woman to enter the Flight Control Room, work with a room full of men

(literally), but where is the drama were she made the first flight director as well? So we see IreneHendricks take charge of the position after Gene Kranz gets promoted as the Director of NASA.

She is awarded this position by President Kennedy, mainly because of the leadership sheshowed while the James Town base (military base on the Moon) was being launched. In themeanwhile, Margo doesn’t look too happy.

In the following scenes, we come to know Margo has been passed over, and it is clearly theresult of workplace politics at play here. Then she is told to collect a report about Saturn 5 (therocket that ended up in smoke just before its launch).

This report is supposed to help the scientists do quick work on getting the next mission setup, but the only person who can access it is Margo. You see, the man who designed Saturn 5rockets is Wernher von Braun and he is ready to hand in the report only to Margo and in person.

She has hated this man since the truth about his time in Nazi Germany during the warwas revealed. She considers him a war criminal who needs to be prosecuted, and now, to beinstructed to meet him in person, is something Margo is unable to come to terms with.

She does it anyway, and at this meeting, she learns the truth about her father’s work fromvon Braun. The former NASA director tells her how her father’s work as a physicist helped thebombing at Nagasaki and resulted in the deaths of thousands of people.

This, of course, comes as a shock to her because all this while she had thought her father wasa lonely man who found his stamp collection more important than his daughter. While Margo isdealing with this, Ellen Waverly learns the special agent Donahue, who is tasked with finding thetruth about the Saturn 5 explosion, is targetting her boyfriend for visiting a gay establishment inHouston.

You may wonder how this connects to the explosion of a rocket. Turns out, there are somemilitants who pose as gay men to extract sensitive information which can then be used againstthe US. In this case, it lead to the explosion of an important NASA mission.

The agent is expected to question Ellen next to corroborate her boyfriend’s statement and bydoing this Ellen will be committing a felony. She comes to understand that it is either this orgetting thrown out of NASA for being a lesbian and then being looked at by the people in hercountry as if she were some pervert.

So Ellen has a lot on her mind, and under all this pressure she tries to tell her girlfriend Pamthat maybe it is time they take a break. She is fearing losing everything over her sexual identityenough to wonder if all this, ”kissing girls” is just a phase. In an attempt to keep her job, shebreaks Pam’s heart.

When people are dealing with all of these conflicting emotions, the investigation into the rocketexplosion is clearly turning into a witchhunt. The defects in the manufacturing process of a valvein the rocket resulted in the plane crash.

The culprits are men in power who have signed contracts for their benefit and are far removedfrom NASA and one of the things Braun reveals to Margo is this exact same thing. However, the investigation is not moving in this direction and there we have it, ladies and gentlemen.Corruption in alternate history!

Summary: Ed, Gordo, and Danielle struggle with an extended Jamestown mis-sion.

The episode begins with Margo Madisoninforming the James Town base crew thatthe valve of Saturn V, which was thereason behind the blast of the rocketrecently, has been manufactured by adifferent company now. However, thereis something else that stops NASA fromsending a team to relieve Edward, Gordoand Danielle Poole.

There is some other technical diffi-culty which will take a couple of weeksto be fixed. The crew takes it in theirstride and accepts the position of scien-

tists back in Houston. They get this update on November 9, 1974.However, further delays in getting the next mission ready, affect the crew. They have been

away from home for far too long and this has left the team’s morale plummeting. Danielle’shusband is struggling with PTSD after his time served during the Vietnam War and Edwardand Gordo’s sons are rebelling, finding trouble that leads their mothers to attend multiple PTAmeetings.

Gordo is struggling to live in a confined space any longer. So much so, he develops a conditionthat leaves him anxious and jittery. Danielle, who saw the same symptoms in her husband, triesto warn Edward about this, however, he doesn’t heed to her warning.

Instead, when Gordo picks a fight with Danielle about surveilling the Soviets who have alsomanaged to get their base eight miles northwest of the James Town base, Ed grounds him andtells him he is now confined to the base and is not to be taken out on their missions.

When Ed and Danielle are on a mission run to the crater where they are collecting samples ofice, they see track marks left behind by the Soviets, which Ed reports to NASA. The confinementaggravates Gordo’s mental condition further and Edward realizes the extent of it when he seesGordo wake up in the middle of the night wanting to reenact scenes of a TV show the crew wouldwatch to pass their time.

