Diamond Canyon School holds Constitution Day ceremony

ANTHEM ndash Diamond Canyon School commemorated Constitution Day the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution on Sept 17 1787 with a schoolwide patriotic ceremony on Sept 17

The DC band and choir performed patriotic music to set the mood including a rousing rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner from the choir All the students participated in a flag ceremony

Veterans who attended the ceremony were presented with handmade thank-you cards to honor their service

Parkside interim community manager hired

for permanent positionANTHEM ndash Mary Beth Zahn

has been officially hired as the Community Manager for the Anthem Parkside Community Association Zahn has been the interim manager since last March after the departure of former Community Manager Annette McCarthy

In a release set out on Sept 17 the Parkside Board of Directors announced that Zahn had been hired for the position The release noted that four candidates had been interviewed for the position during open recruitment after the job was posted on July 22

ANTHEM ndash Circle Mountain Ranch the development to be built on the north end of 43rd Ave will be annexed into the Anthem community The Anthem Community Council Board of Directors voted 3-1 at their Wednesday night meeting to approve the annexation and extend their formal go-ahead to Pulte Board members Roger Willis Rob Linder Bob McKenzie and John Balzer voted John Birdseye was absent Ryan Halleran abstained and Tim Fyke as Board President did not vote

Pulte will be building 77 homes in Circle Mountain Ranch Lennar will build 125

NORTH VALLEY ndash Desert Foothills Land Trust is once again hosting the 2015 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest Share your favorite shots of Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain to help the Land Trust inspire the protection of the landscapes you love The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for the unique characteristics of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain ndash the landmarks at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities Photos can be taken any time but should feature Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain in some way

Directed by Mikaella Belsan with musical direction by Daniel Kurek the youth production features 34 performers ranging in age from 8-14 Specially adapted from the classic animated film this lively stage version includes favorite tunes such as ldquoThe Bare Necessitiesrdquo and ldquoI Wanna Be Like Yourdquo Audiences will thrill to the adventures of orphaned Mowgli a boy raised by wolves as he befriends a lovable menagerie of jungle creatures and confronts the terrible tiger Sheere Khan and the petrifying python Kaa

Belsan a Surprise resident said she enjoys directing the young performers who are learning dancing singing character development and organizational skills

ldquoI grew up doing youth theater and it is great to be a part of making sure kids in this generation get to experience it as wellrdquo she said

Directing young actors while gratifying can be challenging too

ldquoMany of them are at an age where they like to talk and it can be difficult to keep their attention span However all of the kids are very talented so it makes teaching them the songs dances and blocking easier then I had anticipated Also there is an amazing design team on this show that has created a fabulous set spectacular costumes and

some unique hair and make-uprdquo Belsan said

And while some Disney fans may know the story Belsan said DFTrsquos approach to the production will deliver a creative twist

ldquoPeople should know that this show isnrsquot going to be like anything they expect Yes it will be their favorite Disney characters and song come to life but they will be portrayed in a

unique wayrdquo she said

Upscale Singers announcing 2015-16 season

SCOTTSDALE ndash The Upscale Singers are now in their twelfth season and their program is growing

One of their traditions is presenting an annual December concert Songs of the Season at the Desert Foothills Presbyterian Church In the past theyrsquove offered last-minute tickets at the door but last year they were sold out one week before their concert

So this year for the first time ever the Singers are offering two Christmas concerts Friday Dec 11 at 7 pm and then their traditional time slot on Sunday Dec 13 at 5 pm

Director Margaret Watson has a festive program that moves from fun songs to beautiful carols Last yearrsquos violinist Marlene Rausch who accompanied the troupe on three arrangements was such a hit that the former Arizona Opera concertmaster returns again to play with the Upscale Singers

The 2015-16 season continues next spring when the Singers offer their dinner show Back to Broadway Opening night is at Desert Mountain on Friday April 8 with the show repeated

the next weekend April 17 and 19 at the Opera House at the Carefree Resort

Watsonrsquos features favorite classical musicals and then ends with the genre known as ldquothe jukebox musicalrdquo This seasonrsquos program starts with the well-known South Pacific and Fiddler on the Roof and closes with Beautiful (The Carole King Musical)

In between these medleys the Upscale Kids are on-stage too performing Peter Pan with the adult singers continuing with a tribute to Jule Styne Stynersquos songs include ldquoLet Me Entertain Yourdquo to ldquoPeoplerdquo to ldquoTime After Timerdquo to ldquoDiamonds Are a Girlrsquos Best Friendrdquo As Styne himself said ldquoAny composer who could write for both a Sinatra and a Streisand in one lifetime is luckyrdquo

