Kearsney College is delighted to welcome top rugby-playing schools from around the country to the 11th annual Standard Bank Easter Rugby Festival.

From the first festival in 2008, the Easter Weekend of rugby at Kearsney has grown in stature to become the popular event that it is today. With the teams come support staff, relatives, friends and supporters of schoolboy rugby. What an awesome opportunity to enjoy the Easter weekend in the company of rugby players and supporters, in an environment and climate that compliments the experience.

The Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival has been made possible by the magnificent support provided by all our sponsors. Africa’s biggest bank has continued as the festival’s title sponsor this year. Standard Bank has also been Kearsney’s chosen bank for well over two decades and we are delighted to continue the relationship. The Sharks, The Sharks Academy and the KZNRU have supported this festival from inception and we are proud to be associated with this winning brand. Halfway Ford and Hendok Group occupy the position of First Tier sponsors and we are happy to be associated with these brands. Please support all our sponsors as they not only offer high quality products and services, but they are also prepared to invest in supporting sport at school level.

Key to the success of a festival of this nature is the attention given to the participating teams. We have endeavoured to provide comfortable, spacious on-site accommodation to all the teams and management. Their dietary needs are met by the Compass Group team representing a global catering company in clean, modern dining and kitchen facilities. Medical care, including post-match rehabilitation, is on hand to cater for any eventuality.

Message from

Home comforts are provided to all players and management in the form of sponsors’ products and keep-sakes. As a reward to the coaching staff for their commitment to schoolboy rugby we ensure that the odd celebratory libations are provided at post-match functions.

For the second year, Kearsney teacher Mouton Badenhorst is the chairman of the Easter Rugby Festival committee which includes many Kearsney staff, KZN Rugby Union officials, Kearsney Parents’ Society representatives and others who have worked tirelessly to produce a festival of which we can all be proud.

For festival news, fixtures, results and match reports, please visit our website: www.kearsney.comFantastic action shots are uploaded daily to our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/KearsneyCollegeScores, images and news are posted throughout the day on Twitter: @KearsneyNews #KERF #SBSchoolsFest

We thank the schoolboy rugby supporters of KwaZulu-Natal and the rest of South Africa for their support of the Festival. Enjoy the Festival and all the entertainment around it.

Carpe Diem

KERF director Mouton Badenhorst (right), with Michael Delport and Dylan Acutt, and part of last year’s Boots & Balls collection

For us, as the organising team of the 2018 Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival, it is important to focus not only on ensuring a family-friendly event with quality rugby played in the correct spirit of the game, but also to focus on the wider rugby-playing community.

Part of this community focus is ensuring the success of our Boots & Balls initiative, which was started in 2015. New and good condition second-hand rugby kit and clothing, collected from participating players and the public during the course of the festival weekend, will be handed over to the KZN Rugby Union’s Development Programme after the festival. Once it has been sorted and refurbished, it is then distributed to development teams throughout the province.

To those who have come to enjoy the festival. We will continue to ensure we attract top rugby-playing schools to our event each year, as well as to create an atmosphere for families to relax and enjoy typically fast-paced schoolboy rugby.

Message from

To the players. There will be winners, and there will be losers. Remember, how we win the game shows something about our character; how we lose shows all of it.

Give it your best, boys. Play hard and fair and take home many happy memories and new friendships.

This world-class school sporting event is one of the country’s most highly-anticipated events on the schoolboy rugby calendar.

In South Africa the one thing that unites us as a nation regardless of our different backgrounds is sport. When we are all united by sport, it doesn’t matter who we are and where we come from, we are just all excited to be there.

Once again, Standard Bank is honoured to partner with Kearsney College as a major sponsor of the school’s 11th Rugby Festival, one of the most popular events on South Africa’s sporting calendar.

Since its inception just over a decade ago, the festival has grown into an event not to be missed.

At Standard Bank, we’re always committed to coming along for the journey as people prepare and experience their NEXT, whether in sport, business or personally. Standard Bank sees this festival as an opportunity to not only support and nurture the leaders of the future as they prepare for their NEXT, but also to show our clients that we respect and honour their personal decision to bank with us.