The VHS tape is now worn out and the only thing the three of them could do was mimicdialogues they had memorized. When Edward suggests Gordo and he take a walk and tries tounderstand what Gordo is going through, he sees there is nothing he can do to help.

Gordo explains he did not sign up to be confined to a base, and from being astronauts whoare expected to explore space, the crew is now reduced to ”playing house” trying to keep theirbase safe from Soviet plans. Something about this conversation unsettles Edward.

Then Gordo claims he saw an ant inside the suit, somewhere near the face fo the helmet andfreaks out enough to want to remove his helmet. Of course, doing so would have resulted in hisdeath.

Edward, however, manages to stop him, calm him down and bring him back to the base. Heexplains that Gordo and Danielle would have to return on the safe boat while he would staybehind to man the base and keep the Soviets away.

He also explains to Gordo that he would have to tell the truth to Houston, explain that this isa medical emergency to get it approved. Danielle, who is already seeing her husband lose himself, doesn’t want Gordo to follow suit.

If Edward were to report what happened with Gordo, he would be referred to a psychiatrist, and his license to fly would be revoked. Danielle realizes how this would affect Gordo, and so shedecides to give Edward a way to claim a medical emergency without revealing Gordo’s condition.

In an attempt to change the battery of heavy equipment, she breaks her hand. The fact thatthis conflict even arose because of corruption in the U.S. government or the delay in finding away to relieving the team is not acknowledged.

Edward’s decision to stay behind fetches him a promotion and Gordo can now keep his li-cense, but what about the Soviets? How can Edward be expected to handle surveillance alone?

Summary: NASA preps a Jamestown relief mission, while Karen waits for news atthe hospital.

The episode begins with Karen waiting inthe hospital to hear about her son. Shehasn’t been told about the extent of hisinjuries and all that she is expecting is abroken bone.

When she meets the doctor and hearsthat Shane is in surgery, that is the firstmoment that we see a crack in her ve-neer. Until that moment, she was tryingto hold the fear in, but once she hearsabout the extent of damage that was doneto Shane, especially his brain, she beginspanicking.

Tracy Stevens, Karen’s close friend hears about it and brings in help. She stays with Karen, until Shane’s surgery is completed but Karen is not ready to let the gravity of Shane’s situationsink in.

She distracts herself by diving into mundane chores, like making calls, canceling her appoint-ments and so on. Even once the doctor informs her that Shane is brain dead, Karen is not readyto accept it and goes for a second opinion. She gets Deke Slayton, to call in one of the bestneurosurgeons in the country to take a look at Shane.

While she is struggling with possibly losing her son, NASA’s flight director Margo Madisonhas to decide if the team on the ground should inform Edward about it. She listens to everyone’sopinions but leaves the decision to be made by Karen.

Karen, who understands Edward the best, decides not to inform him until Shane’s conditionhas been checked by the doctor Deke brings in. She even talks to Edward about the basketballgame and the two reminisce about how fast Shane is growing up.

Edward doesn’t understand what Karen is feeling at the moment but thanks to the Sovietswho are surveilling the calls on the James Town base, Edward in part realizes that something iswrong. He receives communication from Zvezda who shares their sympathies with him about hisson.

Edward doesn’t understand what that is about, and when he does get in touch with Houston,Gordo and Margo tell him that they are not sure what the Soviets meant. In the meanwhile,Karen hears from the neurosurgeon that there is nothing he can do for Shane at the moment.

That is when Karen understands that Shane is never going to return to her, and the tears, theones that she doesn’t seem capable of stopping continue to drop. Even at this moment, Karendecides to box it all in.

She also has to inform Edward now, and she does so through a television screen. What wouldlearning something like this do to a man, who is alone on the surface of the moon?

The only people around him are the ones that he was programmed to believe are his enemies. The isolation does him in, as does the frustration of not having a way to go back to his son andwife.

Karen struggles with grief in the confines of familiarity as her friends arrive to console herand if needed grieve with her. Edward, on the other hand, does it in complete isolation. The effectthat this would have on him is as of now unclear.

Summary: A crisis in space puts the Apollo 24 and 25 crews in peril.

In the last episode, we saw Edward Bald-win learn of his son’s death and followingthat he cut off communication with Hous-ton.

His wife Karen Baldwin is left to dealwith the loss and further arrangementsalone. She has no one to lean on andfinds herself unable to face people shehad once considered her close friends.