The Upscale Singers are used to hearing their patrons exclaim ldquoThis was your best show everrdquo But last year they heard a new refrain ldquoI didnrsquot want the show to endrdquo

Game and Fishrsquos Heritage grants deadline approaching

NORTH VALLEY ndash The Arizona Game and Fish

Departmentrsquos Heritage grants application cycle will be closing soon Applications must be received by Wednesday Sept 30 at 5 pm MST

The grants are supported by revenue from Arizona Lottery sales and are available to projects that focus on wildlife including wildlife education schoolyard habitats and wildlife conservation efforts The department has simplified the program including the application eligibility scoring award notification and close-out processes In the last grant cycle Game and Fish used Heritage funds to award $408000 to 25 grant projects across Arizona When combined with matching money from other sources the funded projects total more than $1 million invested in Arizona

Arizona voters created the Heritage Fund back in 1990 A portion of the money from lottery ticket sales goes to conservation efforts such as protecting endangered species educating our children about wildlife helping urban residents to coexist better with wildlife and creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation Over the years Game and Fish has awarded more than $14 million in grants to

communities across the statePotential grant recipients

must have a project that is either located in Arizona or involves research in which the wildlife or its habitat is located in Arizona

to win the Grand Slam One of the most accomplished womenrsquos tennis players in history she stepped onto the court to quickly ldquoput awayrdquo a little known Italian player named Roberta Vinci who didnrsquot stand a chance against the mighty Serena Funny how things can change so quickly But then again life is like that

Lots of people have commented on the ldquoupsetrdquo of the decade Fans blamed Serenarsquos boyfriend a rapper named Drake while others wondered if she was ill Her coach said her ldquomind worked against herrdquo and she said she was stunned at how her game ldquofell apartrdquo Hey sometimes we just have an off day And sometimes a very ldquoordinaryrdquo person does extraordinary things

This is not a story of the hare and the tortoise where an over-confident Williams decided to party the night before the match-up and then snooze through to victory This is one of the most disciplined athletes on the planet so her usual routine of concentration preparedness and practice were in full swing And even though her ldquoswingrdquo failed her she was ready to conquer Many thought Williams was destined to win The champagne was chilled and Grand Slam history was going to be made again

No one is a champion without tasting defeat And no underdog takes the trophy without doing more than they had ever dreamed possible When Vinci took the court to face off Williams Vinci was standing in front of an idol ndash a celebrity ndash a Goliath in the world of tennis Yet somewhere along the way Williams began to lose her confidence and her game fell apart Later Vinci was asked if

Letrsquos not forget about an autistic teenage boy named Jason McElwain from Rochester High School who was the towel boy for the basketball team The coach put him on the roster of the last game of the season and gave him the opportunity to play on the court for the first time No one expected much But McElwain scored a staggering twenty points in three minutes of play The surprise hero sank six three-pointers and an additional shot Although it wasnrsquot enough to get his team

to win the game he won the

hearts of every player and fan

The crowd went wild That day

a young boy felt victory for the

first time in his life

all shapes sizes and ages

New degree program helps ASU build strong sports journalism students

NORTH VALLEY ndash After two years of planning Arizona State University has added a new sports journalism major to the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication The program will provide current and future journalism students with the tools needed to be successful in the sports industry

Its impetus for the new major grew out of student organizations and an expressed interest on campus

Mark Lodato the assistant dean of the Walter Cronkite School said student organizations and clubs ldquoare always a good indication of where interest is headingrdquo

Sports-related clubs at Walter Cronkite such as the Association for Women in Sports Media and the Walter Cronkite Sports Network have seen an increase in participation and popularity which showed a shift in student body interest that ASU has watched closely

For many students including junior Nicole Vasquez sports are a passion and the singular career path they see themselves on For these students the new major is a dream come true

ldquoI want to end up in the sports business and nothing elserdquo Vasquez said

After hearing about the sports journalism major Vasquez

switched from broadcast journalism to sports journalism because she felt it would give her the specific skills she needed to set her apart in the sports industry

The sports journalism major shows ASUrsquos clear response to its student bodyrsquos growing interest but for many students the new major comes a little too late

Justin Emerson is a senior at the Walter Cronkite School He is very involved in sports on campus and has written

for The State Press House of Sparky and currently acts as the assistant media relations intern for the ASU hockey team He is working toward a dual degree program that includes a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism and Mass Communication as well as a Masters of Communication

Switching to sports journalism this late in his college career did not make sense for Emerson who will graduate in May but he still had access to a lot of the opportunities provided prior to the university establishing the major