Message from

These sporting partnerships allow us to engage with our clients in increasingly creative, interactive and personal ways. In turn, this lets us demonstrate that we hear and see your needs and we want to come along for the journey. At Standard Bank, we are committed to adapting a number of solutions that are designed to move you, your children and your business forward to your NEXT.

Thanks goes to the coaches, parents, organisers and teachers who made this event possible.

Our congratulations also go to all the young sportsmen who are competing. Standard Bank urges you to give your best for your team and for yourself.

We also wish all participating schools the best of luck and health. Have fun, play hard and enjoy the true South African spirit of unity and sportsmanship.

A stellar group of top rugby schools are competing against each other in a tournament that attracts top coaches, talent scouts and fans from across the country. The involvement of our Sharks Academy means we, at the Cell C Sharks, keep a keen eye on the players participating at the tournament and their schools, knowing that rugby in the province stands to benefit significantly, both at present as well as in the future.

Annually, our scouts from The Sharks Academy are impressed with the high quality of rugby on offer, the skills displayed, the competitiveness shown, and the overall spirit of schoolboy rugby, which is a joy to watch.

Message from

Schoolboy rugby plays an invaluable role in the development of South Africa’s rugby culture. The sport at school level is where the foundation is built for key values such as sportsmanship, team work, a strong work ethic, perseverance, respect and honour can be taught and embraced. These values resonate with our brand and are what we’re about.

Best wishes to the organising committee, sponsors, participating schools, coaches, players and everyone else associated with this wonderful tournament. May the 2018 edition of the festival be another successful one.

GARY TEICHMANNCEO | THE SHARKS

We, at the Cell C Sharks, are delighted about our on-going association with the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival. The strength, success and reputation of this prestigious festival are evident in the calibre of schools which participate in the tournament annually, and this year is no exception.

School rugby has always played a major role in the development of the game in the country, as well as the success that South African teams have achieved over the last century.

The annual Standard Bank Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival is, without doubt, one of the major events on the South African school rugby calendar. Many future Springboks have attended the festival with their schools over the last 10 years since the inaugural festival back in 2008.

The rugby scene at school level is however changing, as many leading schools are employing full-time coaches and directors of rugby. For the traditionalists this is a disconcerting development.

For some there is a belief that school rugby should stay in the hands of teachers. The professional era however changed the landscape of the game not only at the top, but even at amateur level.

It is important that one of the most important cogs in the South African rugby wheel - schoolboy rugby - stays strong and healthy to keep producing world-class players. Sport at school level has always been utilised as a valuable educational tool.

Schoolboy Rugby - The bigger picture

The game of rugby has its origins in South Africa thanks to a teacher, Canon George Ogilvie, who became headmaster at Diocesan College (Bishops) in 1861. It is a myth that he introduced rugby to Bishops as he detested it. He introduced a game of football based on Winchester rules with a few adjustments to the laws. This was called Gog’s Game.

It was the start of rugby as we know it in South Africa and cemented the role that schools played in this beautiful game. The first rugby game on South African soil was possibly played between Bishops and SACS back in 1862.

The first recorded game of rugby in KwaZulu-Natal was also played between two schools. This was in 1870 between Pietermaritzburg High School (Maritzburg College) and Greytown’s Hermannsburg School.

School rugby must always play an integral part in the game in South Africa. It is just to find the right balance between what is ethical and of educational value for the scholars.

The multi-functional SportZone at Kearsney College is a world-class facility which allows for scientific coaching to take place, regardless of the weather.

It consists of an indoor centre, a weights gymnasium and two swimming pools (one of which is heated). It is a multi-purpose facility which is equipped with seven indoor cricket nets, four bowling machines, two basketball courts, indoor hockey/soccer pitches, change rooms and a viewing deck.

The cricket nets allow for a full bowling run-up, with special cushioning in the delivery stride area to prevent injury. The flooring for the basketball/hockey/soccer courts and the size of the basketball Court One is of international standard, making it one of only two international basketball facilities in the province.