This episode sees Karen continue togrieve the loss of her son, but she also

understands that her life, for the most part, revolved around her son, Shane, and her husband. In their absence, she is floundering around to find herself.

Then we have Ed, who after a period of mourning gets back to work on the James Town Base.Yet, he is not ready to get back in contact with Houston. Margo Madison, Gordo Stevens, DaniellePoole, Molly Cobb and Tracy Stevens, Deke Slayton, Ellen Waverly among others are trying theirbest to get Apollo 25 launched in time to bring Ed back home.

However, in a twist of fate, things do not turn out as expected. The episode titled ’Bent-bird’shows NASA launches Apollo 25, however, once the rocket leaves the earth’s atmosphere, theteam inside Apollo 25 is unable to launch the spacecraft and make it into the orbit that wouldtake them to the moon because of a technical error – the failure of SEC guide up.

That’s when Molly Cobb and Tracy Stevens come to the rescue. Molly understands the prob-lem and she suggests she lead a mission with Apollo 25, which would replace the faulty core inthe computer on Apollo 24.

It is while this mission takes place that an accident occurs leading to the most nerve-wrackingstretch of time in the entire season. During the self-test period, the Apollo 24’s system, for somereason, arms the booster.

This takes Apollo 24 in an unplanned direction and along with it goes Apollo 25, since it isstill tethered to Molly. It also led to the death of Harrison who got sucked into the booster andthat’s when Molly decides to detach the two spacecraft from one another and in the process, sheis on a freefall in space.

This mission could have resulted in Molly’s death too if Tracy hadn’t stood her ground. This isjust the beginning. With the video feed cut off, and Apollo 24 incommunicado, Houston is undera lot of pressure.

Apollo 25 looks out to rescue Molly before they return, however, she is not in sight. Apollo25 is also on a new trajectory as they are trying to track where Molly is. When they spot herflashlight signal, she is about a half-mile out and NASA calculates a rescue trajectory, but withApollo 25 losing fuel fast, they will not be able to rescue Molly and return to earth’s orbit.

Margo is left with no choice, but to recall Apollo 25 and cancel any plans of rescue, but it isTracy who takes control and stands steadfast. She is not leaving Molly behind.

With Gordo’s help, Tracy manages to come up with a plan and they do successfully rescueMolly, but what is heartbreaking is the fact that Apollo 24 is one-man short and on an orbit thatmay not take the NASA astronauts to the moon. Ed, may as well be stranded on the moon for alonger time. In the face of his son’s death, this failure is a cruel joke.

Summary: Ed handles a trespasser. Ellen and Deke chart a new course withoutMission Control.

The episode begins with Ellen regainingconsciousness aboard Apollo 24; she andDeke are alone because, in the chaosof last week’s disaster, it was hard totell exactly what happened to their crew-mate Harry, but this week confirms thathe was in fact pulled into the rocketblast. Harry’s death definitely happenedon screen in ”Bent Bird,” but the dramagot so caught up in trying to save Molly

Cobb that it’s only now that NASA (and by extension, the show) has the bandwidth to pay tributeto another dead astronaut.

The mission now, of course, is to keep that body count from increasing, though Ellen andDeke are in a tough jam: They’re miles off course, very low on fuel, and stand a large chance ofovershooting the moon and just drifting off into the unknown. It’s one of those terrifying scenariosyou might never expect to find yourself contemplating until, of course, the very worst happens, and Deke and Ellen seem to face it with some good humor.

But remember that scene in the movie Contact when the guys give Jodie Foster a suicide pilland tell her they’ve been giving them to astronauts since the beginning? Whether this is trueabout the space program has never been confirmed, but Ellen makes a good point about how,in their case, all they’d have to do is just open the hatch. After all, when it comes to space, it’ssurviving that’s hard to do, not dying.

Down on Earth, however, NASA has a plan to make that survival happen. The catch is theyhave to get some help from Ed — who is still not responding to their communication requestsbecause he’s busy interrogating the Russian cosmonaut he trapped in the airlock at the end oflast week’s episode. (Anyone else kind of relieved that Ed didn’t murder the guy? For All Mankindhas taken some dark turns, but that one might have been too much.)