ASUrsquos sports journalism program has now become a model for other colleges around the country The professional programs faculty and flexibility are all areas that shine at Walter Cronkite Many other colleges and universities are trying to create a similar program but are finding they donrsquot have the faculty or the flexibility found in Phoenix

ASUrsquos sports journalism program is still brimming with fresh ideas and is poised to move in so many exciting directions

The faculty continues its commitment to providing real world student experiences and already has plans for possible 2016 Summer Olympics internships

going through Pulte is giving up annexation rights in Anthem Any future communities that wish to be recognized as Anthem and have use of Anthem amenities must appeal to the ACC Board of Directors Pulte previously held the legal right to annex within a 25-mile radius of Anthem They have agreed in writing to forever relinquish those rights to the community

Residentsrsquo reactions to the annexation have been mixed with questions regarding traffic schools and amenity use However since the development was scheduled to be built whether it was annexed into Anthem or not many residents have reacted favorably since now Circle Mountain Ranch will be paying assessments into the upkeep of Anthem

ACC Community Executive Officer Jenna Kohl provided background information when discussion on the annexation was opened at the Sept 16 meeting

ldquoThere has been much discussion on this topicrdquo Kohl said She noted that Pulte had held two community meetings regarding this saying ldquoThey wanted to get the Boardrsquos feedback and the communityrsquos feedbackrdquo She added that this wasnrsquot required but that it was ldquosomething they (Pulte) wanted to dordquo

Commenters expressed feedback before the vote

Several commenters agreed that the homes to be built were getting increased value from being part of Anthem and that the builders should be paying a larger capital contribution on each home sold

The overcrowding of the Anthem Community Center was a recurring topic No solution for this was reached beyond the new funding from the additional homes

A commenter asked what would happen to the annexation agreement if Pulte andor Lennar sold the development or were no longer in existence The ACC legal team responded that any future owners would

be bound by the supplemental agreement Going forward only the ACC Board of Directors will have the right to annex property into Anthem

Phil Turner Vice President of Land for PulteGrouprsquos Arizona Division noted regarding the traffic issues ldquoThe development will be built by somebodyrdquo Turner said that the City of Phoenix collects from the builders on each home the funds paid are at the cityrsquos discretion for use

ldquoWe will be asking the City of Phoenix to take a look at the traffic situationrdquo Turner said noting that Pulte does a lot of work with the City of Phoenix and may be able to negotiate

ldquoItrsquos not something that wersquore just going to walk away fromrdquo Turner emphasized

Board members gave statements prior to the vote

Willis who voted in favor of the annexation noted that it was not a ldquoperfect dealrdquo but that he would vote yes calling the deal ldquoas good as wersquore going to getrdquo

ldquoI certainly would have enjoyed or expected to hear from Lennar directly on this thing but they chose not to do thatrdquo Willis said He added that he wanted to learn more about residentsrsquo expectations since he has heard more about this through these community meetings

Linder also voted in favor of the annexation

ldquoLet me speak to the familyrdquo Linder said ldquoI have five children I live in Parkside and Irsquom at the community center every dayrdquo He noted that he has advocated for a second community center however he does not think there will be a major increase in community center usage due to

the annexation He added that the Board had started with zero in the deal and was able to gain the capital contributions

McKenzie voted against the annexation

ldquoIs there enough in this proposal to provide value for Anthem and its families My answer is no therersquos notrdquo McKenzie said ldquoWe need to get a better deal or we need to say nordquo

Balzer provided the third vote in favor

ldquoIrsquom going to vote yes because I think the declarantrsquos rights being turned over to us is a big dealrdquo he said

Halleran who abstained from voting asked to put the vote off saying it was ldquopremature to make a decision tonightrdquo

ldquoI do believe that Irsquom in favor of the agreement in general I think with a little more time we could come to a better financial agreementrdquo Halleran said

Turner provided Pultersquos position as to putting off the vote

ldquoWersquove delayed this project several times already to accommodate this processrdquo Turner said ldquoMy report back is a non-vote is a no vote going forwardrdquo he added

Fyke did not vote saying he generally votes only when a vote is tied He did speak at the meeting noting the Boardrsquos limited resources and the impact of future annexation if this deal was not passed He noted that the capital contributions and additional funds from the new homes would add needed funds to the ACC

ldquoThis takes away a lot of our long term risk and gives us capital wersquore not going to get any other wayrdquo Fyke said