The 280m² high performance weights gym is air-conditioned and equipped with a modern free weights section, a timed circuit training facility and cardio-vascular equipment: treadmills, spinning bikes, rowing machines and boxing bags. Training takes place under the supervision of a qualified biokineticist.

The SportZone complements the High Performance Sports Programme (HPP) offered by Kearsney and allows for scientific coaching to take place whatever the weather.

Kearsney College’s

The HPP, with personalised fitness and conditioning programmes and individual attention from specialists from a variety of fields, ensures that talented sportsmen can achieve their potential.

Dale College in King William’s Town was established in 1861 and took on its current name in 1877 after Cape Colony superintendent-general of education Sir Langham Dale. Rugby was first played at Dale in 1880, but at that time the sport was not as popular as soccer. In 1891 and 1892, Dale played its first rugby matches against Queen’s College and Selborne College respectively - winning both. Rugby was firmly established at the school in 1911 when the famous red and black colours were adopted, and have been worn ever since. Well known Old Dalians include HO de Villiers, Bjorn Basson and Bandise Maku. In 2014 Terra Mtembu took over captaincy of the Sharks from fellow Old Dalian Keegan Daniel.

Founded in 1866, DHS is a traditional boys’ state school, steeped in history and tradition, and known for producing leaders in all walks of life. DHS began playing rugby in 1910 when Maritzburg College Old Boy AS Langley became headmaster and banned the round ball, forcing all boys to play with the oval ball. DHS has produced some rugby legends, including Skonk Nicholson and Springboks Neville Todd (1928), Andrew Aitken (1997), BJ Botha (2006) and Alistair Hargreaves (2009). Several players have represented other countries: Greg Rawlinson (New Zealand), Antonie Claassen (France), Graham Downes (USA), Matt Alexander (USA), Wynston Cameron-Dow (Germany) and Senzo Ngubane (Germany). Provincial players include Skonk Nicholson, Jody Jenneker, John Slade, Luzukho Vulindlu, Garth Williamson, Greg Hamilton, Anton Bresler and current DHS 1st XV coach, Scott Mathie.

In 1903 the Boere Zending School was established in the Boland when the Dutch Reformed Church bought the Drostdy building in Worcester, following a request from prisoners of war to be educated as missionaries. In 1911 the building became an industrial school called Drostdy School; and in 1925 changed to a trade school. Since 1945 it has been known as Drostdy Technical High School and today represents a proud boarding institution of excellence with about 980 learners, predominantly boys. It is currently the top rugby school in the Boland region. Old Boys include Sampie Mastriet (Bulls, Lions, Kings, Blitzbokke), Wilco Louw (Stormers, Springboks), Hanro Liebenberg (Bulls, Baby Boks), Wian Liebenberg (Baby Boks, Montpellier), WP Nel (Cheetahs, Edinburgh, Scotland) and Ruan Kitshoff (Griquas, WP, Namibia).

From humble beginnings with just 26 boys in 1910, Glenwood has grown to become a leading school in South Africa. Rugby was introduced from the start, but initially Glenwood struggled to be competitive against the more established KZN schools. After WWII the school began to win more regularly against its traditional rivals and, since 1950, Glenwood has had a winning record against many KZN schools. The school fields 30 rugby teams each weekend and has produced over 150 international sportsmen, including 7 rugby Springboks, nearly 50 Natal/ Sharks players, 8 SA Schools’ caps and over 170 KZN Schools’ caps. In 2016 10 players were selected for the KZN Craven Week team; and in 2014 three players were chosen for SA Schools.

Founded in Kimberley in 1943, it has become one of the region’s foremost co-ed schools in academics, culture and sport, with 1 000 pupils enrolled. A dual medium school, it has come a long way since the mid 1980’s when it could hardly muster a single competitive team. Today it has six of the strongest rugby teams in the province; with more than its share of provincial and national representatives. These include centres PJ Vermeulen, Jacques de Kock, Ronnie Cooke, Riaan Swanepoel and Andrew van Wyk. In 2004 PJ Vermeulen captained the SA u19 team which won the Rugby World Cup in Durban. Ronnie Cooke is arguably the school’s most renowned Old Boy, having played for the SA u21 side, Cheetahs and in France.

