Dee McConnellProgram Leader, Lifelong Learning Institute [email protected]

Do you wish you had studied architecture? What if you had learned what interested you rather than what was required? Do you wish that you better understood today’s political issues and the news more clearly? Lifelong Learning Institute provides an environment where like-minded people enjoy learning multiple subjects and each other.

If you consider yourself curious and have a thirst for knowledge, it’s time for Lifelong Learning. While colleges and universities welcome older adults into degree programs, LLI offers other ways to continue learning and staying sharp.

Unlike adult education where the goal is to upgrade skills, get promoted or change careers, Lifelong Learning goals are existential. LLI students are excited about learning. It has been proven that learning new information enhances one’s cognitive skills.

At LLI, you’ll find our instructors extremely knowledgeable, experienced and pas-sionate about teaching. We offer a wide range of courses including art, history, writ-ing and wine pairing. Now is the time to learn how to write that book you’ve always thought about or research your family’s past through genealogy courses. Register today and ask about our member’s discount.

It’s time to expand your consciousness and explore new horizons.

“You don’t stop laughing when you grow old, you grow old when you stop laughing.” George Bernard Shaw

■■ ARCHITECTURE

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT: GREATEST ARCHITECT OF THE 20TH CENTURY?Was Frank Lloyd Wright the greatest Ameri-can architect of the 20th Century? You will examine the life and career of the man that many believe was the greatest American architect of the 20th century. His highly original aesthetic and singular philosophy placed Wright in the forefront of 20th century architecture. Wright studied under Louis Sullivan, one of the first builders of skyscrapers. The young Wright’s first independent constructions were his so-called “Prairie Houses,” built in and around Chicago. Despite personal tragedies and changing tastes in 20th century architecture, Wright continued to receive important commissions throughout his long career. ■■ ART

ARCHAEOLOGICAL ART SERIES 1: PAINTINGSThis series (LLI0050) enrolls in three classes at a discount. Includes: Australian Aboriginal Ae-rial Desert Landscapes (LLI0051), Japanese Sumi Painting (LLI0052), and Navajo Healing Sand Paintings (LLI0053). Classes meet 1/17, 1/24 and 1/31. LLI 0050-001 CRN: 505001/17/18-1/31/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER ONLY FEES: $45

AUSTRALIAN ABORIGINAL AERIAL DESERT LANDSCAPESThe Aboriginal culture dates back between 60,000 and 80,000 years with visible rock art dating back 20,000 years. With no written language, Aboriginals created art in order to convey their important cultural stories through the generations using symbols and icons. Their storytelling conveys knowledge, recalls events, and states beliefs through these sym-bols to each generation, teaching them sur-vival and use of the land. Ann Leslie will use her background as an artist to share these stories and bring meaning to the symbols. JAPANESE SUMI PAINTINGSumi is “Black Ink Painting” where the em-phasis is placed on the beauty of every indi-vidual stroke of the brush. Originally devel-oped in ancient China, it has spread across Asia with each culture developing its unique version of the style. The ink is derived from carbon soot collected from the inside of kilns where porcelain dishes were fired. It is so per-manent that 1000-year-old scroll paintings still look fresh today. By using various densities of black to light gray, artists created subtle, ethnic works of art. Ann Leslie is a long time practicing artist. LLI 0052-100 CRN: 505021/24/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

NAVAJO HEALING SAND PAINTINGSNavajo paintings are called dry paintings be-cause they are created with colored sands. The figures may be symbolic of sacred moun-tains, legendary visions, ceremonial dances or chants that help in healing and harvests. For healing purposes, paintings allow patients to transform their mental and physical states by focusing on the symbols and stories to rees-tablish their proper, orderly placement with the forces of life, thus restoring their physical and spiritual health. Ann Leslie has been a prac-ticing artist for many years and has a deep connection with Native American spirituality. ARCHAEOLOGICAL ART SERIES 2: 3-DIMENSIONAL MATERIALSEnroll in this series (LLI0054) and will give you a discounted fee for all three classes in the series: Cherokee Storyteller Gourds (LLI0055), Iroquois False Face Society Masks (LLI0056), and Zuni Guardian Animals (LLI0057). Classes meet on 2/7, 2/14 and 2/21. LLI 0054-001 CRN: 505042/7/18-2/21/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER ONLY FEES: $45