A Hero Gives Their Life to Something BiggerSHEA STANFIELDARTS COLUMNIST

Joseph Campbell the great American Mythologist wrote in his book The Herorsquos Journey ldquoA hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneselfrdquo This is the extraordinary truth of local artist Pat Stacy Mythology ancient mysteries and symbols have a way of emerging in the landscape of this realm choosing carefully those exceptionally sensitive individuals among us to carry their message The subjects of Patrsquos canvases lure their viewers in with the promise of deeper understandings in ancient shapes the sensuality of their textures and the warm glow of long forgotten earthly colors Through time Pat has developed the symbolic language used in her work A symbol for the Creatorrsquos light the spiral of manrsquos journey the spiritrsquos passage find their way into Patrsquos deeply soulful creations

Pat readily shares that she has always been drawn to art she did not know art would become her lifersquos passion A native of

Phoenix Pat attended West High before going on to Arizona State University obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in Education a Master of Science and finally a Master of Counseling before she set off on a highly

successful career as a Licensed Professional Counselor Pat retired in 1994 to care for her seriously ill husband who sadly passed away in 1995 Answering the call once again to return to her work in the service of others Pat became a disaster mental health volunteer with the Central Arizona Chapter of the American Red Cross and National Red Cross Her lifersquos philosophy has always been ldquoWe are all here to make a differencerdquo

In 2007 Pat received the sad news that her breast cancer from 2001 had returned She spent most of 2008 living with infections surgeries and recuperating At this point Patrsquos life took a fateful turn She picked up a paintbrush for the first time while attending art therapy and learned to paint with oils It wasnrsquot long before she also discovered the charms of painting with acrylics Surprisingly Pat found she could manage her pain using the creative process By 2009 Pat

had recovered her health and she set out on the journey to ldquofind a teacherrdquo Well as the old saying goes ldquowhen the student is ready the teacher appearsrdquo And so they did Pat sought out painters whose work she admired many were willing to teach lessons the rest became ldquoher sacred space where she found herself again and againrdquo

Patrsquos current body of work is done on four wooden panels constructed by her husband held together with wooden dowels She calls this style ldquoQuadriviumrdquo meaning a crossroads of four roads The works are heavily textured employing the building up of

layers in acrylics crackling techniques acrylic gloss with uniquely blended colors combining to enhance her ever present ancient and mystic symbols

As Pat believes ldquoThere are many realities we simply cannot see itrsquos about channeling the energy that comes through you Everything in my life has been preparing me for expressing creatively todayrdquo

Over just a few years Pat Stacy has attracted a strong and supportive following across the US Her work has been represented in galleries in Scottsdale Sedona and Tubac AZ as well as a gallery at ldquogateway to the Canyonlandsrdquo in Moab Utah Her full schedule of gallery representations shows and beautiful samples of her latest work can be seen on her Web site wwwpatstacycom

Arizona Archaeology Society meeting Oct 14CAVE CREEK ndash

Archaeologist Dr Kerry Thompson will speak at the Oct 14 Arizona Archaeology Society meeting to be held at the Good Shepherd of the Hills Episcopal Church 6502 East Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek

Thompson has worked primarily in the American Southwest A member of the Navajo Nation she is primarily interested in the inclusion of Native American perspectives and participation in archaeological practice She worked as an archaeologist for the Navajo Nation for many years assisting with the tribersquos cultural resource management needs and was trained as a lithic analyst In 2009 she earned a PhD from the University of Arizona where she researched late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century Navajo hogan sites in the context of NavajoAmerican contact

Folklore and oral tradition are listed as lines of evidence for establishing cultural affiliation under the Native American

Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) Since the passage of NAGPRA in 1990 archaeologists have increasingly engaged descendent communities and their oral histories in archaeological research While the body of literature is growing there is no clear picture of the ways in which oral histories are being brought into archaeological practice To attempt a better accommodation of Dineacute perspectives in this research Thompson used a theoretical framework derived from a ceremonial called the Hozhooji or Blessingway in concert with Western theories of agency practice structure and history in a study of late nineteenth and early twentieth century Dineacute sites

City of Phoenix receives $31 million federal grant to hire more police officers

PHOENIX ndash The city of Phoenix has been awarded a grant from the US Department of Justice for $31 million to hire 25 officers for the police department The COPS Hiring Program is a three year grant that will specifically focus on the police departmentrsquos efforts to strengthen the relationship between the community and officers

ldquoOur efforts to enhance and improve police community relations in Phoenix will take a big step forward with the addition of these 25 new officersrdquo said Mayor Greg Stanton ldquoNow Phoenix is in a position to hire nearly 300 new officers by the end of this fiscal year I am thankful that the Department of Justice chose Phoenix as one of three cities to receive the maximum awardrdquo

ldquoThere is no greater responsibility for local government than protecting its residentsrdquo said Phoenix Vice Mayor Daniel Valenzuela regarding the COPS grant ldquoAs my number one priority each year since taking office I have traveled to DC with colleagues and city staff to advocate on behalf of the people of Phoenix for our fair share of federal funding to strengthen public safety Our efforts continue to pay off ndash this latest $3125 million award is the second COPS grant awarded to the city of Phoenix in three yearsrdquo