”Ivan,” as Ed calls him (the guy’s real name is Mikhail) is tied up and turns out to speakEnglish pretty well, especially when challenging Ed about the supposed ”goodness” of America.Mikhail won’t say anything about the Russian plans for the moon, except to note that ”this isthe moon, mister — it belongs to all of us. The moon belong to the whole world.” Also, while boththe Americans and the Russians need the moon’s ice for their colonies, ”there is enough ice foreveryone.”

This isn’t convincing enough for Ed, though, nor is Mikhail’s attempt to bond with his captorby engaging him in a conversation about Elvis. Mikhail loves Elvis thanks to the illegal bootlegshe heard when he was younger; Ed, however, prefers Sinatra, as Elvis has gotten older whileSinatra ”just gets better with time.”

As they wait for Ed to come through, Ellen and Deke chat about their lives, with Deke in badshape after sustaining a serious puncture wound and internal bleeding. Things take a nasty turnwhen Ellen tells Deke about her real love for Pam, and Deke reacts with, for lack of a better term, extreme prejudice. Part of it is bigotry, part of it is anger that Ellen’s being gay could affect theprogram, but all of it leads to Deke giving her one piece of advice: ”Don’t tell anyone else whatyou told me.” Deke’s death theoretically keeps her secret safe; if this was a test on Ellen’s part tosee if coming out of the closet would be a real possibility for her, it went pretty badly.

Houston finally manages to get Ed on the comm after it starts flickering the lights insidethe Jamestown station, communicating a simple SOS with Morse code (everyone should go seeParasite, by the way), and there’s no real mention of how Ed has basically gone space crazy forwho knows how long — everyone’s just grateful to get him onboard for the plan to save Apollo24. Ellen and Deke were able to use the last of their fuel reserves to get within a matter of feet totheir ideal trajectory, but if Ed launches off the surface in the lunar lander, he might be able toget them some additional fuel and bring them back down to the moon.

The only problem — one Ed doesn’t mention to NASA — is that getting the extra fuel from aused vehicle should be a two-man job. But it’s something Mikhail knows, and he offers to help,if only because international law demands it. ”We are on the dark ocean together,” he says. ”Wehave no choice but to trust each other.”

The episode skips past Ed and Mikhail’s successful retrieval of the fuel, and Mikhail returnsback to his base while Ed launches the lander. Unfortunately, he can’t dock with the Ospreybecause it’s spinning too much, so they land on a plan for Ed to literally toss the fuel tanksthrough space — the toss goes a little wide, and Ellen misses it on the first attempt but eventuallymanages to snag it. (If you shouted ”Goddamn it!” when Ellen missed, know that you were notalone.)

The mission is successful, but there’s no saving Deke. It’s just Ellen and Ed on the surface ofthe moon now, and Ed is hesitant to return to Earth. Ellen manages to persuade him. It’s clearthat the temptation to stay behind and continue avoiding the grief he knows is waiting for him isreal; it’s a credit to him as a person that he does eventually accept that it’s time to go home.

Ellen is thus now the lone American on the moon, and at a televised press conference fromher new home, she gets to deliver the big, inspirational, season-closing monologue, reminding usthat ”sacrifices are part of the journey.”

Pam is watching as Ellen also takes the opportunity to say ”I love you” to Larry; earlier,Pam defied ”the rules” thanks to an increasingly rebellious Karen and came to watch the rescueattempt from the viewing room at NASA headquarters. But Pam and Ellen’s future is still veryuncertain.

Meanwhile, on Earth, my prediction from last week about what would happen to Aleida andOctavio turned out to be totally incorrect: Octavio is getting deported, and while Aleida did go toMargo asking for help, all she asks for was a place to stay. Margo, unfortunately, doesn’t wantto add caring for a teenager to her full plate, and when Aleida’s original hosts disappear (eitherarrested or on the run), the girl is left alone in the world with a backpack full of clothes and aletter of acceptance to the Kennedy School that it’s unclear she’ll be able to use.

There are a lot of unfinished stories here — Karen in particular feels like a work-in-progress

— so it’s a relief to know there’s a second season of this show already in production. What’sto come? Well, the non-period-appropriate use of Tears for Fears’ ”Everybody Wants to Rule theWorld” as the credits roll of course leads into the post-credits flash-forward to the 1980s, whereAmerica is launching one big-ass rocket to the moon, a big-ass rocket containing plutonium thatwill help expand the Jamestown colony.