CHEROKEE STORYTELLER GOURDSThe Cherokee tell stories that explain their lives, beliefs, culture, and legends by using dried gourds grown easily in their gardens. The gourds are decorated and often used as everyday objects such as bowls, ladles, masks, rattles, drums, jewelry, mugs, orna-ments, and paintings that tell these important stories. The final products are usually en-hanced with feathers, fur, shells, pearls, cop-per, and leather. IROQUOIS FALSE FACE SOCIETY MASKSEvery culture has its own version of the “boo-gie man” and a need for healers. The False Face Society is the best known of the medic-inal societies among the Iroquois, especially for its dramatic wooden masks. The masks are used in healing rituals and to drive away evil. What problem do you need to solve? Did you have a monster under the bed that needs to be frightened away, or do you need to make a fearsome mask that would scare away can-cer? ZUNI GUARDIAN ANIMALSNative American people believe that every-thing is alive and that the Rock People are the oldest living things on our planet. For the Zuni People of the southwest, each animal has a job, for example; the bear is a healer and stands for strength & introspection. The horse is also a healer but helps you arrive and return from your journey. Other animals are thought to assist you in protection, leadership, catch-ing game, or resourcefulness. Working from a list of animals and their traits, you will work on your own guardian animal or perhaps one for someone who needs help. ARCHAEOLOGICAL ART SERIES 3: PAINTING, PEN & INKEnroll in the series (LLI0058) and you will re-ceive a discount for the combined fees of the three. The classes are: Plains Peoples Led-ger Paintings (LLI0059), Plains People Winter Count History on Bison Skins (LLI0060), and Shaker Spiritual Art (LLI0061). Classes meet 3/7, 3/14 and 3/21. LLI 0058-001 CRN: 505093/7/18-3/21/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBERS ONLY FEES: $45

PLAINS PEOPLES LEDGER PAINTINGSWhen various tribes of Native Americans were forced into forts and reservations, there was little for them to do. Evolving from Plains hide painting, the people were given ledger books for drawing and painting. Women typically created geometric and stylized designs while men created narrative drawings that flour-ished between the 1860s and the 1920s. With the ledger paintings as a guide, you will create your own story as we listen to the soft flute music of Carlos Nakai. LLI 0059-100 CRN: 505103/7/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

PLAINS PEOPLES WINTER COUNT HISTORY ON BISON SKINSThe various tribes of the Plains Peoples were nomadic, thus carrying written records in any sort of book was impractical for people fre-quently on the move with very limited storage. In winter, when there was more time available in camp, a man would typically record the events of the past year on buffalo hides. You will record your year, part of a year or perhaps an important event for your project. LLI 0060-100 CRN: 505113/14/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

SHAKER SPIRITUAL ARTJust about everyone doodles as did the Shak-ers. They would fill up the corners of a page or perhaps begin in the center of the page de-signing a continuous spiral of words and then surround those words with colorful flowers and fruit creating a wreath. Listening to dulci-mer music, you will take a meaningful saying and combine it with your own artwork. LLI 0061-100 CRN: 505123/21/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

ARCHAEOLOGICAL ART SERIES 4: PAINTING, PEN & INKEnroll in the series (LLI1052) and you will enroll in all three classes and receive a dis-count on the fee. Includes: Tibetan Mandalas (LLI1053), Tlingit Guardian Spirit and Tribe An-imals (LLI1054) and World Cave Paintings and Petroglyphs (LLI1055). Classes are scheduled on 4/4, 4/11 and 4/18. Members Only. LLI 1052-001 CRN: 505194/4/18-4/18/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER ONLY FEES: $45

TIBETAN MANDALASMandala means circle in Sanskrit and is a symbolic way of representing the universe and various elements within it such as pal-aces, kingdoms, mankind, and other cosmic concepts. Mandalas have been used in teach-ing, as aids in healing and prayer or to assist in calming meditation. Assisted with soft music, you will create your own mandala for peace, harmony, or a symbolic garden to walk through. TLINGIT GUARDIAN SPIRIT & TRIBE ANIMALSAnimal totems are animal spirits represented in emblems unique to a tribe, family, or clan. The symbols may reflect the lineage of the tribe and remind people of their ancestry and creation stories. Totems may be carved and painted on buildings or long, wooden upright poles. The spirits are kept alive in the carv-ings that watch over families, clans, and tribes as guardian spirits and helpers. They are not worshipped, but they inspire great respect. Who would be your helper or what animal would you send to someone who needs help? LLI 1054-100 CRN: 505214/11/18 WE 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: Ann Leslie W 218MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