The Phoenix City Council has made police officer hiring a top priority The police department is currently in a recruitment

process to hire more officers and this new grant funding accelerates that hiring to put more officers on duty sooner In addition the recent passage of Proposition 104 in August allows for an additional 125 to be hired this fiscal year The new COPS grant will bring the total for this current fiscal year to 295 new officers on the streets of Phoenix by July 1 2016

ldquoThis is great news for the city of Phoenix and brings us even closer to our goal of achieving the staffing levels we need in our police forcerdquo said Phoenix Councilmember Michael Nowakowski chairman of the Phoenix Public Safety and Veterans Subcommittee ldquoWith this grant residents across the city will see a greater presence of police officers to fight crime and keep our neighborhoods saferdquo

The Phoenix Police officers hired under the COPS grant will be assigned to the departmentrsquos Community Relations Bureau allowing the department to now expand that bureau with more resources Specific areas of focus include community response squads the bias crimes unit police advisory boards and programs focused on teaching

young people about careers in law enforcement

There are many things in nature that display the inadequacy of humans Still the daunting Mt Everest seems to be on a completely different level altogether Just thinking about the massive size of a mountain that sits five and half miles above sea level is amazing So why would anyone want to climb this mountain that consistently takes the lives of people that try to conquer it In director Baltasar Kormaacutekurrsquos actionadventure film ldquoEverestrdquo the answer is simply ldquobecause itrsquos thererdquo With impressive technical flair and a cast of fantastic actors ldquoEverestrdquo is in a great position to meet the expectations of finally making a superior film about the immense mountain Unfortunately a disconnection in the narrative with the characters makes the film lack some of the emotional substance associated with the real events that the story is based on

Rob Hall (Jason Clarke) is a guide for an adventure company that takes paying climbers to the summit of Everest In the spring of 1996 Hall brought a group of experienced climbers to Everest Along for the journey was a mailman named Doug Hansen (John Hawkes) who unsuccessfully attempted the ascent once before a well-to-do first timer from Texas named Beck Weathers (Josh Brolin) a woman named Yasuko Namba (Naoko Mori) who had climbed six of the seven highest summits in the world and another veteran climber named Scott Fischer (Jake Gyllenhaal) guiding

his own group Challenged by inclement weather conditions and overpopulation along the paths on the mountain the doomed expedition took the lives of eight people

ldquoEverestrdquo is visually striking Itrsquos breathtaking at times how good much of the computer

generated effects look The camera hovers glides and swoops all around the climbers throughout many of the treacherous scaling montages in the film The composition of many different scenes does a great job of displaying the vast scale of Everest by showing miniscule dots of people moving gradually up the side of the mountain Itrsquos a perspective that works to establish the risks of the challenge making the scenes feel far more dangerous than they otherwise might look Itrsquos all technically well achieved but special effects are just one of the elements that help make this film come to life Unfortunately there is something missing

The narrative builds this expedition up Everest the same way a sports movie would show how the team comes together to win the championship While all the climbers may not get

along the journey requires them to work together as a team to support one another in order to stay alive Initially the group dynamics work to display a camaraderie that reaches beyond the obvious gender and racial divides that many films like this fall into portraying instead ldquoEverestrdquo composes these ambitious people as a unique breed of thrill seekers who understand each other completely without actually having to explain the complicated reasons The line ldquobecause itrsquos thererdquo means something wholly unique to them something only they can understand Unfortunately this quality is only barely examined and once the trudge up the mountain begins it completely disappears amidst the wind and snow making the tragic events have far less of an emotional component as it should have This is unfortunate because the exceptionally talented cast could have easily made a better narrative displaying the complicated mindset of these kinds of athletes and the relationship they have to the challenge that could kill them resonate with more emotion

ldquoEverestrdquo is a beautiful film to watch one that portrays the intimidating and daunting nature of one of the worldrsquos most amazing natural wonders Unfortunately the complicated character elements that motivate humans to conquer this feat are missing making ldquoEverestrdquo a success in style but a disappointment in substance

NORTH VALLEY ndash Desert Foothills Land Trust is once again hosting the 2015 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest Share your favorite shots of Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain to help the Land Trust inspire the protection of the landscapes you love The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for the unique characteristics of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain ndash the landmarks at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities Photos can be taken any time but should feature Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain in some way