Pretoria Boys High, and English-medium boys school, is one of the great South African schools boasting outstanding grounds and buildings. In the 1880s the government of the Republic of South Africa built a Staatsmodelskool - the building was changed into a prison and at this time Sir Winston Churchill was imprisoned there. It was later renamed Pretoria Boys High School and became the first “Milner” school in the Transvaal. The school can field 30 rugby teams on any given day and has a proud tradition, believing in participation rather than exclusivity. Rugby has been played at the school for over 100 years - with some notable players including John Smit (Springbok captain), Robbie Brink, Brian Liebenberg and Chilliboy Ralepelle.

Queen’s College celebrates its 160th anniversary in 2018, and is the oldest of the ‘Big Three’ Border colleges. In 1924 rugby replaced soccer as the official winter game; and the Queenstown school’s traditional rivals are Dale College, Selborne College, Grey High and St Andrew’s College. Since 1951 the 1st XV has played without the number 13 jersey, after the tragic death of the player wearing that number. The outside centre now wears the number 16 jersey. Springbok old boys include Alan Beswick, Jimmy White, Dick Muir, Robbie Kempson and Kaya Malotana. Others achieving national colours are Owen Lentz (USA), Carlo del Fava (Italy) and Allan Dell (Scotland); S’bura Sithole (Blitzbokke), Lionel Cronjé and JP Smith (both SA u20).

Founded in 1872, this boys’ school is named after the Second Earl of Selborne and adopted the Selborne family coat of arms and motto Palma Virtuti (Honour to the Brave). Rugby started in 1892 with the first match against Dale College. In the modern era Keith Andrews, Mark Andrews, André Vos and Brent Russell have played rugby for South Africa and Rory Kockott for France. Luvuyiso Lusaseni, Khwezi Mona and Chris Cloete are recent Currie Cup players. Selborne College serves the East London community as a state school of 800 boys. Old Selbornians have made their mark in all fields of endeavour, ranging from the arts to the scientific and financial worlds.

Started in 1953 as an Afrikaans-medium school, and changing to dual-medium 22 years ago, Welkom-Gimnasium is the oldest academic school in Welkom. The school fields nine rugby teams each season, against some tough local competition such as Grey College, Monnas, HTS Middelburg, Noord-Kaap and Diamandveld. Welkom’s recent victories include the prestigious Free State Directors’ Trophy and the Kovsie league title. The school aims to provide players the opportunity to express themselves on the field, whilst promoting running and entertaining rugby, sportsmanship, discipline and good moral values. Springboks include Gerrie Sonnekus, Christo Ferreira and Lukas van Biljon; with brothers Jandrè and Peet Marais playing for the Junior Springboks. Jandrè is currently captain of Bordeux, while younger brothers Peet and Retief play for Brive in France.

The development programme started in 1992 with six high schools from the Coloured community in Durban and has now grown to approximately 700 high and primary schools throughout the province.

The programme provides an opportunity for boys and girls from previously disadvantaged communities, including Umlazi, Inanda, Woodlands, Edendale, Kokstad, Gamalakhe, Ulundi, Ezikhaweni, Bergville and Osizweni to learn about and play the game.

KZNRU – IBUTHO/ MARK GODEFROY U13 TEAM

The team chosen to participate at the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival this year was selected at the 26th KZN Rugby Union’s Talent Identification Tournament held at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi last year. The boys have undergone extensive training at camps organised and run by the KZNRU Development Department, The Sharks and with coaches appointed from the communities.

As part of the KZNRU’s new Transformation Policy, all provincial development squads are now called IBUTHO – which means a gathering of the best warriors to fight for the king. This squad is therefore known as the KZNRU IBUTHO/ Mark Godefroy U13 team.