WORLD CAVE PAINTINGS & PETROGLYPHSFor more than 40,800 years, the journey of civilization has been recorded by humans. The adventures and stories of ancient peoples are told by the chipping and pounding marks left on rocks and through paintings in caves and on cliffs. Humans have left their stories on every continent and perhaps under the ice caps at the poles by using the most primitive of tools and their hands. If you had to tell your future family something, what would it be? Whatever you say, it must be understandable now and in the next thousand years. MARGARET FULLER: A PASSIONATE LIFE Margaret Fuller, one of the lesser-known of America’s most talented women, lived a life of passion and adventure. She was one of the foremost intellectuals of the early 19th centu-ry, the first female foreign war correspondent from the United States, and a good friend of Emerson and Thoreau. But she had a fatal flaw: she lived only according to her emotions, her deep and passionate feelings, and this led her to an early death. Taught by Harper College Professor Bill Pankey. LLI 6084-100 CRN: 505684/13/18 FR 10:00 AM-12:00 PMInstructor: William Pankey W 219MEMBER FEES: $19 NON-MEMBER FEES: $38

SECRET PLACES, UNKNOWN SPACES In a two-part series with a spring 2018 pre-miere at Harper, author and historian Jerome M. O’Connor will present two chapters of his new book. To be released on the eve of the 75th anniversary marking the end of World War II, the book, which is being considered as a film documentary, will reveal the exist-ing places that contributed to the victory. DECONSTRUCTING THE NEWS In the Information Age, we are inundated with news—but how can we determine what is reli-able? In today’s race to be the first to report a story, is accuracy sacrificed? In a world where “post-truth” was the Oxford English Dictio-nary’s 2016 Word of the Year, how relevant is truth in the news? Laura Ehrke provides the tools to deconstruct a news story and ana-lyze the elements that make it news (or not). Engage in a lively discussion of current news topics and how they are portrayed in various outlets. This class is part of a statewide News Literacy/Civic Engagement project developed by the Illinois Press Association. THE GELASIAN DECREE: THE “APPROVED” BOOK LIST OF THE BIBLEThe Gelasian Decree from the 6th century CE includes both the “approved” list of biblical texts (the canon) and the original “banned book” list (the rejected texts). Although some of the texts mentioned in the decree are lost to history, the numerous copies of others sug-gest that this ancient “hit list” of texts that Christians shouldn’t consider authentic may have actually made them all the more entic-ing! Before you go to Google, September 17, 1862 was the Civil War battle of Antietam, the single bloodiest day in American military history and a bat-tle that was more important than the better known battle of Gettysburg. You will sequen-tially proceed through the 30 days of an imag-inary month, highlighting the important event in American history that happened on that numbered date. GROUND ZERO: THE MINUTEMAN MISSILE PROGRAMThere have been five mass extinction events in Earth’s history. The Cold War, nuclear proliferation, and the SNAFU Principle have caused us to be on the brink of Mass Extinc-tion six times. Hidden in plain sight from US citizens but not from our enemies, the Minute-man Missile Program continues to serve as a deterrent to nuclear war. Ann Leslie will give you a rare look inside this secure area to view the above-ground living arrangements and the actual launch control facility, Delta One. Then you’ll see the launch facility, Delta Nine, where the security will amaze you. REFUGEE CRISIS IN GERMANY – THREE YEARS LATERThe world looked at Germany incredulous-ly when in the summer of 2015, Chancellor Merkel opened Germany’s borders to more than one million refugees and asylum seek-ers. Equipped with a sturdy social net and a pressing moral obligation to help those in need, Germany seemed to be a new prom-ised land for many of the refugees. But how has the refugee crisis been dealt with during these past three years? Join Anette Isaacs for a fascinating update on the successes and challenges that evolved from Chancellor Merkel’s historic decision. OPERATION FREEDOM: THE BERLIN AIRLIFT 70TH ANNIVERSARYIt was perhaps one of the greatest adven-tures in American military history: the Berlin airlift of 1948-49! When Soviet troops closed all land, sea, and rail access routes to West Berlin 70 years ago — threatening the lives of 2.5 million people and provoking the first major international crisis of the Cold War — American General Lucius D. Clay built a bold and fantastic bridge across the sky, involving 700 planes and 250,000 flights over a period of 14 months. MYTHS IN AMERICAN HISTORYAll countries tweak their national stories to make the past easier to explain to children, but the reality is often stranger, more compli-cated, and far more interesting. This is a gentle exploration of the role of myths in American history and why they have been useful in the past. We look at many specific myths, includ-ing Paul Revere’s ride, George Washington’s cherry tree, and what should be remembered about the Alamo. We will also explore why certain myths have had such staying power, and what they say about our understanding of what it is to be American.
